If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection THIS TABLE The centuries have settled on this table Deepened the grain beneath a clean white cloth Which bears afresh our changing elements. Year after year of prayer, in hope and trouble, Were poured out here and blessed and broken, both In aching absence and in absent presence. This table too the earth herself has given And human hands have made. Where candle-flame At corners burns and turns the air to light The oak once held its branches up to heaven, Blessing the elements which it became, Rooting the dew and rain, branching the light. Because another tree can bear, unbearable, For us, the weight of Love, so can this table. Malcolm Guite

Blessed are they that dwell in thy house. They will always be praising thee. Let us pray. O God our heavenly Father, make the door of our parish church wide enough to receive all who need human love and fellowship and a Father’s care, and narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride, and uncharitableness. Here may the tempted find succour, and the sorrowing receive comfort; here may the careless be awakened to repentance, and the penitent be assured of thy mercy; and here may all thy children renew their strength in thee and go on their way rejoicing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
PROCESSIONAL HYMN 204 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Blessed City, heavenly Salem, v. 1-4 Blessed city, heavenly Salem, vision dear of peace and love, who, of living stones upbuilded, art the joy of heaven above, and, with angel cohorts circled, as a bride to earth dost move! From celestial realms descending, bridal glory round her shed, to his presence, decked with jewels, by her Lord shall she be led: all her streets, and all her bulwarks, of pure gold are fashionèd. Bright with pearls her portals glitter, they are open evermore; and, by virtue of his merits, thither faithful souls may soar, who for Christ's dear name in this world pain and tribulation bore.
Many a blow and biting sculpture fashioned well those stones elect, in their places now compacted by the heavenly Architect, who therewith hath willed for ever that his palace should be decked.

205 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Christ is made the sure foundation, v. 1, 3 & 4 Christ is made the sure foundation, and the precious corner-stone, who, the two walls underlying, bound in each, binds both in one, Holy Sion’s help for ever, and her confidence alone. To this temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of hosts, today; with thy wonted loving-kindness, hear thy people as they pray, and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls for ay.
Here vouchsafe to all thy servants gifts of grace by prayer to gain; here to have and hold for ever, those good things their prayers obtain, and hereafter, in thy glory, with thy blessèd ones to reign.

Let us pray. Almighty God, watchful and caring, our source and our end, all that we are and all that we have are thine. The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader
Be seated A reading from the Book of Genesis. Jacob left Beer-sheba and went towards Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, ‘I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’ Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!’ And he was afraid, and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.’ Genesis 28:10-17

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young; by the side of your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Antiphon Happy are they who dwell in your house! They will always be praising you. Happy are the people whose strength is in you! Whose hearts are set on the pilgrims’ way. Antiphon Behold our defender, O God; and look upon the face of your Anointed. For one day in your courts is better than a thousand in my own room, and to stand at the threshold of the house of my God than to dwell in the tents of the wicked. For the Lord God is both sun and shield; he will give grace and glory. Antiphon Psalm 84:1-4, 8-10
SECOND READING Reader
A reading from the First Letter of Peter. Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 1 Peter 2:1-5, 9-10 HIGH MASS | 11

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ John 20:19-21

HYMN
Stand The People sing the hymn while the People’s gifts of bread, wine and money are brought forward. 444 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Your Hand, O God, Has Guided Your hand, O God, has guided your flock, from age to age; the wondrous tale is written, full clear, on every page; our forebears owned your goodness, and we their deeds record; and both of this bear witness; one Church, one Faith, one Lord. Your heralds brought glad tidings to greatest as to least; they bade them rise, and hasten to share the royal feast; and this was all their teaching, in every deed and word, to all alike proclaiming one Church, one Faith, one Lord.
HIGH MASS | 17
When shadows thickly falling, engulfed the world in night, you summoned forth your servants, your messengers of light. On them and on your people your plenteous grace was poured, and this was still their message, one Church, one Faith, one Lord. And we, shall we be faithless, shall hearts fail, hands hang down? Shall we evade the struggle and cast away the crown? Not so; in God's deep counsels some better gift is stored; the covenant of promise, one Church, one Faith, one Lord. Your mercy will not fail us, nor leave your work undone; with your right hand to help us, your people shall be one; and then, by all creation, your name shall be adored, and this shall be their anthem: one Church, one Faith, one Lord.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. Heaven itself cannot contain thee, and thy glory fills all the world. Thou dost accept our setting apart of places for thy worship, and in them pour out thy gifts of grace upon thy faithful people. This table is a sign to us of the heavenly altar, where thy saints and angels praise thee. Here we have recalled the sacrifice of thy Son; here we have been fed with the body and blood of thy Son; here our sins have been forgiven; here we have tasted the joys of thy eternal kingdom. Grant that in these mysteries we may be united with one another and strengthened for service in thy world. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY In 1881 the first St. James Anglican Church popped up on the Burrard inlet. There is a plaque in Gastown that states: ON THIS SITE STOOD THE FIRST S.JAMES ANGLICAN CHURCH DEDICATED 15-V-1881 BURNED 13-VI-1886. We often remind ourselves that the church is the people, not just the building; our gathering together for worship, the reading of scripture and celebrating the Mass. On Monday October 2, the church doors will be open to welcome people to come in and sketch as it is World Architecture Day and our fabulous building is a unique example of Art Deco architecture in the midst of Vancouver’s glass towers and concrete boxes. Having a beautiful building is a gift and we use our space in worship to give Glory to God. People often speak about feeling transported inside St. James’ with our AngloCatholic liturgy and by the acoustics offered by the building. What we have is special, but what is essential as church furnishings go? Well, in the simplest terms: an altar and a font. Baptism and
Eucharist are the central sacraments of our faith. They mark us as Christ’s own and nourish us with Christ’s Spirit through the breaking of bread together. So if the church was to burn down again tomorrow, the church would not cease to be, because we (the people) are the church, and I feel certain that between us we could come up with an altar and a font. Our liturgy is very beautiful and indeed, transformative. However it is not the star of the show. Focus on Jesus present in the Mass, which is where true transformation and nourishment comes from.
Inform. Inspire. Invite.
I wonder what the people coming in to sketch on Monday will focus on. Where do you think they will find beauty in our building?
