A Reflection A PRAYER FOR ALL PEOPLES Creator God, our country has journeyed for six years in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission process, seeking understanding, healing, and reconciliation. It has not always been an easy path, but we have sought to walk it together. We have tried to listen to each other’s stories. We have sought to understand without judgement. We have noted the differences in values and traditions, but also the places where we share values and traditions. We are all your children. You embrace all in your love. You call us now to reflect that love to each other. You call us to be brothers and sisters on the path to reconciliation. Amen. A reading from the Book of Jonah.
Reader Allll
When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. But this was very displeasing to Jonah, and he became angry. He prayed to the Lord and said, ‘O Lord! Is not this what I said while I was still in my own country? That is why I fled to Tarshish at the beginning; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and ready to relent from punishing. And now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.’ And the Lord said, ‘Is it right for you to be angry?’ Then Jonah went out of the city and sat down east of the city, and made a booth for himself there. He sat under it in the shade, waiting to see what would become of the city. The Lord God appointed a bush, and made it come up over Jonah, to give shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort; so Jonah was very happy about the bush. But when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm that attacked the bush, so that it withered. When the sun rose, God prepared a sultry east wind, and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint and asked that he might die. He said, ‘It is better for me to die than to live.’ But God said to Jonah, ‘Is it right for you to be angry about the bush?’ And he said, ‘Yes, angry enough to die.’ Then the Lord said, ‘You are concerned about the bush, for which you did not labour and which you did not grow; it came into being in a night and perished in a night. And should I not be concerned about Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many animals?’ Jonah 3:10 - 4:11 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.
I will exalt you, O God my King, and bless your Name for ever and ever. Every day will I bless you and praise your Name for ever and ever. Antiphon
Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; there is no end to his greatness. One generation shall praise your works to another and shall declare your power. Antiphon I will ponder the glorious splendour of your majesty and all your marvelous works. They shall speak of the might of your wondrous acts, and I will tell of your greatness. Antiphon They shall publish the remembrance of your great goodness; they shall sing of your righteous deeds. The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and of great kindness. Antiphon Psalm 145:1-8
EPISTLE READING Reader
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians. For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labour for me; and I do not know which I prefer. I am hard pressed between the two: my desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better; but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. Since I am convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in faith, so that I may share abundantly in your boasting in Christ Jesus when I come to you again. Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that you are standing firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of the gospel and are in no way intimidated by your opponents. For them this is evidence of their destruction, but of your salvation. And this is God’s doing. For he has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ, but of suffering for him as well—since you are having the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I still have. Philippians 1:21-27

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. ‘For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the labourers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the market-place; and he said to them, “You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.” So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o’clock, he did the same. And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, “Why are you standing here idle all day?” They said to him, “Because no one has hired us.” He said to them, “You also go into the vineyard.” When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, “Call the labourers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.” When those hired about five o’clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, “These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.” But he replied to one of them, “Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?” So the last will be first, and the first will be last.’ Matthew 20:1-16 HIGH MASS | 11

It is right in all times and in all places to thank and praise you Creator of all. We praise you here where the Fraser River meets the Salish Sea, where city and farm, wilderness and industry are side by side. We praise you at a time when the body of earth is broken again and again. We give thanks for our place in the story of salvation. Our ancestors journeyed with you in creation and migration. They depended on the land, were displaced from the land and displaced others from their lands. They knew you in tents and cities, on mountains and by wells, in families and in dreams, and through wilderness prophets who spoke of cedars and listened to ravens. Together with angels and ancestors, orca and salmon, bear and raven, salal and cedar we join our voices with all creation in this ancient honour song:

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Celebrant
Kneel
We give thanks to you for Jesus, whose first bed was a feed trough. He was baptized in the Jordan, tested in the wilderness; he traveled in fishing boats and told parables of farmers and seeds, labor and wages, yeast and bread. On the night before he died, Jesus took bread, food of the poor, the work of field and hearth, he gave thanks, broke it and gave it to his friends saying: Take and eat, this is my body, given for you, do this to remember me.+ Again after supper he took the cup of wine, fruit of the land, gave thanks and gave it to his friends saying: This is my blood, which is shed for you. When you do this, do it in memory of me.+ Remembering Jesus’ life, death and resurrection and awaiting his coming kingdom, we offer you this bread and this cup. Creator, send your Spirit on these gifts so that we may know Jesus in them and be gathered together with everyone who shares this sacred meal of justice and community. Fill us with the courage and love of Jesus, that we may strive for justice and peace, respect the dignity of every human being, and safeguard the integrity of creation. Bring us with all your saints to your commonwealth of sparrow and lily, child and beggar which is both now and yet to come in Jesus Christ our Brother. By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, Loving Creator, world without end. Amen.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Last Saturday I went to the Diocesan Council retreat day at the Synod Office, where the day began with “The Blanket Exercise.” You may have heard of it. Participants begin by standing on one of several blankets which are on the floor, all next to each other without any gaps. The blankets represent “Turtle Island” – Canada before it was called Canada, before settlers arrived.
that the indigenous peoples have been shown from when the first settlers landed to the present day. When the exercise was finished, there was only silence.
As the exercise proceeded, we (the participants) were taken through the history of the settlement and conquest of the European settlers who gradually, took the land from the indigenous peoples whom they encountered. I learned that whole societies, cultures and languages were wiped out either by violence or by diseases that the settlers brought with them.
The Blanket Exercise and the reflections from the participants that came afterwards made me realize how much work towards reconciliation has still to be done, and how much there is still to be learned. Looking forward to the Reconciliation Feast being held at St. James’ today, I want to extend thanks to all those people who have been instrumental in bringing the feast to fruition, and say how very grateful I am to the elders from both the indigenous and settler peoples who will attend, for their courage and willingness to come together.
We walked through the residential school period and heard quotes from people effected by the schools at the time and in the aftermath. Words from children who lost their connection with their communities. The cries of mothers whose children were taken and the lack of compassion and respect
Tomorrow, Bishop Mark MacDonald will preach at the Low Mass and then the St. James’ Social Justice Group along with other members of our community and friends will walk to the start of the Reconciliation March which ends in Strathcona Park where we will hear and learn more that will

STREET OUTREACH NEWS The Administrative Assistant to the Street Outreach is one of the unseen, unsung heroes who make outreach happen. Heather Graber—Fr Matthew and the Street Outreach said goodbye to Operations Coordinator, Ms Heather Graber at the end of August. Heather is currently travelling, awaiting a fiancée visa so she can proceed to England were she will marry Daniel—Deo volente—in November. Heather is a gifted and committed leader, whose organizational skills and personal qualities advanced the work of the Street Outreach, and will be highly prized wherever she serves next. Heather even organized Fr Matthew himself (—an extraordinary feat), freeing him to spend more time in frontline work. We are grateful to Louisa Farrell for hosting a gathering in Heather’s honour. Anna Wood—After a careful search, Street Outreach Initiative welcomes Mrs Anna Wood, to the position of Administrative Assistant. Anna is part of the Servants Vancouver team, and is also the administrator of their office operations in Canada. Anna lives here in St James Parish and knows the DTES community well, having served in outreach and community building here for a number of years. Anna brings considerable administrative skills and a demonstrated commitment to community outreach to the work of the Street Outreach, and we are blessed to have found her.
