Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection From The Text of the Reflections of Abba Zosimas translated by John Chryssavgis “Once upon a time a stone-carver, whom they also call a gem-engraver because he possessed certain precious stones and diamonds, embarked on a ship together with his sons, in order to travel for purposes of trade. It so happened that he providentially grew to admire one of the servants on the boat, who would attend him, and the two shared meals together. One day, this particular servant overheard the sailors whispering and planning among themselves to throw the stone-carver overboard because of the precious stones that he possessed. So the servant, who was deeply saddened, came to the stone-carver in order to attend to him, as it was his custom. The latter asked him why he was sad that day, but the servant kept this to himself and did not respond at all. Therefore, the stone-carver asked him again: ‘Please tell me, what is the matter with you?’ Then the servant broke down in tears and told him: ‘The sailors are conspiring against you in such and such a way.’ The stone-carver said: ‘Is this true?’ The servant replied: ‘Yes. That is what they have planned among themselves.’ Then, the stone-carver called his sons and told them: ‘Whatever I tell you, do it without hesitation.’ Then, he spread out a sheet and began to say to them: ‘Bring me the treasure boxes’; and they did. The stone-carver began to lay out all of the gemstones. After spreading them out on the sheet, he began to say: ‘Is this what life is about? Am I to risk battling for my life in the seas for the sake of these? Am I about to die in a short while, without taking with me anything from this world?’ And he said to his sons: ‘Empty everything into the sea.’ On hearing his words, they cast everything into the sea. The sailors were astonished, but their conspiracy was abolished.”

PRELUDE Chorale sur ’O filii et filiae’ — Denis Bédard

Rite of Sprinkling With Holy Water At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand.

Stand

The Rite of Sprinkling with Holy Water is a ceremony that traditionally takes place before the beginning of High Mass on Sundays. This ceremony goes back to at least the 9th century, but was for the most part done away with during the reforms of the liturgy in the 1960s. We have revived it here at St. James’ for the Easter season as a remembrance of our baptism. As the Altar Party and the Sacred Ministers enter, the antiphon proper to the Easter season for this ceremony, the “Vidi Aquam” (from the Latin, “I beheld water”) taken from Ezekiel 47.1-2, 12, is sung. The Altar is first sprinkled, then the clergy and servers, and then the Celebrant goes throughout the Church sprinkling all the people with the holy water which was blessed previously. The ceremony is concluded back at the Altar with versicles and responses, and a prayer, as follows on page 8. It is customary to bow to the Celebrant as they come near you and to sign yourself with the the cross as you are sprinkled with the Holy Water.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

All

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

All

Let us pray. Merciful God, thou hast prepared for those who love thee riches beyond imagination. Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts. While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, "Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days. Acts 10:44-48

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvellous things. With his right hand and his holy arm has he won for himself the victory. Antiphon He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. Sing to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the voice of song. Antiphon Psalm 98:1-2, 4-6

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of John. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. 1 John 5:1-6

Jesus said, "As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another." John 15:9-17

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” +

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY In everything do to others as you would have them do to you: for this is the law and the prophets. Matthew 7.12 This instruction from Jesus appears near the end of the Sermon on the Mount. This “Golden Rule” is truly the summary of “Love your neighbours as yourself.” It appears also in three of the Baptismal vows where we are asked:

we treat one another, in the way we speak and in the way we treat another’s belongings. Respect includes honouring elders for the wisdom they can teach us about living. Being respectful helps others to feel valued which is what every person deserves.

Respect includes honoring the rules that govern our lives within our country, province, community “Will you seek and serve Christ in all and home. Without respect for laws there would be chaos. “Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and Respect includes self-respect respect the dignity of every human which means we protect our rights being?” to privacy and modesty and if someone violates them it must be “Will you strive to safeguard the stopped. THE BLANKET EXERCISE The St. James’ Social Justice Group and the EcoJustice Group of the Diocese of New Westminster thank everyone for all your excellent work in gathering for and organizing The Blanket Exercise on May 2nd. It was beautifully done with the indigenous leadership of our own Elder Kelvin Bee and Brander McDonald, Indigenous Justice Coordinator of the Diocese of New Westminster. This KAIROS resource brings so much of the history, the struggle and the present together. Many gifts of leadership and offering and hospitality were given graciously. St. James' Social Justice Group has made this relationship building and understanding of our history a priority. Fr. Matthew Johnson WELCOMING One of the things that St James has always done is invited everyone to join in whether it be attending worship, joining a guild, or participating in a study group. And for those of us who have been around for a while we get to know the particularities of the place. For newcomers and visitors, however, it can all be a bit daunting and even overwhelming at times. Some people have a more tenacious personality than others and are committed to figuring it all out. Others might be intimidated to even ask for assistance and simply leave. Our job, as members of the Church, is to make it easy for people to access our community and especially our liturgies. One small way in doing so is the recent inclusion in the Mass booklet of the words to the hymns. This is not to replace the opportunity for anyone who may choose to use the hymn books. It is to make the ability to participate in the liturgy more accessible for those who are new or visiting for the first time.

