Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. A Reflection A reading from the Letter to Diognetus: This short anonymous treatise was probably written in Egypt around 200, and was dedicated to a cultured pagan called Diognetus, otherwise unknown. The text gives a remarkable insight into Christian life in a hostile pagan society. With goodness and kindness, like a king who sends his son, who is also King, God sent God, the Word, among us. He sent him to save us through persuasion rather than violence, for there is no violence in God. He sent him to call us rather than to accuse us; he sent him to love us rather than to judge us. No one has either seen God or made him known; it is God himself who has revealed himself. And he has manifested himself through faith, to which alone it is given to behold God. For God, the Lord and Creator of the universe, who made all things and arranged them in orderly fashion, has shown himself to be not only filled with love for us but also to be long-suffering in his dealings with us. Yes, he has always been, and will remain the same: kind, good, free from wrath, true, and the only one who is good; and he formed in his mind a great and ineffable plan which he communicated to his Son alone. He took on himself the burden of our iniquities, and he gave his own Son as a ransom for us, the holy one for transgressors, the blameless one for the wicked, the just one for the unjust, the incorruptible one for the corruptible, the immortal one or the mortal. Where except in the justice of God could we find that with which to cover our sins? By whom could we be justified – we who are wicked and ungodly – except by the only Son of God? What a wondrous exchange, operation, and unexpected benefits! The crime of so large number is covered over by the justice of a single just one. In the past, God first needed to convince our nature of its inability to obtain life for itself. Now God has shown us the Saviour capable of saving even what was impossible to save. In these two ways, he willed to lead us to trust in his goodness, to esteem him as our nourisher, Father, teacher, counsellor, healer, and our wisdom, light, honour, glory, power and life. All who are baptized and believe Christ present in this sacrament are invited to come forward for communion. Those who are unable to receive communion, or do not yet receive, are invited to come forward for a blessing. Formation on Sundays Music of Advent Series Advent is a season that reflects upon and hopes for the final coming of Christ. This series focuses on the music of the Advent season. The musical tradition helps build the anticipation of the faithful and expresses their deepest longings for the second advent of Jesus. Simultaneously we look toward the celebration of the Incarnation, or the first advent. This year, Old Testament readings from the Mass come from the prophets. In our first talk, we examine the prophetic texts that inform Advent hymns. In the second, Bishop Michael will present a session further exploring the music of Advent. In the third week, we will explore the “Advent Prose” which is a moving text sung by the choir. This compilation of texts from the prophet Isaiah consists of lyrical laments which ask God to remember his people. It concludes with words of God’s comfort. The last session will treat the “O” antiphons. This series of seven pleas (e.g. “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”) is prayed from December 16th to the 23rd. Thus we explore how the music of Advent supports the liturgy of the season.

MOTHERS UNION WORLDWIDE PARENTING COURSE TO BE OFFERED
NOMINATIONS FOR ANNUAL VESTRY

MEETING ELECTION OF PARISH
The Mothers’ Union is offering a parenting course at St. James’ Church starting Wednesday, January 9, 2013, from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Two of our members have been trained as facilitators by the chief Worldwide Mothers Union trainer and are eager to share their skills. The course is called Parents Supporting Parents. The Course is not didactic but constructed on a sharing basis. It is beneficial to all carers of children, male or female, married or unmarried. It is not just for parents who are experiencing difficulties, but to all involved with children as grandparents, teachers, nurses, baby sitters, youth leaders etc. It is free of charge. The Mothers’ Union has developed its own resource manual which has been adapted to suit the cultural and societal requirements of the individual countries. It is strictly non-religious in content. The course is arranged in eight sessions, one session per week lasting approximately two hours. They cover a wide range of topics and issues relating to parenting, grand-parenting or childminding. Sessions use a variety of techniques and activities to highlight the material covered. Participants are encouraged to share their experiences and strategies. Pertinent handouts are available and a homework focus is suggested to

You will find the list, and some background information to help you get to know the candidates, on the landing outside the Bishops’ Room door. Please note that the 2013 Annual Vestry Meeting will be held on Sunday, February 24th, immediately following High Mass. St. James’ News & Announcements practice new skills or ideas acquired from the session during the ensuing week. The first session will be in the May Gutteridge Room, and the rest of the sessions will be in the Bishops’ Room. Advertising leaflets, brochures and registration forms are available from Celia Dodds or the church office. The minimum number for a course to take place is eight and the maximum is twelve. It is required that participants pre-register for the course so that we will know how many to expect. Parents may bring new babies to the classes. If they have toddlers or young children whom they need to bring, childcare in another area will be provided. A light lunch of soup will be provided by the Mothers’ Union after each session.
STREET OUTREACH GIFT CARDS Again this Advent, Fr Matthew is receiving Gift Cards for distribution to disadvantaged members of our parish community. Favourite brands include: Tim Horton's, McDonalds, Army & Navy, and Subway. Suggested card amount is $10. This purchases a full meal and possibly a separate coffee, or for groceries at Army & Navy. Other amounts are most welcome. If possible, at time of purchase, request a receipt for each card. This provides a backup for the credit. Considering recent medical emergencies at St James’, there is a recognized need to try to have present at all services as much as possible, individuals currently trained in First Aid. Any parish member who holds current First Aid certification and is willing to be available to assist with First Aid emergencies (protected from liability under the Good Samaritan Act) when present at church services, is invited to please give her/his name to the office. Further, any parish member who would like to receive First Aid training in the near future with a group from St James’ so as to be available when attending church, to assist with First Aid emergencies, is also invited to give their name to the office.

