High Mass
Fourth Sunday in Lent | March 10, 2013 | 10:30 am
Welcome Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES •To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; • To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God.

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection The Fourth Sunday of Lent sees a relaxing of the Lenten observances, signified by the rose-pink vestments worn by the clergy. As on the third Sunday of Advent, the penitential purple is lightened to the lesser shade, and flowers are placed on the altar. The flowers on St. James’ High Altar today are dedicated by the Mothers’ Union to their deceased members. Mothers’ Union members will also be handing out flowers to mothers and carers at the end of the service. This day is known as Laetare Sunday from the Introit “Rejoice ye with Jerusalem” taken from Isaiah 66: 10 – Laetare Jerusalem: O be joyful, Jerusalem. The traditional Epistle for the day, Galatians 4:26, calls Jerusalem “the mother of us all,” which may have led to this Sunday also being known as Mothering Sunday. In some parts of England, parishioners make a special visit to their mothers on this day, or visit their “mother church” or diocesan cathedral. The tradition of relaxing Lenten discipline and honouring and visiting mothers has led to yet another name: Refreshment Sunday. The BCP Gospel reading of the feeding of the five thousand (John 6:1-14) certainly leads some weight to the duty of hospitality owed to one’s visiting guests, and so one more tradition has arisen, which is the baking and sharing of simnel cakes. Simnel cakes have been made since medieval times in England, baked by young girls in service and taken home on Mothering Sunday. The traditional recipe is for a light fruit cake, covered with marzipan and with an added layer of almond paste inside. Some are decorated with eleven balls of marzipan on top, signifying the Apostles, with Judas being left off. Today as you leave the church, you will be offered a piece of simnel cake made by the Mothers’ Union members. References from the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, 1997

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Joshua. The Lord said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away from you the disgrace of Egypt." And so that place is called Gilgal to this day. While the Israelites were camped in Gilgal they kept the passover in the evening on the fourteenth day of the month in the plains of Jericho. On the day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. The manna ceased on the day they ate the produce of the land, and the Israelites no longer had manna; they ate the crops of the land of Canaan that year. Joshua 5:9-12

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. From now on, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, HIGH MASS | 7
everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:16-21

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to Jesus. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, "This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them." So he told them this parable: "There was a man who had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.' So he divided his property between them. A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and travelled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living. When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. He would gladly have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands."' So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. Then the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his slaves, 'Quickly, bring out a robe - the best one - and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!' And they began to celebrate. Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. He called one of the slaves and asked what was going on. He replied, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has got him back safe and sound.' Then he became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him. HIGH MASS | 9
But he answered his father, 'Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him! 'Then the father said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found.'" Luke 15:1-3, 11B-32

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Soteriology: The section of Christian theology which treats of the saving work of Christ for the world. It includes not only the doctrines of the Atonement and of Grace, but also (1) the doctrine of human nature as affected by the Fall and by sin, which is the presupposition of Christ’s work, and (2) the doctrine of man’s final destiny as the result of that work. Born July 16, 1962, he attended Alert Bay Residential from the winter of 1966 to the summer of 1976. “The Department of Indian Affairs and RCMP came and pushed my parent’s door open. My mom told me in our language to hide and I went behind the wood stove. All the four and a
half year olds had to go. I remember everything that happened like it was yesterday: the weather, the road to the Alert Bay school...When the apology and claims process started years ago, I didn’t want anything to do with the people from the churches. I decided to go through with it in order to help provide my children and grandchildren with a better future.” Come and hear his story and share your own thoughts and feelings with others in a safe environment. Check out the resource materials available about the Church and Residential Schools on a table display outside the Bishops’ Room. REFUGEE SPONSORSHIP St James' Outreach Committee is currently assisting with the sponsorship of a refugee family from Iraq, together with St Mary's Anglican Church, in Halifax. This elderly couple fled from their homeland to Syria, where they were registered with the UNHCR, and subsequently selected to come to Canada through the private sponsorship scheme organized by the Primate's World Relief and Development Fund. Unfortunately the outbreak of civil war in Syria led to the withdrawal of Canada's diplomatic representatives in Damascus, including the Visa Office, which deals with refugee affairs. This has now been relocated to Amman, Jordan. Contact with the refugee camps in Syria is consequently all the more difficult. Because of this disruption, the time for this couple's medical examinations and chest X-rays had expired, and they have had to be done again. This happened in late November, but the results had to be sent to Paris for verification. We have had no further news as to when this couple may be allowed to travel to Canada. Their daughter, who has already arrived in Halifax, is naturally extremely anxious. Your prayers are asked for this family. John Conway, Chair

NEWS FROM GENERAL SYNOD Join our push for affordable housing Ali Symons, General Synod Senior Editor. Housing continues to be a joint priority for Anglicans and Lutherans as they support Bill C400, a private member's bill calling on the government to develop a national housing strategy. Anglican and Lutheran staff leaders engaged in this issue invite local church members to connect with MPs about the bill before it goes before Parliament, Feb. 13. An estimated 400,000 Canadians do not have healthy homes. The UN Special Report on Adequate Housing has observed that "Canada is one of the few countries in the world without a national housing strategy." Bill C-400 recognizes housing as a human right. It would commit the government to work with nonprofits, the private sector, Aboriginal communities, and all levels of government in developing a national housing strategy. With set timelines and goals, the strategy would then address the root causes of homelessness and set a plan to provide housing for all. Church members are encouraged to write to or meet with their MPs about Bill C-400 as soon as possible. Resources are available through Dignity for All, a campaign co-founded by
long-time ecumenical partner Citizens for Public Justice. http://dignityforall.ca. This advocacy push is one example of housing work Christians do on a daily basis across Canada. In Victoria, Evangelical Lutheran churches network with other non-profits to ensure adequate housing for all levels of poverty: those who live on government subsidies, the working poor, and the lower middle class. In Winnipeg, St. Matthew's Anglican Church is converting its property to 25 units of affordable housing for limited income families, a neighbourhood resource centre, and a dedicated worship space. Many more examples exist across the country, including at a regional level. On a national level, the Anglican Church of Canada and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada are developing a shared resolution on housing and homelessness to be presented at Joint Assembly, to be held July 2013 in Ottawa. The resolution will commit both churches to continued local action and government advocacy.
