If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection God, thank you for a new year. May everyone in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another. As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time. Amen. https://www.loyolapress.com/our-catholic-faith/family/holidays-and-special-occasions/otherspecial-occasions/family-new-years-prayer Accessed 9th January 2019

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Isaiah. But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, "Give them up," and to the south, "Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth - everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made." Isaiah 43:1-7

Reader Allll

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. Antiphon The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; the Lord is upon the mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice, the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendour. Antiphon The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon; He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox. Antiphon

10 | HIGH MASS

The voice of the Lord splits the flames of fire; the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe and strips the forests bare. And in the temple of the Lord all are crying, "Glory!" Antiphon The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king for evermore. The Lord shall give strength to his people; the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. Antiphon Psalm 29

SECOND READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Book of Acts. Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. Acts 8:14-17

Sub-deacon Allll

HOLY GOSPEL

Deacon

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." Luke 3:15-17, 21-22

HYMN

Stand The People sing the hymn while the People’s gifts of bread, wine and money are brought forward. 628 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High

O love, how deep, how broad, how high! It fills the heart with ecstasy, that God, the Son of God, should take our mortal form for mortals' sake. God sent no angel to our race, of higher or of lower place, but wore the robe of human frame for us, and to this lost world came. For us he was baptized, and bore his holy fast, and hungered sore; for us temptations sharp he knew; for us the tempter overthrew. For us he prayed, for us he taught, for us his daily works he wrought; by words and signs, and actions, thus still seeking not himself but us. For us by wickedness betrayed, scourged, mocked, in purple robe arrayed, he bore the shameful cross and death; for us at length gave up his breath. 16 | HIGH MASS

For us he rose from death again, for us he went on high to reign, for us he sent his Spirit here to guide, to strengthen, and to cheer. To God whose boundless love has won salvation for us through the Son, to God the Father, glory be both now and through eternity.

SURSUM CORDA & PROPER PREFACE

Stand

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. Who by water and the Holy Spirit hast made us a holy people in Jesus Christ our Lord; thou dost renew that mystery in bread and wine and nourish us, to show forth they glory in all the world. PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Celebrant

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. HYMN

Sit or kneel 163 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — When Christ’s Appearing Was Made Known When Christ’s appearing was made known, King Herod trembled for his throne; but he who offers heavenly birth sought not the kingdom of this earth. The eastern sages saw from far and followed on his guiding star; by light their way to Light they trod, and by their gifts confessed their God. Within the Jordan’s sacred flood the heavenly Lamb in meekness stood, that he, to whom no sin was known, might cleanse his people from their own. And O what a miracle divine, when water reddened into wine! He spake the word, and forth it flowed in streams that nature ne’er bestowed. All glory, Jesus, be to thee for this thy glad Epiphany: whom with the Father we adore and Holy Ghost forevermore.

HYMN 527 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — How Firm a Foundation (tune: ST DENIO) How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in His excellent word! What more can He say than to you he hath said, who unto the Saviour for refuge have fled? "Fear not, I am with thee; O be not dismayed, for I am thy God and will still give thee aid. I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand. When through the deep waters I call thee to go, the rivers of woe shall not thee overflow; for I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless, and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress. When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, My grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply. The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine. The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose I will not—I will not desert to its foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I'll never—no never—no never forsake!"

The Thurible Notes from the Clergy Happy New Year! It is good to be back here among you after a whirlwind trip to the UK. I passed along the good wishes, hugs and prayers to my grandmother who turned 90 while I was there; she happily received them and we had a wonderful celebration with the whole family. While away and since returning I’ve had the opportunity to reflect on the past year and indeed on the changes here at St. James’. We came together to mourn and celebrate the lives of several of our long time members. We baptised new believers and welcomed newcomers on Sundays, and through the Open Church Ministry. People have come and gone, some moving away for jobs and retirement, and sometimes it feels as though we are on a treadmill, running to stand still in our ministry and development. In England this past week, I heard talk on the news of church attendance dropping, while overall the Archbishop of Canterbury has assured the wider church that more church plants than ever before are being planted in the UK. These new plants are often unconventional in their liturgy and worship, but the gospel is being proclaimed and people are

learning to walk with Christ, each in their own way. Here at St. James’ we maintain our traditions, but we too are seeing changes, the first being that our attendance over the past year has risen from an average of 110 to an average of 121, despite the attrition of the past year. The gospel is being proclaimed here and your witness and ministry is welcoming people into our community. Keep inviting, keep proclaiming the good news in word and deed! The Rectory renovations are heading towards completion and as we live into the space we will learn what is in store for us and begin to figure out how we will continue to be part of the community here in the Downtown Eastside. Change is afoot. All things that grow change and the Spirit of God never stands still. I am excited to see what this year brings and where we will be called. I hope you are too. Please keep St. James’ in your prayers and ask God to continue to guide us in our discipleship. On Jan. 27 there will be a parish lunch to give us the opportunity to welcome newcomers to St. James’. If you have begun

attending here in the last weeks, months, or year, please be sure to come. Likewise, if you have been attending forever, please make sure you attend. All are welcome! The start of the new year, gives us the opportunity to celebrate our community and get to know one another better. We will be sharing a meal and a few stories here and there. Come and see. Please let the office know if you plan to attend or sign up in the Narthex. Peace to you, Mother Lucy THE THURIBLE | 29
