The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. A reading from the Letter to the Ephesians. This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles for surely you have already heard of the commission of God's grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God's grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. Please note below: THE PROCLAMATION OF THE DATE OF EASTER | traditionally made on the Feast of the Epiphany
Dear brothers and sisters, the glory of the Lord has shone upon us, and shall ever be manifest among us, until the day of his return. Through the rhythms of times and seasons let us celebrate the mysteries of salvation. Let us recall the year’s culmination, the Easter Triduum of the Lord: his last supper, his crucifixion, his burial, and his rising celebrated between the evening of the twenty-ninth of March and the evening of the thirty-first of March. Each Easter—as on each Sunday— the Holy Church makes present the great and saving deed by which Christ has for ever conquered sin and death. From Easter are reckoned all the days we keep holy. Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, will occur on the fourteenth of February. The Ascension of the Lord will be commemorated on the tenth of May. Pentecost, the joyful conclusion of the season of Easter, will be celebrated on the twentieth of May. And this year the First Sunday of Advent will be on the second of December. Likewise the pilgrim Church proclaims the Passover of Christ in the feasts of the holy Mother of God, in the feasts of the Apostles and Saints, and in the commemoration of the faithful departed.
To Jesus Christ, who was, who is, and who is to come, Lord of time and history, be endless praise, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY At Epiphany the Church celebrates the revelation of Christ's glory to the nations, represented in the Magi who travelled from distant lands in search of the Christ-child. It is noteworthy that it is Matthew's Gospel, written for a community of Jewish converts to Christianity, which presents this section of the Birth narrative: to highlight from the very beginning of the Gospel that this Good News is not exclusively for the covenant-people of Israel, but for all nations and peoples. It is interesting to note too that the Magi were prompted to set out on their journey by signs discerned within their own culture and experience.

We are blessed at St. James' in the diversity represented in our congregation and in the multicultural community in which we are set. There are lessons here for the Church today in our desire to share the Gospel, the Good News, and to reflect the light and love of Christ in the diverse cultures in which we are set. There has sometimes been an arrogance and condescension in missionary work, which has failed to recognise and respect the worth of different societies: our Anglican Church of Canada has apologised for errors in this regard to First Nations' peoples, and the

OUR PARISH R.I.P. Canon Douglas Williams’ funeral will take place in Christ Church Cathedral at 11 am on Sat. Jan 13. Members of St James’ are particularly encouraged to attend to mark Fr Douglas’ valued ministry amongst us these past several years. We extend our sympathy, love and prayers to Helen and all his family, and we pray that Fr Douglas may rest in peace and rise in glory.

MOTHERS’ UNION The Mothers’ Union will be meeting next Wed. Jan. 10, at 7:00 pm in the Bishops’ Room. SILENT PRAYER Sun. Jan. 14 at 4 pm Time of Silent Prayer in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, followed by Evening Prayer at 5 pm. NO MASS There will be no Mass on Tuesday 16 or Thursday 18 January, as the clergy will be in retreat. Monday 15, Wednesday 17 & Friday 19 noon Masses as usual. ORDER OF THE DIOCESE Fr. Kevin will be glad to receive names of members of St. James’ for possible nomination for the ODNW in 2018. Please submit names, with a brief supporting statement, to fr.kevin@stjames.bc.ca or the office by Feb. 14. The parish is entitled to make one nomination. PARISH COUNCIL & SPECIAL VESTRY Sat. Jan. 27, 10:15 am (coffee from 10 am) The first part of the meeting will be a Special Vestry to consider the 2018 Budget; Parish Council will follow. Please submit items for discussion at the Council to the Secretary, Reece Wrightman, via the parish office. EVE OF CANDLEMAS There will be High Mass, 6.30 pm on Thurs. Feb. 1. The service will begin with the dedication of the new floodlighting on the tower, followed by the Candlemas procession into the church. There will be a reception afterwards.
RELATIONSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING: FILM & DINNER Tues. Jan. 16 at 6:30 pm in the Bishops’ Room. Everyone is welcome. A sign-up sheet is available in the Narthex. We need to know numbers for catering the dinner. Discussion will be facilitated by Rev. Laurel Dykstra, Salal & Cedar Ministry. The dinner & the film are free. It is also a fundraiser for Salal & Cedar Ministry. We are holding an on-line silent auction of Indigenous art pieces that have been donated by Kelvin Bee and others. The art pieces will be on display during the film and dinner event.
MVA EVENTS All members of St. James’ Church are members of the Metro Vancouver Alliance (MVA) and thus invited to participate in MVA activities. At coffee hour after High Mass today, Justin Berger and Pat McSherry will tell you about MVA Events in January and February 2018 and how you can participate.
