A Reflection A STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “The Lord God then took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden to cultivate and care for it.” - Genesis 2:15 Lord, help me to do all that you ask, in the way that you ask, for as long as you ask, simply because you have asked it of me. “For as in one body we have many parts, and all the parts do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another. Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us exercise them…” - Romans 12:4-6 Lord, help me to do all that you ask, in the way that you ask, for as long as you ask, simply because you have asked it of me. “This is what the Lord then said to Moses: ‘Tell the Israelites to take up a collection for me. From every man you shall accept the contribution that his heart prompts him to give to me.’” – Exodus 25:1-2 Lord, help me to do all that you ask, in the way that you ask, for as long as you ask, simply because you have asked it of me. “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” - Luke 12:48 Lord, help me to do all that you ask, in the way that you ask, for as long as you ask, simply because you have asked it of me. “Give and gifts will be given to you: a good measure, packed together, shaken down and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.” - Luke 6:38 Lord, help me to do all that you ask, in the way that you ask, for as long as you ask, simply because you have asked it of me. Amen.

Entrance Rite At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand. HYMN 318 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Rejoice Today with One Accord

Rejoice today with one accord, sing out with exultation; rejoice and praise our mighty Lord, whose arm hath brought salvation. His works of love proclaim the greatness of his name; for he is God alone, who hath his mercy shown: let all his saints adore him! When in distress to him we cried he heard our sad complaining; O trust in him, whate'er betide, his love is all-sustaining. Triumphant songs of praise to him our hearts shall raise: now every voice shall say, "O praise our God alway"; let all his saints adore him!

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Zephaniah. Be silent before the Lord God! For the day of the Lord is at hand; the Lord has prepared a sacrifice, he has consecrated his guests. At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the people who rest complacently on their dregs, those who say in their hearts, ‘The Lord will not do good, nor will he do harm.’ Their wealth shall be plundered, and their houses laid waste. Though they build houses, they shall not inhabit them; though they plant vineyards, they shall not drink wine from them. The great day of the Lord is near, near and hastening fast; the sound of the day of the Lord is bitter, the warrior cries aloud there. That day will be a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, a day of trumpet blast and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the lofty battlements. I will bring such distress upon people that they shall walk like the blind; because they have sinned against the Lord, their blood shall be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung. Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lord’s wrath; in the fire of his passion the whole earth shall be consumed; for a full, a terrible end he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth. Zephaniah 1:7, 12-18

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Lord, you have been our refuge from one generation to another. Before the mountains were brought forth, or the land and the earth were born, from age to age you are God. You turn us back to the dust and say, “Go back, O child of earth.” Antiphon HIGH MASS | 9

For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past and like a watch in the night. You sweep us away like a dream; we fade away suddenly like the grass. In the morning it is green and flourishes; in the evening it is dried up and withered. Antiphon For we consume away in your displeasure; we are afraid because of your wrathful indignation. Our iniquities you have set before you, and our secret sins in the light of your countenance. So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. Antiphon Psalm 90:1-8, 12

EPISTLE READING Reader

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians. Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they say, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labour pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, "For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, 'Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.' And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, 'Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.' Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master replied, 'You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. HIGH MASS | 11

For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'" Matthew 25:14-30

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY This week I received my Intention card and letter from Fr. Kevin regarding giving over the coming year. I also went to the diocesan council meeting last night and spent a lot of time working with all those on council on various motions, many of which had to do with financial stewardship in various places across the diocese. This bigger picture-view led me to consider giving in its broader context and helped me to understand why we have a month dedicated to thinking about stewardship of our time, talents and treasure. What we give here at St. James’ affects not only our ministry, but also that of others in our diocese, our brothers and sisters in faith. This past month, we have talked about financial giving, volunteering, legacy planning, and the fact that tithing (giving 10%) was a practice of our ancestors that for some is not a realistic amount, given the cost of living here in

Vancouver. However, for some of us it is, and there are some who are able to give more. All our contributions are valuable, and are given as each of us are able.

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

Listening to the legal and financial conversations at the Diocesan Council, I began to think in terms of percentages. Perhaps you or I can’t manage 10% or more, but perhaps we can manage to give 1 or 2% more than we did last year. I found this to be a way to think about an increase that is easier to get my head round, and perhaps more manageable. Ultimately we give in response to God’s generosity to us, and God is very generous to us, and to our wider church. I hope this is of help to you while you discern what you are able to give for the God’s mission through our church. I am looking forward to celebrating with you on the 26th when we return our pledge cards and get to feast on pies! See you soon. Mother Lucy

FUNERAL PLANNING November, the month of remembering, All Saints’, All Souls’ and Armistice Day, is a timely reminder to us all of our own mortality, and of our responsibility to prepare ourselves spiritually and by ordering our affairs. For the sake of family & friends, it is important that we have a Will, and that we leave instructions regarding our preferred funeral arrangements. The Office has a form available for this purpose, and the Legacy booklet from the Diocese has a very helpful Checklist of things to bear in mind when preparing to make a Will. Copies are available today. CHOIR The High Mass Choir is very much looking forward to presenting glorious music at the Midnight Mass of Christmas Eve. This year we will be singing the Messe de Minuit pour Noël by the French baroque composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier, accompanied by an ensemble of top-notch musicians. You are invited to help underwrite the honoraria for our musicians, either anonymously or as a dedication. Speak to our Organist & Choirmaster Gerald Harder for more information. WHITE RIBBON AND MOOSE HIDE CAMPAIGN For the last few years the Global Mothers’ Union has promoted the White Ribbon Campaign, also known as the 16 Days of Activism, to fight genderbased violence against women and girls. This year the society is focusing on “stigma” where someone is ostracized, abused, rejected or treated negatively because of some characteristic they have, or something which has been done to them, such as rape or sexual exploitation in human

trafficking. Sadly, this reaction is directed towards the victim rather than the perpetrator. From November 26 to December 10 our members are inviting parishioners to wear a white ribbon to show support for this campaign, to break the silence, lift the shame and shift the blame. Or, if you are a man you may prefer to wear a moose hide square. What is this Moose Hide symbol?

One August morning in 2011 Paul Lacerte and his daughter, Raven, were hunting moose near the infamous Highway of Tears. They had brought down a moose that would help feed their family for the winter. As they worked they couldn’t help realizing how close they were to the highway that had brought so much sorrow to their communities. Paul recognized that his daughter deserved a life free of violence. What if they used the moose hide to become involved in the movement to end violence towards aboriginal women and children? Together with family and friends they cut up the moose hide and started the Moose Hide Campaign. The ribbons and squares will be available in the Narthex on Sun. Nov. 26. MVA DELEGATES ASSEMBLY Nov. 29 at 6:30 pm Britannia Secondary School - Cafeteria,1661 Napier St Meeting to review the year, do Alliance business and ensure we are ready to keep up the momentum into 2018.
