A Reflection “RISEN TODAY”: THE RESURRECTION AS GOOD NEWS NOW I think the preaching of the resurrection of Jesus Christ today impacts directly on our lives, on what we want to communicate to people around us, and to the world in general: the Good News is rooted in the resurrection. To believe that Jesus is risen is to believe that when you've worked it all out, Jesus is the point where human histories converge. But that implies of course that there is such a thing as a human being. To say humanity exists, that there is such a thing as a human being, is to say there is something about being human that is non-negotiable: we are human because God has created us like this and we are human because God has destined us for communion with him through Jesus Christ and whatever human being you meet in any situation whatsoever, there is something absolutely central, non-negotiable about that. There is such a thing as humanity. Because Jesus is Lord, and if all human stories converge on him—if he is, as Browning said in his wonderful poem on the Fourth Gospel, 'the groom to every bride', the one who completes every human life—then there is such a thing as humanity. And that means we have grounds for resisting all those things that get in the way of humanity: all those ways, subtle and unsubtle, that human beings have invented to stop themselves and other people being human beings. So we begin with that firm pronouncement, that if Jesus is risen, there is a human destiny. Every human life has something about it, distinctive, immoveable, given by God, given in the hope of Christ. And I've always been very taken by those theologians, especially in the Eastern Christian world, who've emphasized that human beings were made with dignity and liberty and glory so that, one day, they would be proper companions for Jesus Christ. Human nature was endowed with all its gifts so that it would one day be a proper vehicle for the transforming work of God the Father. So without underrating the capacity of human beings for destructiveness and for getting their world in a mess, the resurrection imposes on us a very high doctrine of humanity. It tells us not only that God exists, but that we do, and that we have a purpose and a destiny. And if it's true that the resurrection tells us there's never going to be any change in the frame of reference in which God relates to us, that's the kind of conviction that leads people to resist so bravely when they're up against de humanizing or inhuman systems. The people who resist de humanizing tyrannies in our age or in any age, are on the whole people who believe not only in God but in humanity. Not in humanity in a sort of humanistic and optimistic sense but believe that humanity has its dignity and its glory because it's called to communion with God in Jesus Christ. HYMN 216 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem Ye choirs of new Jerusalem, your sweetest notes employ, the paschal victory to hymn in strains of holy joy. For Judah's lion bursts his chains, crushing the serpent's head; and cries aloud through death's domains to wake the imprisoned dead. Devouring depths of hell their prey at his command restore; his ransomed hosts pursue their way where Jesus goes before. Triumphant in his glory now to him all power is given; to him in one communion bow all saints in earth and heaven. All glory to the Father be, all glory to the Son, all glory, Holy Ghost to thee, while endless ages run.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader
Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts. Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" He asked, "Who are you, Lord?" The reply came, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do." Acts 9:1-6

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
I will exalt you, O Lord, because you have lifted me up and have not let my enemies triumph over me. O Lord my God, I cried out to you, and you restored me to health. You brought me up, O Lord, from the dead; you restored my life as I was going down to the grave. Antiphon Sing to the Lord, you servants of his; give thanks for the remembrance of his holiness. For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye, his favour for a lifetime. Weeping may spend the night, but joy comes in the morning. Antiphon While I felt secure, I said, "I shall never be disturbed. You, Lord, with your favour, made me as strong as the mountains." Then you hid your face, and I was filled with fear. Antiphon I cried to you, O Lord; I pleaded with the Lord, saying, "What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the Pit? will the dust praise you or declare your faithfulness? Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me; O Lord, be my helper." Antiphon You have turned my wailing into dancing; you have put off my sack-cloth and clothed me with joy. Therefore my heart sings to you without ceasing; O Lord my God, I will give you thanks for ever. Antiphon Psalm 30
SECOND READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Revelation to John.
Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, singing with full voice, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honour and glory and blessing!" Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all 10 | HIGH MASS

that is in them, singing, "To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honour and glory and might forever and ever!" And the four living creatures said, "Amen!" And the elders fell down and worshipped. Revelation 5:11-14 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, "Children, you have no fish, have you?" They answered him, "No." He said to them, "Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off.
HIGH MASS | 11
When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs." A second time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go." (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, "Follow me." John 21:1-19

Where the paschal blood is poured, death's dark angel sheathes his sword; Israel's hosts triumphant go through the wave that drowns the foe. Christ, the Lamb whose blood was shed, paschal victim, paschal bread; with sincerity and love eat we manna from above. Mighty victim from on high, powers of hell beneath thee lie; death is broken in the fight, thou hast brought us life and light. Now thy banner thou dost wave, conquering Satan and the grave. See the prince of darkness quelled; heaven’s bright gates are open held.

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Our heartbeat is what keeps us going! Like our breathing, most of the time we do not notice it, but it is essential, of our essence, our very being. Over the past few months I have had the opportunity four times now to engage in our Primate Fred Hiltz’s exercise “Heartbeat of the Church,” with four different groups. Each time has been an illuminating and supportive experience, sharing insights on our praying with fellow-pilgrims on the way.
Prayer is the heartbeat of our life at St James’, centred on the daily offering of public worship in Morning & Evening Prayer and in the celebration of the Eucharist. I know too how it is at the centre of the lives of many in the congregation: regular intercession, meditation, reading of the Bible. It is this prayer which sustains us on our Christian journey, and enables us to be active signs of God’s love in and for his creation.
Archbishop Fred has been encouraging the whole of our Anglican Church of Canada to reflect on the life of prayer, seeing it as the heartbeat which keeps the blood flowing through the veins of the church, in dioceses, parishes and individuals. While the exercise is best done with others, it also works as a personal reflection/ meditation. Go to: www.anglican.ca and press the Heartbeat link on the front page to see for yourself.
The group which shares Morning and Evening Prayer daily in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel would welcome new members, so that we can maintain this important ministry at St James’. Anyone interested, please have a word with me.
