Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. Godly Play will take place in this area during the first part of the service. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Deeply embedded in being human is the quest to flourish, the drive to become all that we can be. From a Christian perspective, this quest is rooted in the image of God and is a reflection of our participation in the life of the Spirit. It is about choosing life and living fully in the present, ready to engage with the world around us. “Your life is shaped by the end you live for. You are made in the image of what you desire. Thomas Merton

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Isaiah. Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The Lord called me before I was born, while I was in my mother's womb he named me. He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, "You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified." But I said, "I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the Lord, and my reward with my God." And now the Lord says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honoured in the sight of the Lord, and my God has become my strength he says, "It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth." Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

I waited patiently upon the Lord; he stooped to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the mire and clay; he set my feet upon a high cliff and made my footing sure. Antiphon He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; many shall see, and stand in awe, and put their trust in the Lord. Antiphon Happy are they who trust in the Lord! they do not resort to evil spirits or turn to false gods. Great things are they that you have done, O Lord my God! how great your wonders and your plans for us! there is none who can be compared with you. Oh, that I could make them known and tell them! but they are more than I can count. Antiphon Psalm 40:1-6

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. The next day John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, "Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.' I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel." And John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God." The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following,

he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter). John 1:29-42

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES On Wed, Jan. 11, the Coming Home Society and Urban Native Youth Association hosted a community feast. More than twelve St. James’ parishioners and many others, including staff and youth, enjoyed a meal of traditional food – salmon & wild rice with local vegetables as well as bannock pudding for dessert. The feast was held to celebrate and give thanks for the Wisdom of Elders program. From youth in the program, we heard about its beneficial impact. The word “blessing” was heard reciprocally – staff member to youth, as well as youth to staff member. For many participants, this was their first opportunity to learn the language and wisdom of Aboriginal People, to participate in and learn the rituals, spiritual practices and traditional skills of their heritage. A highlight was canoeing in summer and, during the winter while canoes sleep, youth enjoyed carving their own paddles. Activities also included medicine walks, making salve, drums, medicine bags – all of which involved time with an elder, learning new skills while discovering the values and creeds of the culture for which they had no previous opportunities to learn from their own upbringing.

Doing things, acquiring traditional skills and language are all part of every person’s identity. Being a person is about the interior life. Being is knowing where you come from – your ancestors and their geographical places. It was very impressive to hear the youth and staff members introduce themselves and the location of their ancestors in the language of their people. They demonstrated powerfully the beauty of human language. Many nations were represented: Musqueam, Coast Salish, Gitxan, Anishinabe, Metis, Russian, Scottish, Maltese, Cree. To be grounded with our ancestors and place is to understand who we are.

Many of us occupy a place of privilege in society, and to our detriment, we take these matters for granted. We need again and again to remember where we came from – our families, our communities, our Creator. These young people with roots amongst the Aboriginal People, eager to learn about their culture, invite us to look freshly at our values, our people, to whom and where we belong. Their gratitude and inclusiveness promises to make all reconciliation efforts rich for all.

KIDS’ CORNER This week in the Gospel we find out that John the Baptist testifies. To testify means to be a witness, to say you honestly saw something. John had told everyone that someone greater than himself was coming: John now realized that this “someone” is Jesus, the "Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world "! After John had baptized Jesus, he told the people that he had seen the Holy Spirit come upon Jesus like a dove, and that this shows that Jesus is God’s Chosen One. Imagine seeing and hearing that! Pretty exciting indeed. When John told his friends, two of them decided to follow Jesus straightaway. Andrew, one of these two, then told his brother Simon. He followed Jesus too, and they became some of Jesus’ closest friends.

On behalf of our staff, Board of Directors, and all the youth served by Urban Native Youth Association, I am writing to express our heartfelt gratitude for your generous donations to UNYA. Your gifts of food, supplies, gift cards, and money helped us put together over 100 food hampers which were delivered this week to youth participants in our programs . The support we receive from you and other community partners is invaluable. We strongly believe that by supporting our youth today, we are strengthening our whole community, and building our future together and we thank you for joining us in this. “WISDOM OF ELDERS’’ PROGRAM CELEBRATION THANK YOU Heart-felt thanks to all who braved the cold and joined us on Wednesday night to celebrate the successful first year of the “Wisdom of Elders” program. Youth spoke very movingly about how having Elders in their lives is giving them pride in themselves and their culture that they didn’t have before. Two of the Elders shared their teachings with us, and everyone shared a delicious meal together. Your showing up, and your ongoing donations to the Coming Home Society to continue the life-changing work of the “Wisdom of Elders” program, are very real ways to engage in the work of Reconciliation. You are building relationships, and you are part of the entire ’village’ that it takes to raise First Nations youth with a sense of belonging and hope for the future. Thank you all! RECONCILIATION FEAST 2017 As part of the ongoing mandate to forge a new relationship between the Church and Aboriginal Peoples, in mid-2017 St. James’ Church will hold a Reconciliation Feast, to honour survivors of the Indian Residential Schools. In the spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action, this will be one step in seeking to live out a new and mutual relationship together. Survivors and parishioners both will be invited to sit at the table together. Two themes will be explored: First and primarily, we will honour the strength, resilience, courage, and dignity of Residential School survivors. Secondly, we will celebrate the upcoming generation of aboriginal leaders who have received their cultural heritage from generations of survivors, and whose own lives now embody and carry these traditions forward. As far as we know, the event will be the first of its kind in Canada. Our hope is that it will provide one example of what reconciliation can actually look like, for other parishes also seeking to take practical steps forward. And to that end it will be documented by video. We have applied for funding to a number of sources. The national Church’s Anglican Healing Fund has endorsed the project with a grant towards our costs. Parish members interested in volunteering for this work should contact Pat McSherry or Fr. Matthew for more information. Your financial contribution is also welcome. Cheques may be made out to “St James Church” with the words “Reconciliation Feast” on the memo line. This project is made possible through the joint efforts of St. James’ Church and the Street Outreach Initiative. Fr. Matthew

COMMEMORATION

The Confession of Saint Peter the Apostle January 18 Today we commemorate the confession of Simon Peter as told in the Gospel according to Matthew. When Jesus asked, “Who do you say that I am?” Simon spoke up and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God!” Jesus then responded: “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! It was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church.” In telling this story, the evangelist showed that every confession of Jesus as “the Christ, the Son of the living God,” is always a gift from God. It is not something that human beings can discover by their own powers, nor is it a truth obvious to anyone who looks at the historical Jesus without the help of the Holy Spirit. The natural power of sight needs to be fulfilled by God’s merciful gift of insight. Today’s feast was instituted by the Episcopal Church of the United States to complement the feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul on January twenty-fifth. Together these two feasts provide a suitable beginning and end for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which all Churches now observe at this time of year. As Paul’s conversion reminds Christians that they are united in a call to proclaim Jesus among the nations, so Peter’s confession reminds Christians that they are united in the basis of this mission, which is the inspired knowledge of Jesus Christ, “the Son of the living God.” For All the Saints: Prayers & Readings for Saints Days: ABC, 2010
