Private Instrumental Tuition

FORE WORD BY THE DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Music is a flourishing and fundamental part of life at Wimbledon High School. Our 25-strong team of Peripatetic Music Teachers are a central part of our music-making, offering the highest of professional qualifications alongside varied and extensive experience to teach lessons which are stimulating, engaging and enjoyable. The Senior School Music Department offers an incredibly busy timetable with performance opportunities available to all our girls. These include large formal end of term concerts within school and in Central London venues, Scholars’ Recitals, ABRSM recitals, Instrumental Competitions, an annual Lieder Competition and a variety of events aimed at more contemporary musicians including the Battle of the Bands, House Music and the ‘Anything but Classical’ (AbC) Concert. Our weekly Friday Jammin’ series offers girls the chance to organise their own 15-minute short concerts, performing various types of music to small, informal groups within the Senior Hall. A Cappella, our auditioned Senior Chamber Choir, toured New York in February 2015, which included workshops with Broadway musicians. In 2016, WHS hosted the GDST Young Musician of the Year Competition, with the finalists performing in St. John’s Smith Square, London. In 2017 the choir is touring in Barcelona. The Junior School Music Department is equally as busy, with regular formal and informal concerts, services, external trips and a full co-curricular programme. In March 2015, the Year 5 and 6 Choir were finalists in the GDST Young Choir of the Year, performing in the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. This choir also toured Belgium in 2015, performing at the Menin Gate for the Last Post Ceremony. The Peripatetic Music Teachers often teach in both the Junior and Senior Schools, allowing for excellent musical relationships to be developed between pupil and teacher across both age groups. Tuition is offered in every major instrument and lessons in instruments not currently covered can easily be arranged as demand dictates. Many of our girls choose to study for the ABRSM or Trinity Examination qualifications, with around 60 girls taking the exams every term. Examiners regularly comment on the high standards they hear from our girls and their marks are equally impressive, with some 70% of girls achieving merit or distinction grades throughout the academic year 2016-17. Up to Year 10, private music lessons are rotated around the academic timetable with girls thus not falling behind in their academic studies. From Year 11 upwards, private music lessons do not take place in academic lesson time and as such are scheduled around lessons to avoid the girls from missing any lesson content as their examinations approach. The Peripatetic Music Teachers are excellent in clear communication with girls and parents alike, going out of their way to ensure the girls are fully supported in their entire education. Fixed lessons cannot be offered for girls unless they are in Year 11-13. Whatever your daughter’s musical taste or ability, there are ample opportunities for their musicality to develop and flourish at Wimbledon High School.
