Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Becoming a community of disciples: putting the Gospel in the centre The Gospel in the Centre of our Sacred Circle has become an important and dynamic part of the growing spiritual movement among Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island. Any event or meeting is organized and carried out with the Gospel in the centre. Daily discipleship in a Sacred Circle We hope that you will join us by Reading the Gospel daily as a personal practice. On a regular basis (we recommend at least twice a month) place the Gospel in the centre of a circle of love and prayer with other relatives. Whenever we meet, to place the Gospel in the centre of our gatherings. Pray daily for the life, health, and faithfulness of the Sacred Circle.

Guiding principles As Gospel-Based Disciples we commit To regularly engage the Gospel. To take seriously our own spiritual formation. To nurture and foster the spiritual formation of others. To live the Baptismal Covenant. To live as a community of disciples. To foster reconciliation, healing, and vision. To pray and worship regularly. To respect the spiritual traditions, values, and customs of our many peoples. To take full responsibility for our local ministries. Rule of life Creator God, we acknowledge and give thanks that: In Jesus we know we belong to a Sacred Circle with the Gospel and Baptismal Covenant in the centre. In this Sacred Circle: We are all related; We live a compassionate and generous life; We respect all life, traditions, and resources. We commit ourselves to spiritual growth, discipleship, and consensus. From the Anglican Church of Canada / Indigenous Ministrieshttp://www.anglican.ca/im/introgbd/ 4 | HIGH MASS

Rite of Sprinkling With Holy Water PRELUDE Pastorale Sonata in G (Intermezzo) — Josef Rheinberger Ich ruf’ zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ (BWV 639) — J. S. Bach The Rite of Sprinkling with Holy Water is a ceremony that traditionally takes place before the beginning of High Mass on Sundays. This ceremony goes back to at least the 9th century, but was for the most part done away with during the reforms of the liturgy in the 1960s. We have revived it here at St. James’ for the Easter season as a remembrance of our baptism. As the Altar Party and the Sacred Ministers enter, the antiphon proper to the Easter season for this ceremony, the “Vidi Aquam” (from the Latin, “I beheld water”) taken from Ezekiel 47.1-2, 12, is sung. The Altar is first sprinkled, then the clergy and servers, and then the Celebrant goes throughout the Church sprinkling all the people with the holy water which was blessed previously. The ceremony is concluded back at the Altar with versicles and responses, and a prayer, as follows below. It is customary to bow to the Celebrant as they come near you and to sign yourself with the the cross as you are sprinkled with the Holy Water. The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. Acts 2:42-47

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me beside still waters. Antiphon You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup is running over. Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Antiphon Psalm 23:1-2, 5-6

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Peter. For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God's approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth." When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls. 1 Peter 2:19-25

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Jesus said, "Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers." Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate." John 10:1-10

Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

Allll

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God.

Allll

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the relationships which currently exist in our Parish among indigenous and non-indigenous parishioners. Collegium (St. James’ clergy and the Rector’s warden) met this week to review our mutual work and responsibilities of prayer, worship and pastoral care. “Integrated ministry,” with, to and by indigenous parishioners happens all the time at St. James’. Here follows a snapshot from our Collegium review of the Parish this week. A long-standing parishioner (of indigenous heritage) continues to receive medical attention at an intensive care unit. Clergy and laity, parishioners and neighbours, have visited daily. Together we keep a vigil of prayer and pastoral care with thankfulness for the constant medical attention being given and the life of faith of our fellow parishioner. A neighbour (of indigenous heritage) well known and loved by many laity and clergy has begun to attend the liturgy of the Church in recent weeks. This is all the more remarkable since the person has not been in a church for many decades. On Sunday last, during the High Mass, our parishioner Kelvin Bee – a teaching elder in the neighbourhood and residential school survivor – asked for a number of blan-

kets to be blessed, some of which were then wrapped around members of his family present at the liturgy. I found it tremendously powerful and moving to be invited into this prayerful and practical act of reconciliation. During the week, a highly engaged parishioner of indigenous heritage, offered practical pastoral support to me and the clergy team with an emerging pastoral emergency and a pastoral office. I am deeply appreciative for this parishioner’s many ministries at St. James’, their presence and passion for our Lord Jesus Christ. Collegium made an intervention in response to an intensifying pastoral emergency with a parishioner of indigenous heritage, well known, respected and loved by many of us. Thankfully the timing seems to have been providential and we are hopeful for an outcome which leads to further healing and grace. There is much more when we consider the specialized ministry of the Street Outreach Initiative and its work which is often alongside indigenous parishioners and neighbours; and our Parish’s longstanding ministry for young Aboriginal Women through the Coming Home Society; and other ministry and works of mercy in our midst, but hidden. Lee Johnson

