Fifth Sunday of Easter | April 28, 2013 | 10:30 AM

Welcome Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES •To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; •To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God.

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection The union that binds the members of Christ together is not the union of profound confidence in the power of an organization. The Church is united by the humility as well as by the charity of her members. Hers is the union that comes from the consciousness of individual fallibility and poverty, from the humility which recognizes its own limitations and accepts them, the meekness that cannot take upon itself to condemn, but can only forgive because it is conscious that it has itself been forgiven by Christ. The union of Christians is a union of friendship and mercy, a bearing of one another’s burdens in the sharing of divine forgiveness. Christian forgiveness is not confined merely to those who are members of the Church. To be a Christian one must love all people, including not only one’s own enemies but even those who claim to be the ‘enemies of God.’ ‘Whosoever is angry with his brother or sister shall be in danger of judgment. Love your enemies, do good to them that hate you, pray for them that persecute and speak calumny of you, that you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven.’ The solidarity of the Christian community is not based on the awareness that the Church has authority to cast out and to anathematize, but on the realization that Christ has given her the power to forgive sin in his name and to welcome the sinner to the banquet of his love in the holy Eucharist. More than this, the Church is aware of her divine mission to bring forgiveness and peace to all men and women. This means not only that the sacraments are there for all who will approach them, but that Christians themselves must bring love, mercy and justice into the lives of their neighbours, in order to reveal to them the presence of Christ in his Church. And this can only be done if all Christians strive generously to love and serve all people with whom they come into contact in their daily lives.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts. Now the apostles and the believers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also accepted the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him, saying, "Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?" Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by step, saying, "I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners; and it came close to me. As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and birds of the air. I also heard a voice saying to me, 'Get up, Peter; kill and eat.' But I replied, 'By no means, Lord; for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.' But a second time the voice answered from heaven, 'What God has made clean, you must not call profane.' This happened three times; then everything was pulled up again to heaven. At that very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we were. The Spirit told me to go with them and not to make a distinction between them and us. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man's house. He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, 'Send to Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; he will give you a message by which you and your HIGH MASS | 9

entire household will be saved.' And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?" When they heard this, they were silenced. And they praised God, saying, "Then God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life." Acts 11:1-18

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Revelation to John. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and

crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true." Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life." Revelation 21:1-6

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot come.' I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." John 13:31-35

SURSUM CORDA & PROPER PREFACE

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. But chiefly we are bound to praise thee for the glorious resurrection of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the very Paschal Lamb, which was offered for us, and hath taken away the sin of the world; who by death hath destroyed death, and by his rising to life again hath restored us to everlasting life. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Formation on Sundays THE CHRISTIAN IMAGINATION: THE LIFE OF CHRIST IN POETRY

As we all know, the gospels relate the history and facts of our Salvation by God through the Incarnation, Passion, and Resurrection of our Lord. All four versions of Jesus’s life come down to us as prose narratives, and it is through that medium that we learn His “good news.” Throughout the centuries, writers have employed other kinds of language and literary form as they contemplate the meaning of Christ’s teaching and Sacrifice. Poetry, in particular, may provide a different access to spiritual truth, one that seems intuitive and emotional rather than rational. As a literary and linguistic form, poetry offers an alternative language through which we can experience and reflect on God’s message. Over the next five Sundays of Eastertide, we will read and discuss modern and contemporary poems as we construct an imaginative and impressionistic Salvation narrative. Through selected poetry, our series of church and guest speakers will explore the Annunciation of Christ, His ministry, the Passion of our Lord, the Resurrection, Christ’s Ascension into Heaven, and Pentecost. Please come. Learn about poets perhaps unfamiliar to you and enrich your experience of Easter this spring. April 28: The Resurrection Leader: Professor Nicholas Hudson May 5: The Ascension and Pentecost Leader: Paul Stanwood On May 19, we will celebrate the great feast of Pentecost, which, in the Church, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. The account of Pentecost is found in Acts 2:1-21. In Christian faith, the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity. What are the roots of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit: in scripture, in tradition, and in reason or experience? How does the Holy Spirit relate to the other persons of the Trinity, the Father and the Son? What is the work of the Holy Spirit in us? May 12: The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit Leader: Mother Jessica Schaap Read all the talks about salvation from the last Formation series on the website under “Christian Education - Educational Resources.” Formation is on Sundays in the Bishops’ Room at 9:30am. This is our annual campaign to support our global programs, Literacy $ Financial Education (MULFEP), Family Life (MUFLP) and Parenting (WWPP) and the Relief Fund. Many of you do not have a mother still alive, but you may wish to buy a gift in memory of her, or purchase a gift for a needy African mother who does not have the means to feed her family. PAX Everyone has seen the beautiful Easter issue of our quarterly news magazine, freely available to all St. James’ parishioners and to our many friends. For attractive content, superlative design, and professional editing, PAX has few if any peers among parish church publications. Yet PAX exists on a tiny budget, relying almost entirely on the generosity of a few parishioners: some provide funds to pay for a whole issue, some offer a donation as a kind of subscription. We currently print about 300 copies of each issue, at a cost of nearly $900. Contributions, such as a regular subscription of $15.00 for the year, or a gift of any amount, are needed to continue PAX. PWRDF UPDATE Christ Church Cathedral has undertaken an initiative entitled '50 Days 500 Nets' for the 50 days of Easter in which the goal is to raise funds for the purchase of 500 mosquito nets to combat the spread of malaria in the African countries of Burundi, Tanzania, and Mozambique. This is part of a foreign aid project entitled 'Spreads the Nets' the cathedral undertook in support of new programming that PWRDF (The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund) is doing in these countries in conjunction with a CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency) grant it received for combating HIV/AIDS and preventive health care initiatives during the period 2012-2016. Malaria is one of the biggest health challenges and killers in Africa especially of children and those with immune systems damaged by HIV/AIDS. Working with local partners PWRDF is looking to provide 60,000 treated mosquito nets along with the community health education needed to make their use as effective as possible. With matching CIDA funding of 3:1 a gift of $10 buys one mosquito net and all the necessary support services (costing about $38 all told). These nets are simple to use and can make the difference between life and death. St. James’ and other parishes in the diocese can support the cathedral and PWRDF in this economical and effective life supporting program. Donations in excess of $10 are eligible for a tax receipt. For more information and if you would like to support the cathedral and PWRDF with this program please see/contact Peter Goodwin, PWRDF parish liaison.
