Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

HYMN 496 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — O Christ the Lord, O Christ the King O Christ the Lord, O Christ the King, who wide the gates of death didst fling, whose place upon creation’s throne by Easter triumph was made known, rule now on earth from realms above, subdue the nations by thy love. Lord, vindicate against men’s greed the weak, whose tears thy justice plead; thy pity, Lord, on men who lie broken by war and tyranny; show them the cross which thou didst bear, give them the power that conquered there. Let those whose pride usurps thy throne acknowledge thou art Lord alone; cause those whose lust torments mankind thy wrath to know, thy mercy find; make all the rebel world proclaim the mighty power of thy blest name.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Wisdom of Solomon. Wisdom is radiant and unfading, and she is easily discerned by those who love her, and is found by those who seek her. She hastens to make herself known to those who desire her. One who rises early to seek her will have no difficulty, for she will be found sitting at the gate. To fix one’s thought on her is perfect understanding, and one who is vigilant on her account will soon be free from care, because she goes about seeking those worthy of her, and she graciously appears to them in their paths, and meets them in every thought. Wisdom of Solomon 6:12-16

Reader Allll

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Be pleased, O God, to deliver me; O Lord, make haste to help me. Let those who seek my life be ashamed and altogether dismayed; let those who take pleasure in my misfortune draw back and be disgraced. Antiphon Let those who say to me “Aha!” and gloat over me turn back, because they are ashamed. Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; let those who love your salvation say for ever, “Great is the Lord!” Antiphon But as for me, I am poor and needy; come to me speedily, O God. You are my helper and my deliverer; O Lord, do not tarry. Antiphon Psalm 70

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians. We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died. For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel's call and with the sound of God's trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, "Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout, 'Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' But the wise replied, 'No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.' And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us.' But he replied, 'Truly I tell you, I do not know you.' Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour." PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Celebrant

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. O may we all one Bread, one Body be, through this blest Sacrament of unity. For all thy Church, O Lord, we intercede; make thou our sad divisions soon to cease; draw us the nearer each to each, we plead, by drawing all to thee, O Prince of Peace; thus may we all one Bread, one Body be, through this blest Sacrament of unity. We pray thee too for wanderers from thy fold; O bring them back, good Shepherd of the sheep, back to the faith which saints believed of old, back to the Church which still that faith doth keep; soon may we all one Bread, one Body be, through this blest Sacrament of unity. So, Lord, at length when sacraments shall cease, may we be one with all thy Church above, one with thy saints in one unbroken peace, one with thy saints in one unbounded love; more blessèd still, in peace and love to be one with the Trinity in Unity.

26 | THE LITURGY

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY This weekend we observe Remembrance Day and take a time of silence to pray for those who sacrificed their lives in battles for the freedom that we have today. We give thanks to those who have given their lives for us. We give thanks to Christ our redeemer who gave up his life on the cross, and seek ways to follow him as his disciples. It is unlikely that where we are we will be asked to sacrifice our lives in battle, but we are called to sacrifice in other ways. In the way we spend our time, our money and our lives as an offering of sacrifice, thanksgiving and praise to God.

As you know, St. James’ has a reputation for being a BIG presence in our local community and we seek to continue to be a bright beacon here on the DTES. To do that we need you, people who know us and people we do not yet know! For example, one of our upcoming initiatives is to have the main church open to the public more often during the day. We trialled this on October 2nd with great success. When the doors are open people come in seeking a quiet space, a moment of prayer, and the

sacraments, God is drawing people to us and to God’s self. To keep the church open we need volunteers to be present in the space. Can you give a few hours of your time? You will be given support and training and will work alongside others in this ministry of presence.

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

This is just one example of a way you can serve here. Can you use an iron? Can you sew, or make a pot of coffee? Do you listen well, can you pray with people? And who do you know who is looking for volunteer work or better yet, seeking Jesus!? What we do here at St. James’ is made possible by a wide cross section of people, not just Christian people, or the folks you see at Mass. Consider the bargain sale that happens twice a year. Many of the volunteers who come to set up and serve at these events do not attend church, and yet here they are. Go on, sign up, spread the word and be part of the light here at St. James’.

FUNERAL PLANNING November, the month of remembering, All Saints’, All Souls’ and Armistice Day, is a timely reminder to us all of our own mortality, and of our responsibility to prepare ourselves spiritually and by ordering our affairs. For the sake of family & friends, it is important that we have a Will, and that we leave instructions regarding our preferred funeral arrangements. The Office has a form available for this purpose, and the Legacy booklet from the Diocese has a very helpful Checklist of things to bear in mind when preparing to make a Will. Copies are available today. TREASURER’S REPORT Our financial situation sits within the scope of the 2017 budget. To date, some expenditures have been slightly greater than planned, and rental income and regular giving have been lower than expected. It had been anticipated that by year-end the balance would come close to our target, however, agreements for substantial film industry productions in the final months of the year have been made and these will likely bring us to a surplus position. Generous bequests this year from our much missed Alice Rolfe, and Dr. John Conway, have added to our endowment. An earlier donation of Dr. Conway’s, of late last year, is now formally the John Conway Outreach Fund, the mission of which is the aid of refugees, both international and local. Preliminary work on the Rectory renovation has been underway for some time now and expenses on that front are just as expected from the budgeting process. We are thankful for our able investment managers at Odlum Brown, our accountant and dedicated office team, and our Rector, Wardens, and Trustees. Their work together in nurturing and administering God's gifts in the form of our endowment, your contributions to the parish of St. James', and those of the many who have gone before us, allow us to sustain the life and mission of St. James'. HOT SOCKS Fathers Cooper and Edwardes from St. James’ started ministering to seamen both spiritually and socially in the 1890s. We welcome assistance with the packing, so meet at the church around 9 am. It is a short walk and a car may be available. Any questions? Ask Mary Brown.