Growing up near the centre of the continent on a chain of lakes in rolling countryside, Lee Johnson developed a love of Nature in all its forms. In early youth, the poetry of Wordsworth called to him with the force of a conversion experience, showing how interactions with Nature could be recreated in poetry. Later, as a professor for four decades at the University of British Columbia (1970-2012), Lee’s academic work included two books on Wordsworth and articles on other masters of the metrical art, including Vergil, Milton, and T.S. Eliot. Poetria Nova pulls together Lee’s love of Nature, Renaissance and Romantic poetry, music, astronomy, and mathematics in its distinctive exploration of the hierarchy of love and metaphysical themes in forms that advance the art of poetry as a metrical response to the rhythms of Nature. “These poems”, Lee Johnson writes in his Preface to Poetria Nova, “are basically out of step with modern verse because of their formal metrical composition, metaphysical themes, and ‘visionary’ character. They

26 | THE THURIBLE

attempt to extend and enrich the poetic art, however, and to that end may engage readers who are looking for something different. . . . I find the presence of creativity and love in all that we behold. The Universe consists of energy-events at all levels, and these energyevents have their echoes in our own dynamic choices and explorations of life. The composition of poetry is thus an act of love and an imitation, no matter how minute, of the conceptual reality that explains why there is being rather than nothing.”

We are now accepting submissions for the upcoming issue, set to be released on June 29th (following the Feast of St. John the Baptist on June 24th). The theme for the upcoming issue is "The person and presence of the Holy Spirit in our life and in the life of the Church." This theme relates both to the Feast of Pentecost (June 8) and to the Holy Trinity (Trinity Sunday, June 15). The connection between the life of the Holy Spirit in our own Parish and in the wider Church, or the gifts of the Holy Spirit, might also be explored. While we give priority to submissions related to the theme, submissions on any topic are most welcome. The deadline for submissions is Monday, June 2nd. QUOTE OF THIS WEEK I believe that we are at that moment in Canadian life, where we may begin to perceive the hand of God that placed in our beginnings a future that up until now none of this has imagined possible. That future when indigenous people have justice, and what God has always intended for them; but also all Canadians find a way of life that is honourable and good for each of us and for all those who come to be a part of this land. OUR PARISH REQUIEM MASS: RH MAXWELL N'BUR On Tuesday May 20 at 9:30 a.m. a Requiem Mass will be offered in the Lady Chapel for the repose of the soul of RH. Our fellow pilgrim and parishioner RH died on Tuesday April 29th. RH has worshipped at St. James' for a number of years. Due to his deteriorating health he rarely attended the liturgy during the past year. Our pastoral care ministry has kept in touch with him. We give thanks for his presence among us and for his hunger to know Jesus Christ. Eternal rest grant to your servant RH, O Lord. May he and all the departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. SACRED & SASSY II Friday, May 23, 7:00 pm in the Church The St. James’ Choir presents Sacred & Sassy II, an event to benefit the Choir and the Saint James Music Academy. The Choir will perform exquisite works by Byrd, Tallis, Bruckner, Duruflé and others in the church, followed by a dessert party, silent auction, and entertainment in the Parish Hall. Tickets are $20, available from Choir members or at the door. YOUTHWORKS Young people from YouthWorks will be joining us again this year. The youth leaders will be here from May 24 and participants will be here June 22 to August 1, leaving at 9:00 am. Judging from last year’s experience they should bring a great deal of energy to the parish. With that in mind, we once again invite ministries, guilds and individuals with tasks that can be done by the participants to inform me, either directly or through the office, so they can be added to the schedule. Last year they did gardening at St. Luke’s, power washing at St. James’ Place, painting and general cleanup around the church, as well as helping a parishioner paint her fence. We also ask that you uphold these young people in your prayers on their Christ-centred mission visit to Vancouver. Reece Wrightman

DIDO’S “DID YOU KNOW?” The Anglican Church has been in relationship with Indigenous people in Canada since 1753 when the Rev. Thomas Wood came as a missionary to the Miqmaq people. Indigenous peoples in Canada were speaking approximately 53 different languages when the Europeans first arrived. During the century following Confederation, the Anglican Church ran approximately 26 of the 80 church-run, government-funded “Indian Residential Schools.” Between 50 and 100 thousand Aboriginal children attended those Anglican schools. Indigenous people make up four per cent of the Canadian Anglican population. About 225 Canadian Anglican congregations have all or nearly all Indigenous membership. There are approximately 130 Indigenous Anglican priests in Canada, many of them working on a nonstipendiary or volunteer basis. Indigenous people make up more than one third of the Anglican population in five of the 30 Canadian dioceses (Arctic, Caledonia, Keewatin, Moosonee, Saskatchewan). In the Diocese of the Arctic, about 90 per cent of the Anglicans are Indigenous people, mainly Inuit. http://www.anglican.ca/im/ facts/

