Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection “In mindfulness one is not only restful and happy, but alert and awake. Meditation is evasion; it is a serene encounter with reality.”

not

― Thich Nhat Hanh, The Miracle of Mindfulness: An Introduction to the Practice of Meditation

“If while washing dishes, we think only of the cup of tea that awaits us, thus hurrying to get the dishes out of the way as if they were a nuisance, then we are not "washing the dishes to wash the dishes." What's more, we are not alive during the time we are washing the dishes. In fact we are completely incapable of realizing the miracle of life while standing at the sink. If we can't wash the dishes, the chances are we won't be able to drink our tea either. While drinking the cup of tea, we will only be thinking of other things, barely aware of the cup in our hands. Thus we are sucked away into the future -and we are incapable of actually living one minute of life.” ― Thich Nhat Hanh, The Miracle of Mindfulness

Entrance Rite PRELUDE Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier (BWV 731) — J. S. Bach

At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand.

HYMN 1 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee: holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though our sinful human gaze thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea; holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Jeremiah. O Lord, you know; remember me and visit me, and bring down retribution for me on my persecutors. In your forbearance do not take me away; know that on your account I suffer insult. Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts. I did not sit in the company of merrymakers, nor did I rejoice; under the weight of your hand I sat alone, for you had filled me with indignation. Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Truly, you are to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail. Therefore, thus says the Lord: If you turn back, I will take you back, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall serve as my mouth. It is they who will turn to you, not you who will turn to them. And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, says the Lord. I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless. Jeremiah 15:15-21

Reader Alll

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Give judgment for me, O Lord, for I have lived with integrity; I have trusted in the Lord and have not faltered. Test me, O Lord, and try me; examine my heart and my mind. Antiphon For your love is before my eyes; I have walked faithfully with you. I have not sat with the worthless, nor do I consort with the deceitful. I have hated the company of evildoers; I will not sit down with the wicked. Antiphon HIGH MASS | 9

I will wash my hands in innocence, O Lord, that I may go in procession round your altar, Singing aloud a song of thanksgiving and recounting all your wonderful deeds. Lord, I love the house in which you dwell and the place where your glory abides. Antiphon Psalm 26:1-8

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’ No, ‘if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12: 9-21

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you." But he turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things." Then Jesus told his disciples, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done. Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom." Matthew 16:21-28

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice like mountains high soaring above thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. To all life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, then wither and perish, but nought changeth thee. All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. I thank thee, uncreated Sun, that thy bright beams on me have shined; I thank thee, who hast overthrown my foes, and healed my wounded mind; I thank thee, whose enlivening voice bids my freed heart in thee rejoice. Uphold me in the doubtful race, nor suffer me again to stray; strengthen my feet, with steady pace still to press forward in thy way; that all my powers, with all their might, in thy sole glory may unite. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY What a gift it is to have a long weekend and an extra day to spend with our families and friends this coming Monday. With such fast paced lives, with technology and production ever more becoming the focus in our work, stat holidays like Labour Day become quite sacred. If something is sacred it is considered to be holy or blessed. In the day to day life of our church we celebrate the Mass, something we consider to be most holy in our tradition where we seek to live “a Christ centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.” To lead a sacramental life “literally means to keep the sacred (sacra) in mind (mental). In other words to seek mindfulness – a mind full – of God’s presence.” An extra day free from the demands of our work gives us the opportunity to find time to centre ourselves, clear our minds and focus on being mindful of God’s presence in our lives. Where have you seen God at work recently? There are few of us who experience a burning bush type experience where God reveals

28 | HIGH MASS

Godself in a bold and unmistakeable way, but ask yourself, if God did appear to us in such a way today, are we mindful enough that we would notice? Do we recognize holy ground when we find ourselves upon it? Where do we find it in daily life? Last Sunday, Fr. Kevin challenged us to spend some time considering how we would answer Jesus if He put us on the spot and asked us: “Who do you say that I am?” In wrestling with questions like these I believe we step onto holy ground. I hope you have been able to find the time to sit with this question this week, and if not, I hope that the gift of this Monday will give you the time to mindfully dwell in God’s presence and consider your answer, so that when someone asks you why you go to church, or what you believe you will be able to answer in your own words not only the person asking the question, but Jesus as well. Juanita has a life-time love of choral & sacred music and is an enthusiastic member of St. John's "choir to go" (recently touring the Nicola Valley!) Juanita loves being out in nature (gardening, hiking in the west-coast forest, snowshoeing on Cypress Mountain); travelling in the UK and Europe (and anything Italian!). Juanita is currently employed as a Litigation Project Manager with Indigenous & Northern Affairs Canada. She has a Diploma in Human Resource Management (BCIT); a Certificate in Communications & Negotiations (Sauder School of Business) and in Conflict Resolution (Justice Institute of BC).

Juanita Clark recently became a Postulant with the Diaconate of New Westminster and is delighted to be embarking on a nine month Internship with the parish of St. James. Juanita is a cradle Anglican. For the past 8 years she has worshiped with St John's (North Vancouver) which she describes as: a pivotal destination on her faith journey: "a place where I grew, immensely, in my personal awareness as a Christian and in my relationship with Christ". Juanita is grateful for the many opportunities St John's has given her to discern her Calling and to grow in faith. Juanita's participation in Christian Meditation, Silent Retreats and Contemplative prayer practice has taught her to hear with the ears of her heart and to clarify God¹s will for her life. This experience led to her involvement in the Education for Ministry program, acting as St. John's Liturgical Assistant, writing Intercessory prayers and delivering monthly sermons. She has also been a committed volunteer with St. John's outreach programs including: pastoral care; working with seniors; and Christian education.

Juanita is currently at Seminary at VST to complete a Certificate of Theological studies and, God willing, will be ordained as a Vocational Deacon in June of 2018. Juanita will begin her internship with us on Sunday, September 17.
