Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Give instead of demanding, trust others instead of compelling their trust, serve instead of being served, bless instead of cursing. And be sure that when you have done all things well you will still be an unprofitable servant. So be attentive to the others, not in order to dominate or exploit them but to work for their happiness discreetly and effectively and to build them up in all the riches of faith and love. And you, accept from your brother or sister the help you need. Be thankful for the variety of gifts and differences of personality. When you put your own potential and insights at the service of your brothers and sisters your unity will grow stronger and richer, and together you will create that spaciousness which finds room for everyone. Pluriformity is not the end but the means to make unity more powerful and the individual bear more fruit. -from ‘Rule for a New Brother’, Benedictine Priory ‘Regina Pacis’, Great Britain: Anchor Press, 1973.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Second Book of Samuel. The king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, "Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom." And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders concerning Absalom. So the army went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim. The men of Israel were defeated there by the servants of David, and the slaughter there was great on that day, twenty thousand men. The battle spread over the face of all the country; and the forest claimed more victims that day than the sword. Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak. His head caught fast in the oak, and he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him went on. And ten young men, Joab's armour-bearers, surrounded Absalom and struck him, and killed him. Then the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, "Good tidings for my lord the king! For the Lord has vindicated you this

Cushite, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" The Cushite answered, "May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up to do you harm, be like that young man." The king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, he said, "O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!" 2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, 31-33

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice; let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication. If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand? For there is forgiveness with you; therefore you shall be feared. Antiphon I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; in his word is my hope. My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. Antiphon Psalm 130:1-5

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians. So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbours, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil. Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labour and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the HIGH MASS | 9

day of redemption. Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 4:25-5:2

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said to the people, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." They were saying, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" Jesus answered them, "Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY A conversation between three of us after Mass on Thursday, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord but also the 70th Anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, prompted me to reflect again on the perennial question of the juxtaposition of the potential for good and evil.

So we see around us potential for good, the divine breaking through, and for evil: in the beauty and wonder of creation, over against our lack of stewardship and our capacity to mar and disfigure; in the searching and aspirations of the human mind, for good or ill; love and hatred in human relationships, In the Transfiguration of Jesus we one to one, community, ethnic. I see the intensity, the brilliance, of have been moved by the beauty of the divine presence, our humanity mutual care and compassion shot through with divine glory. As offered one to another here the disciples and we are given this amidst the squalor, deprivation glimpse of who and how Jesus is, so and limitations of the Downtown we have a sense of who and how Eastside. For Christians of course we shall be: St John in his first we see the divine breaking letter writes, "We do not know through above all in our worship, what we shall be, but we know that the simple bread and wine of the we shall be like him because we Eucharist shot through with the shall see him as he is." In the presence of Christ. Gospels, the Transfiguration is a turning point, the prelude to the Let's keep our eyes open to catch Passion, Death and Resurrection. It a glimpse of this divine glory gives Jesus and the apostles, breaking in, to encourage and including our own St James, strengthen us to continue working strength and encouragement to for the coming of God's Kingdom persevere, to go up to Jerusalem. here on earth as it is in heaven. In the intense heat and light of the explosion at Hiroshima we see a Fr. Kevin defining instant of the human capacity for inhumanity to fellow men and women: 140,000 dead instantaneously, thousands of others made to endure a lingering and painful death.

KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. "This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” John 6:50-51 (NRSV) For thousands of years bread has been one of the most important parts of our diet. Bread comes in all shapes, sizes, and flavors. Bread is often baked into loaves, muffins, bread sticks, buns, bagels, and flat breads like tortillas. We love to spread things on our bread — things like butter, jam, honey, creamed cheese, and peanut butter. Most of us probably eat bread in some form every day. What is your favorite kind of bread? What is your favorite way to eat bread? As far back as Bible times, bread was very important to life. You may remember the time when the Israelites were starving in the desert. Every morning God sent bread from heaven for the people to eat: it was called ‘manna’. I'm sure you also remember the time when Jesus fed a crowd of 5000 people with just five loaves of bread and two small fish. Do you remember when Jesus taught his disciples to pray? He taught them to say, "Give us this day our daily bread." Yes, bread is, and always has been, a very important part of life. Bread tastes very good, and when we are hungry, eating bread is a good way to satisfy our hunger. But guess what? Tomorrow we will be hungry again! What if there was a bread that we could eat and not be hungry again? Wouldn't that be great? Bread can provide vitamins and minerals to help us grow strong and healthy, but eating bread won't help us live forever. Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was bread which, if we ate it, we would live forever?

