The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. A Reflection A PRAYER FOR ASSUMPTION-TIDE Holy Spirit, Giver of Life, Who didst overshadow Mary that she might become the Mother of Jesus, our Saviour, do thou likewise work silently within my heart to form within me the fullness of his redeemed and redeeming humanity. Give me his loving heart to burn with love for God and love for others, give me a share in his joy and his sorrow, his weakness and his strength, his labour for the world's salvation. May Mary, blessed among women, Mother of our Saviour, pray for me, that Christ may be formed in me, that I may live in union of heart and will with Jesus Christ, her Son, our Lord and Saviour. Amen. INTROIT Let us all rejoice in the Lord our God, as we celebrate a feast day in honour of the Virgin Mary: because of whose solemnity the angels are jubilant and sing praises to the Son of God. Gaudeamus (Mode I)
SOLEMN PROCESSION Priest People
The Lord be with you. And with thy Spirit.
During the solemn procession the following hymn will be sung. A station will be made at the Lady Altar, during which the versicle and response on page 8 will be sung. HYMN 188 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Ye Who Own the Faith of Jesus
Ye who own the faith of Jesus sing the wonders that were done, when the love of God the Father o’er our sin the victory won, when he made the Virgin Mary mother of his only Son. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary, full of grace. 6 | HIGH MASS
Blessèd were the chosen people out of whom the Lord did come, blessèd was the land of promise fashioned for his earthly home; but more blessed far the mother, she who bare him in her womb. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary, full of grace. Wherefore let all faithful people tell the honour of her name, let the Church, in her foreshadowed, part in her thanksgiving claim; what Christ's mother sang in gladness let Christ's people sing the same. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary, full of grace. Let us weave our supplications, she with us and we with her, for the advancement of the faithful, for each faithful worshipper, for the doubting, for the sinful, for each heedless wanderer. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary, full of grace. May the Mother's intercessions on our homes a blessing win, that the children all be prospered, strong and fair and pure within, following our Lord's own footsteps, firm in faith and free from sin. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary, full of grace. For the sick and for the agèd, for our dear ones far away, for the hearts that mourn in secret, all who need our prayers today, for the faithful gone before us, may the holy Virgin pray. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary, full of grace. HIGH MASS | 7
Praise, O Mary, praise the Father, praise thy Saviour and thy Son, praise the everlasting Spirit, who hath made thee ark and throne; o'er all creatures high exalted, lowly praise the Three in One. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary, full of grace.
STATION COLLECT Celebrant All
Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: Blessed art thou among women. Let us pray. Almighty Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, thou hast revealed the beauty of thy power by exalting the lowly virgin of Nazareth and making her the mother of our Saviour. May the prayers of this woman clothed with the sun bring Jesus to the waiting world and fill the void of incompletion with the presence of her child, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said: "Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good." Isaiah 7:10-15

If your children keep my covenant and my testimonies that I shall teach them, their children will sit upon your throne for evermore. For the Lord has chosen Zion, he has desired her for his habitation. Antiphon Psalm 132:6-10, 13-14
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians. When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever." Luke 1:46-55

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY The week before last, after a long search for a suitable craftsperson, a significant piece of work on the outside of the St. James’ building came to fruition: a sign-writer painted the name of the church above the main doors, and the designation of the memorial garden on the south wall below the Lady Chapel windows. I wonder how many of us noticed this last Sunday! Reflecting on this, two thoughts came to mind. First, we sometimes only see what we expect to see. We become so familiar with how things are, how we expect things to appear, that we do not immediately take note of change, of something new. I recall a reverse example, as it were: some years ago when I attended a college-reunion a friend and I were looking at college photographs of our era. To my consternation at first I could not see myself in any of the pictures until my friend pointed out that I did not wear a beard at that time. (He added, unnecessarily I thought, “And you were beautiful then!”) This reminds me of the need for
recollection, to attend to my surroundings and to people and situations I encounter, rather than as so often to rely on my preconceptions and assumptions. It reminds me too when reading the bible, for example, to be attentive, to be on the alert for a new insight, a new engagement with what may be a very familiar passage. Secondly, seeing the church’s name over the door reinforced for me the significance of naming, of owning our own identity and of our identity being acknowledged, open to recognition by others. To know or to be known by name enables relationship rather than casual passing by. John 20.15,16 portrays a powerful example of this: Mary Magdalen recognizes the risen Jesus only when he calls her by her name. “Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom you are looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him,

and I will take him away.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher).” (NRSV). And in Isaiah 43.1 the prophet has the Lord say, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” (NRSV again) May the Lord, who calls us, each one, by name, bless us and keep us. JAM JARS NEEDED The Women’s Guild is busy making preserves for your enjoyment. They welcome donations of jars 250 ml/8 oz or smaller. Jars may be left outside Helen’s Room (Parish Hall) labelled “Women’s Guild.” Thank you. CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS A long-standing tradition of Anglican churches is the rôle of Choral Scholar – a university student who receives a scholarship in exchange for singing in the choir. The programme adds voices to our choir, improving the tone, and balance – and also offers students a marvellous opportunity to gain experience singing some of the finest choral works and learning a wide range of church music. Additionally, the benefits of this programme continue throughout the year, as also over the summer months the music ministry is supported by our Choral Scholars. Based on the success over the past year, the Trustees have agreed to support the Choral Scholarship programme for another season starting in September in a fund-matching model. A number of generous donations have already been received from individual parishioners, and we are in need of some additional help. If you appreciate music, please consider supporting the Choral Scholarship programme. You can use the donation envelope from the pew and write 2435 Music Scholarship on the envelope. Or, go to www.stjames.bc.ca/donate to give online and specify 2435 Music Scholarship as the purpose of your donation.
Please take this booklet away with you to aid in your own reflection, prayers, and for your information.
