Aboriginal Day of Prayer | June 21, 2015 | 10:30 am

Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection The work of the TRC has shown just how difficult the process of truth determination has been. Thousands of Survivors came forward and, in tears and with anger, shared their pain. They showed how humour, perseverance, and resilience got them through the hard-est of times, and how life after the schools sometimes just got too hard. They came forward to share their stories, not just to ease their burden, but also to try to make things better for their children and their grandchildren. Reconciliation is going to take hard work. People of all walks of life and at all levels of society will need to be willingly engaged. Reconciliation calls for personal action. People need to get to know each other. They need to learn how to speak to, and about, each other respectfully. They need to learn how to speak knowledgeably about the history of this country. And they need to ensure that their children learn how to do so as well. Reconciliation calls for group action. The 2012 Vancouver Olympics Organizing Committee recognized, paid tribute to, and honoured the Four Host First Nations at all public events it organized. Clubs, sports teams, artists, musicians, writers, teach-ers, doctors, lawyers, judges, and politicians need to learn from that example of how to be more inclusive and more respectful, and how to engage more fully in the dialogue about reconciliation. Reconciliation calls for community action. The City of Vancouver, British Columbia, proclaimed itself the City of Reconciliation. The City of Halifax, Nova Scotia, holds an annual parade and procession commemorating the 1761 Treaty of Peace and Friendship. Speeches are delivered and everyone who attends is feasted. The City of Wetaskiwin, Alberta, erected a sign at its outskirts with the city’s name written in Cree syllabics. Other communities can do similar things. Reconciliation calls for federal, provincial, and territorial government action. Reconciliation calls for national action. The way we govern ourselves must change. Laws must change. Policies and programs must change. The way we educate our children and ourselves must change. The way we do business must change. Thinking must change. The way we talk to, and about, each other must change. All Canadians must make a firm and lasting commitment to reconciliation to ensure that Canada is a country where our children and grandchildren can thrive. COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant All

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

Celebrant

Let us pray. Creator God, from thee every family in heaven and earth takes its name. Thou hast rooted and grounded us in thy covenant love, and empowered us by thy Spirit to speak the truth in love, and to walk in thy way toward justice and wholeness. Mercifully grant that thy people, journeying together in partnership, may be strengthened and guided to help one another to grow into the full stature of Christ, who is our light and our life. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of the prophet Isaiah. To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, ‘My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God’? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:25-31

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

One day tells its tale to another, and one night imparts knowledge to another. Although they have no words or language, and their voices are not heard, Their sound has gone out into all lands, and their message to the ends of the world. Antiphon In the deep has he set a pavilion for the sun; it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber; it rejoices like a champion to run its course. It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens and runs about to the end of it again; nothing is hidden from its burning heat. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. Antiphon Psalm 19:2-6, 14

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things HIGH MASS | 9

that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:4-9

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon Allll Deacon Allll

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (John testified to him and cried out, ‘This was he of whom I said, “He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.” ’) From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known. John 1:1-18

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved; how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed! The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures; he will my shield and portion be as long as life endures. Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; 'tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY This National Aboriginal Day brings to a close the Anglican Church of Canada's #22 Days Campaign which has marked the publication of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Final Report, an extract from the closing words of which is printed for our Reflection this morning. During these #22 Days we have been encouraged to reflect again on the stories of aboriginal sisters and brothers in our own and earlier generations, the experience of individuals and peoples, to acknowledge and repent of past hurts, and to recommit to healing and reconciliation, to going forward together as the people of Canada. As witness to this church bells have been rung across the country: here at St. James' the bell has been tolled 22 times at least once on each of these 22 days by members of different community groups in the DTES, in itself a great witness to common concern amidst our local diversity. Let us hope and pray that these #22 Days mark not only the end of the Commission's formal work, for which we give thanks, but also the beginning of a new understanding of our journeying together. What has this Report to say to us here at St James'? How

does life here in our church community and here in Vancouver stand in the light of St. Paul's statement in the Letter to the Colossians, “ ... there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all!”?

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

****** At High Mass today we shall be honoured by the presence of Kwhlii Gibaygum Nisga’a Dancers and Singers as on this National Aboriginal Day we dedicate the Nisga’a Mask. We shall also say farewell to Fr. Fenton in his capacity as Priest-inCharge, although he will remain our Archdeacon and a great friend of St James'. I take this opportunity to thank him for all that he has done in and for St. James' in these past few months, of which I know only a little - and that little is a great deal! We look forward to his Archidiaconal Visitations from time to time in the months ahead.

OUR PARISH FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS You may have noticed that there have been some changes to the Lady Garden in the past week. It is being redeveloped as a permanent memorial garden, and it will be the place of internment for the cremated remains of those who are currently buried at St. David’s and St. Luke’s. When St. David’s closed, one of the things that had to be cared for was the memorial garden. The relatives of those interned there expressed a desire to transfer their remains to another Anglican church. As St. James’ has had a long relationship with St. David’s, it seemed reasonable to move them here.