26 | THE THURIBLE 18 28

Well, there is! Let's call it heavenly bread. It is bread that came from heaven. After Jesus fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread and two small fish, many people followed him. The only problem was, they followed Jesus, not because of his teaching, they followed him because he fed them. Jesus said, "You come looking for me because you ate the loaves and had your fill." Then Jesus told them, "The bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever." In the Mass Jesus comes to us as the heavenly bread that satisfies our hunger. He is the heavenly bread that gives us eternal life. Eat the bread that came down from heaven. Eat and live. Our Father, we thank you that in the Mass we may feed on Jesus, the living bread, that we might have eternal life. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

COMMEMORATION St. Dominic Priest, Founder of the Order of Preachers, 1221 August 8 Dominic was a Spanish priest who, early in the thirteenth century, founded the Order of Preachers — a brotherhood whose entire vocation is to preach and instruct the faithful in the doctrines of the Church. Dominic’s own vocation as a preacher began in 1206, when he was passing through southern France with his bishop. He noticed how the people flocked to the Cathars, who combined a life of radical simplicity with strange, non-Christian beliefs. Dominic realized that the people could not be brought back to the Church so long as bishops and priests made the rights of the institution their primary concern. So he adopted a life modelled on today’s gospel: he renounced all property except for the robe on his back and travelled up and down the countryside, preaching to strangers on the road and to crowds in the market-places. Dominic convinced many others to join him in his enterprise of faith, and together they developed a movement which not only countered heresy in France but also spread out and renewed the teaching of the faith throughout southern Europe. Dominic himself was a quiet person who preferred to live with his fellow-preachers in poverty, rather than accept any of the honours pressed upon him. As an early account of his life says: “He rarely spoke unless it was with God in prayer, or about God for the instruction of those who travelled with him.” He specially desired the gift of love, so that he might always care for others in their need for salvation. In his later years he began to develop a rule for his followers, to ensure that their unique vocation would continue in the Church. His new brotherhood was called the Order of Preachers and its members came to be known as “Dominicans” in his honour. Dominic himself died in 1221, still on the road preaching, but the Dominicans carried on his work and became a major force in theological education — as they still are to this day. COMMEMORATION St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross Patron of Europe, Martyr, 1942 August 11 A brilliant philosopher who stopped believing in God when she was 14, Edith Stein was so captivated by reading the autobiography of Teresa of Avila that she began a spiritual journey that led to her Baptism in 1922. Twelve years later she imitated Teresa by becoming a Carmelite, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Born into a prominent Jewish family in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland), Edith abandoned Judaism in her teens. As a student at the University of Göttingen, she became fascinated by phenomenology, an approach to philosophy. Excelling as a protégé of Edmund Husserl, one of the leading phenomenologists, Edith earned a doctorate in philosophy in 1916. She continued as a university teacher until 1922 when she moved to a Dominican school in Speyer; her appointment as lecturer at the Educational Institute of Munich ended under pressure from the Nazis. After living in the Cologne Carmel (1934-38), she moved to the Carmelite monastery in Echt, Netherlands. The Nazis occupied that country in 1940. In retaliation for being denounced by the Dutch bishops, the Nazis arrested all Dutch Jews who had become Christians. Teresa Benedicta and her sister Rosa, also a Catholic, died in a gas chamber in Auschwitz on August 9, 1942. http://www.americancatholic.org/Features/Saints/saint.aspx?id=1102