St. James’ News & Announcements FLOWERS AT CHRISTMASTIDE The Flower Guild is asking parishioners for donations towards the purchase of flowers to decorate the Church for Christmastide. Any amount is gratefully accepted. There will be no flowers in the church during Lent, but please consider making a dedication for Christmas flowers. Phone or email your dedication to the church office by Dec. 10th so that your dedication will appear in the Christmas bulletins (which are being printed on Dec. 11th). Also, we could use holly. Please cut with a long stem, and deliver to the Church on Friday, Dec. 21st(during office hours) or at 9am on Dec. 22nd. Thank you, Margaret Vickers WORKSHOP: RESPONDING WITH AN AGITATED PERSON Fr Matthew Johnson will offer a brief workshop after High Mass (just after noon) next Sunday, the 16th. We will meet in the worship space for about 40 minutes, and will review the Welcome and Encounter mandate that governs our hospitality. Participants will be familiarized with the terms of Rules of Conduct at St James’ Church. We will look at guidelines for Responding with an Agitated Person, and explore practical ways of responding effectively and respectfully if someone becomes seriously agitated or has a crisis during worship. This will be of interest to Steps Welcomers, Narthex Guild members, Coffee Hosts, and others who seek to support the hospitality and welcome dimension of the public liturgies offered daily here at St James.

2013 ST. JAMES’ ORDO KALENDARS NOW AVAILABLE - IN FULL COLOUR Ordo Kalendars may be purchased from Reece Wrightman today after mass for $16.50 each. The paper is very high-quality, and the photos are stunning. This year’s theme is Elements of the Eucharist, and all of the images used were taken inside the church. Thank you to everyone who took the time to take photos and submit them for this year’s publication. We are truly blessed to have so many talented photographers at St. James’! COOPER PLACE PARKING December 1, 2012-November 30, 2013. This is for everyone who has a Parking Fob for Cooper Place. Many of you have been asking when the money is due for the annual parking fee for Cooper Place parking. The answer is – now. If you have any questions about this parking service a director from St. Luke’s will be available for the next 2 Sundays to answer your questions. Two of the three candidates for the position of Development Consultant have been interviewed and a third is scheduled for later this month. It is anticipated that a selection will be made by year end with work to begin early in the year. Donations for funding this process are still needed. They can be made payable to St. James’ Parish Foundation and are tax deductible. Questions can be directed to the committee at project@stjames.bc.ca or in writing to the office. They have pictures of churches from across Canada. Some people like to send them overseas as gifts. We have two new Christmas card designs for 2012, sold in packages of 12 cards with envelopes for $15.00. Christian messages! GUILDS & GROUPS: ANNUAL REPORTS Please have your annual reports, complete with the names of all members as well as the primary contact person, to the office by January 13th at the very latest. provided staff support for diocesan ministry and mission planning initiatives through all the instruments of the diocese, been staff support on numerous diocesan committees and working groups, and has been instrumental in developing new and exciting programs such as the Diocesan School for Leadership. Prior to March of 2011, Douglas was for nine years in the national office of The Episcopal Church in New York City finishing out his ministry February 28th, 2011, as Officer for Young Adult and Campus Ministries. Prior to 2002, Douglas served here in the Diocese of New Westminster, at St. Catherine, Port Coquitlam and St James. He was also the Chair of Interim Ministry. In his December 6th announcement Bishop Michael told staff that it takes three people to do the job of "bishop," the Bishop, the Administrative Assistant to the bishop, (currently the Rev. Eileen Nurse) and the Executive Archdeacon. Congratulations and best wishes to Douglas and please keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he embarks on this new phase of ministry.
NEW EXECUTIVE ARCHDEACON FOR THE DIOCESE APPOINTED The Rev. Douglas Fenton to succeed the Venerable Ronald Harrison January 1st, 2013. On Thursday afternoon, December 6th, 2012, Bishop Michael Ingham announced to Synod Staff that he has appointed current diocesan Director for Mission and Ministry, Rev. Douglas Fenton, Executive Archdeacon of the Diocese. Douglas will succeed the Ven. Ronald Harrison who retires on December 31st, 2012. Since March of 2011, Douglas has given oversight to the Ministry Assessment Process(MAP), HIGH MASS | 27