The memorial garden at St. Luke’s Court is to be relocated to the Lady Garden as well, where it will be much more accessible and visible in a location within the boundaries of the church. It will also be better maintained than at present. The garden will be dedicated and blessed when it is complete. After the remains have been relocated, the plants that were removed will be replaced and new plants (and hopefully a Dogwood that is not susceptible to disease) will be put in. The plaque that is currently at St. Luke’s listing the names of those whose ashes are interned will be relocated beside the columbarium in the church. We also hope to install new lighting and an irrigation system. To that end, donations for the restoration and lighting of the memorial garden would be very helpful. The electrical service to the rectory is being installed Monday, June 22. Initially, the electrician thought he would run the cable along the outside of the parish hall, but it will be cheaper and faster to run it in a direct line through the crypt, so that is what is being done. The work involves cutting a shallow channel through the concrete floor of the crypt, and we are told it will take only a few days. Obviously, the crypt will be closed to all activities next week.

There has been a delay in the installation of the LED lighting in the nave. We found that we have received a partial shipment of bulbs, so we will wait until everything we need is here. The painters will begin their work shortly, starting at the top of the church. All of the painting, church, hall and rectory, is expected to be complete by the end of August. As always, the Wardens are available to answer any questions. Reece Wrightman, People’s Warden BILLETS NEEDED Accommodation is needed for members of the choir of Selwyn College, Cambridge University, who will be presenting a concert here at St. James’ on the evening of Tuesday, July 21, and singing Compline on the evening of Wednesday, July 22. Hosts provide transportation to their home on each of those evenings, accommodation for the night, breakfast the next morning, and transportation back to St. James’. If necessary, car pool transportation back to the church could be arranged for the mornings of July 22 or 23. This is a chance to provide hospitality and meet some very talented young musicians! Please contact Gerald Harder by email at musicdirector@stjames.bc.ca or call the church office. THANK YOU Thank you everyone for all your kind words, good wishes, cards and mementos of my time with you at St. James’. This is not a goodbye but an au revoir. I will be down from time-to-time to visit. St. James’ is in my heart. May you have a wonderful summer, and I will see you in September. #22DAYS For the last time today, National Aboriginal Day (June 21), we will toll the bell 22 times. This will be done in remembrance of the missing and murdered Aboriginal women. KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. Look at St. Mark’s Gospel 4.35-41. We hear of the time Jesus and his disciples were caught in a storm that frightened the disciples. They thought they were going to die. They called on Jesus, who was taking a nap, and Jesus got up and yelled at the storm and the storm stopped. This was one of the moments that the disciples began to realize that Jesus was not just an ordinary man. Jesus has control over the wind and rain and yet he is also concerned with each of us. He longs to bring us peace when we experience our own life storms. Parents: Have fun with this story. Role play the scene together and then ask your child(ren) what the disciples must have felt both when they were in the midst of the storm and then after Jesus calmed it. Ask your child(ren) when he/she has felt afraid and ask how it was resolved. Share together times when you felt Jesus calming the storms in your life.

RELATIONSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS SERVICE OF ORDINATION JUNE 28 4:00 pm, St. Mary’s Kerrisdale Please keep the following people in your prayers as they prepare to be ordained deacons on June 28: Helen Lingham (St. Andrew, Langley), Paul Richards (Holy Trinity, White Rock), Clare Morgan (Christ Church Cathedral), and Alex Wilson (St. Paul).

COMMEMORATION St. Alban First Martyr of Britain, c.304 June 22

Alban was a soldier in one of the Roman legions which guarded the province of Britannia early in the third century. This legion’s camp was at Veru-la′-mium, to the north of London. Though a pagan, Alban gave shelter to a Christian priest who was fleeing persecution. When he observed the priest doing his prayers, he was moved to question him about the Church’s faith. The priest’s replies led Alban to accept Christ as his only Lord and Saviour. In the meantime, reports that the priest was hiding with Alban reached the authorities. Soldiers were sent to seize the priest. When the detail reached his dwelling, Alban met them at the doorway. He was wearing his guest’s cloak, the customary garb of a Christian priest, and presented himself to the soldiers as the man they were looking for. Taken before the military governor, who discovered the ruse, Alban refused to offer the pagan sacrifices required by law. He was condemned to death and beheaded that same day. Alban’s martyrdom is considered to have been his baptism. For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994

COMMEMORATION The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist June 24 The birth of Saint John the Baptist is told in the Gospel according to Luke, where it serves as a bridge between the Old Testament and the time of Christ. The initial focus of Luke’s account is Zechariah the priest and his wife Elizabeth; and the evangelist draws on phrases and motifs from the Old Testament in order to associate them with Abraham and Sarah. Like those ancient figures, the parents of John the Baptist were righteous but childless. Moreover, Elizabeth herself (like Sarah) was well past menopause, so that according to nature she was no longer able to conceive a child. But just as God intervened to make Abraham and Sarah have a child and become the forebears of the chosen people, so an angel announced to righteous Zechariah that he and his wife were to have a son who would be the forerunner of the Chosen One, the Christ. So it came to pass that Elizabeth conceived and gave birth to a son, whom she named John. Then his father Zechariah prophesied, saying, You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. Zechariah also saw that his son’s mission would prepare the way for the fulfilment of God’s oath, the oath which he swore to our father Abraham, to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. Thus, according to Luke, the birth of John the Baptist gathered up and embodied the whole truth of the Old Testament and made it ready for its own perfection in Christ Jesus, the One whose way John was born to prepare.
