If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection RECONCILIATION PRAYER Lord God, bring us together as one, reconciled with you and reconciled with each other. You made us in your likeness, you gave us your Son Jesus Christ. He has given us forgiveness from sin. Lord God, bring us together as one, different in culture, but given new life in Jesus Christ, together as your body, your Church, your people. Lord God, bring us together as one, reconciled, healed, forgiven, sharing you with others as you have called us to do. In Jesus Christ, let us be together as one. Amen. https://www.abmission.org/pages/prayers-for-reconciliation.html Accessed September 5, 2017.

Entrance Rite PRELUDE At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand. HYMN
349 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — All People That on Earth Do Dwell All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; him serve with mirth, his praise forth tell; come ye before him, and rejoice. Know that the Lord is God indeed; without our aid he did us make; we are his folk, he doth us feed, and for his sheep he doth us take. O enter then his gates with praise, approach with joy his courts unto; praise, laud, and bless his name always, for it is seemly so to do.
For why, the Lord our God is good; his mercy is forever sure; his truth at all times firmly stood, and shall from age to age endure.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Ezekiel. So you, mortal, I have made a sentinel for the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. If I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked ones, you shall surely die’, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from their ways, the wicked shall die in their iniquity, but their blood I will require at your hand. But if you warn the wicked to turn from their ways, and they do not turn from their ways, the wicked shall die in their iniquity, but you will have saved your life. Now you, mortal, say to the house of Israel, Thus you have said: ‘Our transgressions and our sins weigh upon us, and we waste away because of them; how then can we live?’ Say to them, As I live, says the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from their ways and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways; for why will you die, O house of Israel? Ezekiel 33:7-11

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes, and I shall keep it to the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep your law; I shall keep it with all my heart. Make me go in the path of your commandments, for that is my desire. Antiphon Incline my heart to your decrees and not to unjust gain. Turn my eyes from watching what is worthless; give me life in your ways. Antiphon Fulfill your promise to your servant, which you make to those who fear you. Turn away the reproach which I dread, because your judgments are good. Behold, I long for your commandments; in your righteousness preserve my life. Antiphon Psalm 119:33-40 HIGH MASS | 9
EPISTLE READING Reader
A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans. Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet"; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, "Love your neighbour as yourself." Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. Romans 13:8-14

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, "If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them." All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” +

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Juanita is a cradle Anglican. For the past eight years she has worshiped with St John's (North Vancouver) which she describes as a pivotal destination on her faith journey: "a place where I grew, immensely, in my personal awareness as a Christian and in my relationship with Christ". Juanita is grateful for the many opportunities St John's has given her to discern her Calling and to grow in faith. Juanita's participation in Christian Meditation, Silent Retreats and Contemplative prayer practice has taught her to hear with the ears of her heart and to clarify God¹s will for her life. This experience led to her involvement in the Education for Ministry program, acting as St. John's Liturgical Assistant, writing Intercessory prayers and delivering monthly sermons. She has also been a committed volunteer with St. John's outreach programs including: pastoral care; working with seniors; and Christian education. Juanita has a lifetime love of choral & sacred music and is an enthusiastic member of St. John's "choir to go" (recently touring the Nicola Valley!) Juanita loves being out in nature (gardening, hiking in the west-coast forest, snowshoeing on Cypress Mountain); travelling in the UK and Europe (and anything Italian!). Juanita is currently employed as a Litigation Project Manager with Indigenous & Northern Affairs Canada. She has a Diploma in Human Resource Management (BCIT); a Certificate in
Communications & Negotiations (Sauder School of Business) and in Conflict Resolution (Justice Institute of BC). Juanita is currently at Seminary at VST to complete a Certificate of Theological studies and, God willing, will be ordained as a Vocational Deacon in June of 2018. Juanita will begin her internship with us today. COFFEE HOUR Our social time together on a Sunday morning after both Masses is a wonderful time of connection, sharing stories, catch ups and laughter. I am grateful to all of you who have engaged in the ministry of hospitality that makes these gatherings possible. We need more of you! Our Hospitality Ministry needs you! Can you arrive around 9:00am to get the Low Mass coffee going? Can you stay after High Mass and host the coffee hour? Perhaps you can host for the folks at the Mass you don’t usually attend!? This is a vital ministry for our community and you can join the rota, by speaking to Pat McSherry or Mother Lucy directly. Can’t find us on Sunday? Contact the office: office@stames.bc.ca or 604685-2532 CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS A long-standing tradition of Anglican churches is the rôle of Choral Scholar – a university student who receives a scholarship in exchange for singing in the choir. The programme adds voices to our choir, improving the tone, and balance – and also offers students a marvellous opportunity to gain experience singing some of the finest choral works and learning a wide range of church music. Additionally, the benefits of this programme continue throughout the year, as also over the summer months the music ministry is supported by our Choral Scholars. Based on the success over the past year, the Trustees have agreed to support the Choral Scholarship programme for another season starting in September in a fund-matching model. A number of generous donations have already been received from individual parishioners, and we ar THE THURIBLE | 19 21
