PROCESSIONAL HYMN 276 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — For All the Saints For all the saints, who from their labours rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia! Thou wast their rock, their fortress and their might; thou, Lord, their captain in the well fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. Alleluia, Alleluia! O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, and win, with them the victor's crown of gold. Alleluia, Alleluia! O blest communion, fellowship divine! we feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia, Alleluia! And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia! The golden evening brightens in the west; soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest; sweet is the calm of Paradise the blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia! But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia, Alleluia!

Reader

A reading from the Book of Revelation. After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen." Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall ever be in my mouth. I will glory in the Lord; let the humble hear and rejoice. Proclaim the greatness of the Lord; let us exalt his Name together. Antiphon I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me out of all my terror. Look upon him and be radiant, and let not your faces be ashamed. I called in my affliction and the Lord heard me and saved me from all my troubles. Antiphon The angel of the Lord encompasses those who fear him, and he will deliver them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are they who trust in him! Fear the Lord, you that are his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing. The young lions lack and suffer hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good. Antiphon Psalm 34:1-10
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the First Letter of John. See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. 1 John 3:1-3

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and face the book of the Gospels
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." Matthew 5:1-12

Truly Jerusalem name we that shore, vision of peace, that brings joy evermore; wish and fulfillment can severed be ne’er, nor the thing prayed for come short of the prayer. There, where no troubles distraction can bring, we the sweet anthems of Sion shall sing, while for thy grace, Lord, their voices of praise thy blessèd people eternally raise. Now, in the meantime, with hearts raised on high, we for that country must yearn and must sigh, seeking Jerusalem, dear native land, through our long exile on Babylon's strand. Low before God with our praises we fall, of whom and in whom, and through whom are all: praise to the Father, and praise to the Son, praise to the Spirit, with them ever one.

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY This week has been spent planning formation for the coming months. Advent is round the corner and we are already thinking about Lent! I know! Slow down! We’ve had The Heart of the City Festival this past week which has included the bargain sale, a concert, and a performance by the music academy, the art show and the All Souls Mass too! That’s a lot to pack in, and none of it would be possible without volunteers: people who serve. Did you know that volunteering is part of what it means to be Canadian? I learned this when I became a citizen and I think it is a key part of Canadian culture as well as part of our ministry at St. James’, because volunteering is almost always an act of service. Jesus talked about this: “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great
among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:42-45).
Inform. Inspire. Invite.
Growing in Christ means taking these words to heart, and that’s not easy when we pack so much into our lives, and live in a culture where winning and being first is rewarded and highly valued. During this time where we reflect on what we have and what we are able to give, I encourage you to slow down and take a look at where you are spending yourself. It’s not just about money (although Jesus talks about that a lot!). Where are you spent? Your time? Your energy? Your gifts? It is good for us to be here. I give thanks for all that you do here and continue to be excited by the potential to serve here at St. James’. Mother Lucy

Mother Lucy TREASURER’S REPORT Our financial situation sits within the scope of the 2017 budget. To date, some expenditures have been slightly greater than planned, and rental income and regular giving have been lower than expected. It had been anticipated that by year-end the balance would come close to our target, however, agreements for substantial film industry productions in the final months of the year have been made and these will likely bring us to a surplus position. Generous bequests this year from our much missed Alice Rolfe, and Dr. John Conway, have added to our endowment. An earlier donation of Dr. Conway’s, of late last year, is now formally the John Conway Outreach Fund, the mission of which is the aid of refugees, both international and local. Preliminary work on the Rectory renovation has been underway for some time now and expenses on that front are just as expected from the budgeting process. We are thankful for our able investment managers at Odlum Brown, our accountant and dedicated office team, and our Rector, Wardens, and Trustees. Their work together in nurturing and administering God's gifts in the form of our endowment, your contributions to the parish of St. James', and those of the many who have gone before us, allow us to sustain the life and mission of St. James'.
