Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. Godly Play will take place in this area during the first part of the service. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. Reflection The Beatitudes [today’s Gospel reading] certainly call us, followers of Jesus, to be people who listen well, who then make informed, conscious choices for the good of All. The interesting thing about All today is our expanded understanding of who and what is included in the All. If we trust the prayer of Jesus that all may be one, and if we trust the science we know today that tells us that we are all made of star-dust - that all that is in the Universe is made of the same stuff, and if we believe that the whole of Creation is shot through with the Divine, we can’t help growing ever more inclusive in our prayer and our worldview and our actions. Since revelation is always ongoing, we are invited to reflect on our scriptures and to bring them forward into our present context. Each time we listen to the Beatitudes, we are invited to go deeper and wider in our response. As Bernard Menard says, “Matthew’s telling of the Beatitudes emphasizes a life-program.” What should be our life program today? What might be the words you would use to describe your life-program? Lately, I have been reading and rereading the Preamble to the Earth Charter [United Nations, 2000] in light of my reflection on the Beatitudes. If I were to write my Beatitudes for today, the life program I am feeling called to and that I think we are all being called to, I would borrow some of the words from the Preamble to the Charter. I would write: Blessed are those who choose to “form a global partnership to care for Earth and one another”. Blessed are those who “realize that when basic needs have been met, human development is primarily about being more, not having more”. Blessed are those who are part of an emerging “global civil society … creating new opportunities to build a democratic and humane world”. Blessed are those who know that “our environmental, economic, political, social, and spiritual challenges are interconnected, and who together [are forging] inclusive solutions”. Blessed are those who have decided “to live with a sense of universal responsibility, identifying themselves with the whole Earth community as well as our local communities”. Blessed are those “of different nations” who want to share “responsibility for the present and future well-being of the human family and the larger living world”. Blessed are those who know that “The spirit of human solidarity and kinship with all life is strengthened when we live with reverence for the mystery of being, gratitude for the gift of life, and humility regarding the human place in nature”. Blessed are those whose prayer is: “Let ours be a time remembered for the awakening of a new reverence for life, the firm resolve to achieve sustainability, the quickening of the struggle for justice and peace, and the joyful celebration of life”. 4 | HIGH MASS

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Micah. Hear what the Lord says: Rise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. Hear, you mountains, the controversy of the Lord, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for the Lord has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel. "O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me! For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of slavery; and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. O my people, remember now what King Balak of Moab devised, what Balaam son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the saving acts of the Lord." "With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?" He has told

Lord, who may dwell in your tabernacle? who may abide upon your holy hill? Whoever leads a blameless life and does what is right, who speaks the truth from his heart. Antiphon
There is no guile upon his tongue; he does no evil to his friend; he does not heap contempt upon his neighbour. In his sight the wicked is rejected, but he honours those who fear the Lord. Antiphon He has sworn to do no wrong and does not take back his word. He does not give his money in hope of gain, nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. Whoever does these things shall never be overthrown. Antiphon Psalm 15
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart." Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than HIGH MASS | 9
human strength. Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, "Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord." 1 Corinthians 1:18-31

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Mindful that other people's travel stories are sometimes less interesting than their narrator imagines, nevertheless I should like to share some impressions of my visit to Ethiopia.
Gonder; the pools for the celebration of Timkat (Epiphany and the Baptism of Christ); cave churches and the remarkable monolithic churches of Lalibela, carved underground out of the rock.
My first and overwhelming memory is that of a beautiful country with gentle and hospitable people. Mountains, plateaux, deep valleys, rock pillars rising from the plain, all create a variegated landscape. It was fairly arid where we travelled, but not desert. Rain is scarce, but there were some streams and riverbeds with a flow of water, even though many were dry, awaiting the rainy season. It was my first experience of the tropics, with sunrise at 6.30 am and (often spectacular) sunset at 6.30 pm. There was a rich variety of animal and bird life, many of the latter brilliantlycoloured and with captivating song.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is one of the most ancient Christian churches, founded in the fourth century by Bishop Frumentius, sent from Alexandria. Its theology, liturgy and practice have retained more resonances with Judaism than have ours in the West, in part from the definitive legend of the relationship between the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon. The Ark of the Covenant, with the Tablets of the Law, is held in special honour, and each church has a replica of it in the Holy of Holies. Over 50% of Ethiopia's 100 million people are Orthodox Christians, and churches are well attended. On the Feast of Timkat, large and joyful processions closed the main streets of several towns through which we wished to pass! Historically and still today relationships between Christian and Muslim are good, communities living harmoniously together: long may this continue, and be an example to the wider world of "a more excellent way."
Ethiopia is one of the few African countries to have escaped European colonisation, although it experienced Italian occupation immediately prior to World War 2. It has a proud and fascinating history, with extraordinary buildings and artefacts from different epochs: the palaces and stelae at Axum; round monastic churches with colourful iconography on the walls; the royal palaces within the citadel at

Outside urban areas, subsistence farming is the way of life. We were privileged to be welcomed into the home of a Tigraian farmer and his family. Through better management, hard work, and with some foreign aid, the devastating famines of some decades ago have been avoided, but it is a basic standard of living. The staple diet is injera, a soft flatbread made from an indigenous grain, teff. More could - and may! - be said.
