Sixth Sunday after Epiphany | February 16, 2020 | 10:30 am
Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy.
VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst; To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 8:00 am Morning Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel 8:30 am Low Mass, Lady Chapel 9:15 am Coffee Hour, Parish Centre 10:30 am Solemn Mass, Church 12:00 pm Coffee Hour, Parish Centre 5:00 pm Evening Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel ______________________________________________________________________ This booklet is printed on recycled paper. Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex).
As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection BEFORE SERVICE IN CHURCH LET me come into the church of God to meet the Spirit of God: not to give religion an hour, but to live in the eternal; not to maintain a decorous habit, but to bow in the holy place before the Holy One; not to judge the words of a preacher, but to draw life from the Word and Truth everlasting; not to be moved or soothed by music, but to sing from the heart divine praises; not that mine eyes roam over architecture or congregation, but that my soul look up to the King in his beauty, and my heart plead the needs of his children; not that my thoughts escape out into the world, but that they be still, and know that thou art GOD. Let me go, and go again, into the house of the Lord, and be glad, and give thanks, and adore my King and my GOD. Eric Milner-White

Almighty and everliving God, whose Son Jesus Christ healed the sick and restored them to wholeness of life, look with compassion on the anguish of the world, and by thy power make whole all peoples and nations; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.
The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader
Be seated A reading from the Book of Sirach. If you choose, you can keep the commandments, and to act faithfully is a matter of your own choice. He has placed before you fire and water; stretch out your hand for whichever you choose. Before each person are life and death, and whichever one chooses will be given. For great is the wisdom of the Lord; he is mighty in power and sees everything; his eyes are on those who fear him, and he knows every human action. He has not commanded anyone to be wicked, and he has not given anyone permission to sin. Sirach 15:15-20

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.
Happy are they whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord! Happy are they who observe his decrees and seek him with all their hearts! Antiphon
Who never do any wrong, but always walk in his ways. You laid down your commandments, that we should fully keep them. Antiphon Oh, that my ways were made so direct that I might keep your statutes! Then I should not be put to shame, when I regard all your commandments. Antiphon I will thank you with an unfeigned heart, when I have learned your righteous judgements. I will keep your statutes; do not utterly forsake me. Antiphon Psalm 119:1-8
SECOND READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. And so, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, for you are still of the flesh. For as long as there is jealousy and quarrelling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations? For when one says, "I belong to Paul," and another, "I belong to Apollos," are you not merely human? What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labour of each. For we are God's servants, working together; you are God's field, God's building. 1 Corinthians 3:1-9

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not murder'; and 'whoever murders shall be liable to judgement.' But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgement; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, 'You fool,' you will be liable to the hell of fire. So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell. It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.' But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let your word be 'Yes, Yes' or 'No, No'; anything more than this comes from the evil one." Matthew 5:21-37

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. The Thurible CLERGY NOTES In the first chapter of John’s Gospel, two of the disciples of John the Baptist express an interest in learning more from Jesus. They address him as “teacher” and it is clear that they want to spend time listening to what he has to say. They ask him where he is living. His reply is interesting. He does not give them the address or help them with directions. He issues an invitation “Come and see.” At St. James’, we issue the same invitation when we open the doors of our church on Monday and Wednesday mornings. A group of dedicated volunteers is there to welcome visitors into our sacred space. A hot beverage and a place to warm-up is offered, along with friendly conversation and information. Equally important, however, is our directing attention beyond the wood and stone to the ways in which we are taken into the Kingdom of Heaven.

PALMS It is an ancient tradition that the ashes used on Ash Wednesday come from the burning of palms carried on the previous year’s Palm Sunday. It is a powerful symbol of our belief that without God’s help, even our successes turn to dust and ashes. Please bring your palms to Mass next Sunday (February 23). THE HUMAN CORONAVIRUS Our Archbishop has written a pastoral letter about the ways in which we can address our fears around this issue and also remain faithful in our Eucharistic life as a community. She suggest a number of practices with regard to the liturgy that will help to minimize the chances of spreading infection. These include the use of hand sanitizers, care with administering the chalice, not allowing the practice of intincting, and respecting the variety of ways of sharing the Peace. All of these, we are happy to say, have been standard procedures of St. James’ for some time. To err on the side of caution, we have decided, in addition, to discontinue the use of holy water stoups located at various entrances to the church. Archbishop Melissa urges us to keep the situation in our prayers and to avoid over-reaction, not giving way to prejudice and fear.
OUR PARISH GUEST PREACHER It is a great delight to welcome the Very Rev’d Peter Elliott as our preacher today. Fr. Peter is known to many of us from his time as Rector of Christ Church Cathedral and Dean of this Diocese. Fr. Peter’s zeal, creativity, and passionate dedication to the Christian Gospel has helped to make our cathedral the wonderful place it is today.