LITURGY VIGIL OF THE GOSPELS ON THE EVE OF PENTECOST On the Eve of Pentecost, Saturday June 7, at 3:30 p.m. (after Evening Prayer at 3:00 p.m.) we will be keeping a Vigil of the Gospels. The four Gospels will be read aloud continuously before the Blessed Sacrament. This is a special and rare opportunity to experience the power of the Gospel narrative when read without interruption. On the Eve of Pentecost and before the Blessed Sacrament we can ask for the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit for ourselves, our Parish, the Church and the World. You are welcome to come and go during the vigil, or attend it in full. You may wish to bring a cushion and / or a blanket. Readers will be asked to read for a period up to half an hour each. Please contact Ruth Greenaway-Robbins email ruthgrsoprano@me.com if you would like to read at the vigil. A continuous reading aloud of the Gospels is approximately eight and a half hours in duration. For more information please contact Fr. Mark, or Ruth Greenaway-Robbins. "With friends at University we kept a vigil of the Gospels. It was a remarkable and blessed experience. It was amazing to hear the entire Gospel narrative without interruption. It was a full immersion experience in the witness of the Gospels! Something we cannot experience when snippets of the Gospels are read at a liturgy. To this day I remember moments of the vigil vividly. It was as if I had met Jesus and his disciples in a new way. Being at the Vigil was to experience the Gospels in a wholly new and powerful way." Fr. Mark

COMMEMORATION Saint Matthias the Apostle May 14 Today we commemorate Matthias, who was chosen to take the place of Judas Iscariot in the company of the twelve apostles. We know nothing about his life and ministry beyond the first chapter of the Book of Acts. The eleven apostles wanted a twelfth to complete their number, and the lot fell to Matthias. We never find out what made him the better candidate, nor do we ever hear of him again in all the New Testament. We are left with the impression that he was important only because there needed to be twelve apostles.

According to the Book of Acts, the Apostles were appointed for the sake of proclaiming Jesus to the children of Israel. “Israel” was originally the name of a person, and that person was Jacob, the grandson of Abraham. He had twelve sons, and they became the patriarchs of the twelve Hebrew tribes that Moses led out of Egypt into freedom. That was the reason for having twelve apostles. They were meant to be the twelve patriarchs of the new Israel, who would lead all Jews out of this present age into the glorious liberty of the kingdom of heaven. Matthias was chosen to fill up the ancient number of twelve and thus fulfill Israel’s heritage by helping to beget the new Israel “in the Spirit.” By honouring him today, we commit ourselves to a similar task, by enabling others to become children of the new Israel, begotten in the Spirit through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. COMMEMORATION The Founding of St. James’ Social Services by May Gutteridge, 1961 May 15 May Gutteridge‘s memorable life provides inspiration to Christians, immigrants, social workers, the poor, [and] men and women throughout the world. She began her legacy of charitable work in Vancouver … in 1959 only four years after arriving from Britain. She stood alone (as this was still the era where a woman’s place was in the home) without an income or monetary compensation, to begin a long turbulent journey to change a world of deeply held prejudices. Her unshakable conviction in her faith and in a person’s ability to rise above adversity to live meaningful lives guided her through 30 years of devoted care for a community famous for its lost souls and broken dreams. Born May 21, 1917, in Gosport, Hampshire, England, … May Gutteridge was a WREN [Women’s Royal Naval Service] during the Second World War. She then worked for a national Institute of Houseworkers, and as secretary to an engineering firm. She and husband Arthur … emigrated to Saskatchewan in 1955, where she did substitute teaching and re-opened a school in a remote area of Saskatchewan near the Montana border for a small group of children who could not get schooling otherwise. By then the mother of a daughter and two sons, she moved to British Columbia in 1958….She was a regular worshipper at St. James’ Church, attending High Mass every Sunday, and also the Thursday morning Mass. At the church she was the (unpaid) “Parish Worker.” She once told an interviewer she felt that title was her greatest honour. In 1961 she revitalized a Pensioners’ Club in the basement of [St. James’]…. Her work with pensioners was soon followed with the formation of an emergency hostel for women, a sheltered workshop, legal aid, the conversion of a hotel to a residence for alcoholics and later the mentally ill, an intermediate care facility for seniors, a recycling project, a hospice, and other services. Nearly the entire city block on which St. James’ Church stands now houses society agencies. From work in the basement of St. James’ …, St. James Community Service Society has grown to become one of the largest social service agencies in Vancouver. The Order of Canada was awarded to [May] in 1981, which cited her work in downtown Vancouver along with her “eloquent exposure of injustices.” Other honours included the Silver Eagle Feather Award for outstanding contribution to Native People, the Brock House Award as B.C. Senior of 1986, the Distinguished Pioneer Award from the City of Vancouver, and the Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, from Simon Fraser University in 1987. http://maygutteridge.com/ THE THURIBLE | 33