Please take the time to greet anyone you’ve not seen for a while or are seeing for the first time. We all like to be called by our name. (That’s part of what we do every time we baptize someone – we name them before God.) And if you can’t remember the person’s name simply say “Please remind me of your name,” and repeat it back aloud, until it embeds itself in your memory. Father Fenton SOUND SYSTEM Some have been expressing frustration at not being able to hear the preachers and/or lectors/intercessors at Mass. To this end we have had a sound technician adjust the equipment to maximize the output. I will also be meeting with those who read, prayer and preach from the lectern and pulpit to improve upon their “microphone technique.” Father Fenton KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. Gospel: Today’s gospel reading is part of Jesus’ dialogue during the last super in John’s gospel. Jesus talks about both knowledge and love. Knowledge is important. It is important to know who God is. Yet his command is not to know but to love. Knowledge is given to us but action is our response. We see an example of the action of love just a few chapters earlier in John’s gospel. Jesus takes on the role of a servant as he washes the disciples’ feet. This is an action of love that is sacrificial. He puts the needs of the other before his own. Parents: How do we experience love in our families? When have we seen someone put our needs before their own? Have we ever experienced love from a stranger? What are ways that we can be more loving to those around us? Explanation of practice: One reason why we all come to mass on Sundays is to be together. In both this week and last week’s gospel, we hear Jesus calling us to abide in him. If we all are abiding in Jesus, then we THE THURIBLE | 21

are in him together, for there is only one Jesus. Elsewhere in Scripture our unity is referred to as Christ’s body. While we can pray to God and worship him on our own, we come together so we can live into this idea of being one body. It is an act of love to come together for mass.

NEPAL EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE PWRDF continues to respond through the ACT Alliance to the devastation caused by the earthquake in Nepal. PWRDF has helped to provide food, blankets and tarpaulins to 820 families in the hardest hit areas of the Kathmandu valley through ACT member the Lutheran World Federation (LWF). According to LWF, lack of shelter remains the biggest challenge. The need for tarpaulins by far exceeds the number given out. Your help is needed to supply tarpaulins, blankets, food and other relief supplies and to begin the rebuilding process in Nepal. All donations to PWRDF between April 25 and May 25, 2015 for the Nepal earthquake relief efforts will be matched, dollar for dollar, by the Government of Canada into their Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund, which will be used to provide humanitarian relief. Ready to eat meals are being delivered to families who lost everything in the earthquake in Nepal. Donations can be made in the following ways:

RELATIONSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS GOD & THE INDIAN May 20 - 30, 2015 Firehall Arts Centre 280 East Cordova Street, Vancouver Box Office 604.689.0926 Celebrated playwright Drew Hayden Taylor explores the complex process of healing with this heartbreaking and beautifully told story that flashes with moments of his trademark irreverent humour: While panhandling outside a coffee shop, Johnny, a Cree woman who lives on the streets, is shocked to recognize a face from her childhood, which was spent in a residential school. Desperate to hear the man acknowledge the terrible abuse he inflicted on her and other children at the school, Johnny follows Anglican Bishop George King to his office to confront him.

COMMEMORATION Florence Nightingale Nurse, Social Reformer, 1910 May 12 We remember Florence Nightingale chiefly for her work during the Crimean War, which took place between 1854 and 1856. Hearing the voice of God and animated by the spirit of service, she organized the first modern nursing service in the British field hospitals at Scutari and Balaclava. In the midst of appalling conditions she was tireless in her efforts to relieve the sufferings of wounded and dying soldiers. Her solitary vigils in the hospital wards led the popular press to call her “the Lady of the Lamp” and “the Angel of Scutari.” Within four years of her return from the Crimea, Nightingale’s health broke down, and she eventually became a house-bound invalid. But she continued to influence public policy, and her labours helped to disperse the age-old prejudice against nurses, giving their profession high respectability. Her example also helped to liberate middle-class women from their subordinate and passive role in society. By the time of her death at the age of ninety, her reputation had assumed mythical proportions, and to this day she is still honoured as the founder of the modern profession of nursing. COMMEMORATION Saint Matthias the Apostle May 15

Today we commemorate Matthias, who was chosen to take the place of Judas Iscariot in the company of the twelve apostles. We know nothing about his life and ministry beyond the first chapter of the Book of Acts. The eleven apostles wanted a twelfth to complete their number, and the lot fell to Matthias. We never find out what made him the better candidate, nor do we ever hear of him again in all the New Testament. We are left with the impression that he was important only because there needed to be twelve apostles. According to the Book of Acts, the Apostles were appointed for the sake of proclaiming Jesus to the children of Israel. “Israel” was originally the name of a person, and that person was Jacob, the grandson of Abraham. He had twelve sons, and they became the patriarchs of the twelve Hebrew tribes that Moses led out of Egypt into freedom. That was the reason for having twelve apostles. They were meant to be the twelve patriarchs of the new Israel, who would lead all Jews out of this present age into the glorious liberty of the kingdom of heaven. Matthias was chosen to fill up the ancient number of twelve and thus fulfill Israel’s heritage by helping to beget the new Israel “in the Spirit.” By honouring him today, we commit ourselves to a similar task, by enabling others to become children of the new Israel, begotten in the Spirit through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
