A Reflection Two Sonnets for Corpus Christi Malcolm Guite writes, “I am offering here a couple of sonnets about the experience of receiving Holy Communion, each from a slightly different angle.” 1. Love’s Choice This bread is light, dissolving, almost air, A little visitation on my tongue, A wafer-thin sensation, hardly there. This taste of wine is brief in flavour, flung A moment to the palate’s roof and fled, Even its aftertaste a memory. Yet this is how He comes. Through wine and bread Love chooses to be emptied into me. He does not come in unimagined light Too bright to be denied, too absolute For consciousness, too strong for sight, Leaving the seer blind, the poet mute; Chooses instead to seep into each sense, To dye himself into experience. 2. Hide and seek

Ready or not, you tell me, here I come! And so I know I’m hiding, and I know My hiding-place is useless. You will come And find me. You are searching high and low. Today I’m hiding low, down here, below, Below the sunlit surface others see. Oh find me quickly, quickly come to me. And here you come and here I come to you. I come to you because you come to me. You know my hiding places. I know you, I reach you through your hiding-places too; Touching the slender thread, but now I see – Even in darkness I can see you shine, Risen in bread, and revelling in wine. https://malcolmguite.wordpress.com/2012/06/06/two-sonnets-for-corpus-christi/ 4 | HIGH MASS

HYMN 385 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Worship the Lord Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; bow down before him, his glory proclaim; gold of obedience and incense of lowliness bring, and adore him: the Lord is his name. Low at his feet lay thy burden of carefulness, high on his heart he will bear it for thee, comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness, guiding thy steps as may best for thee be. Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness of the poor wealth thou canst reckon as thine; truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness, these are the offerings to lay on his shrine. These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness, he will accept for the name that is dear; mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, trust for our trembling, and hope for our fear. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; bow down before him, his glory proclaim; gold of obedience and incense of lowliness bring, and adore him; the Lord is his name!

The Liturgy of the Word COMMENTARY 2 OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Isaiah. Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him—and the gates shall not be closed: I will go before you and level the mountains, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I surname you, though you do not know me. I am the Lord, and there is no other; besides me there is no god. I arm you, though you do not know me, so that they may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is no one besides me; I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe; I the Lord do all these things. Isaiah 45:1-7

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the whole earth. Sing to the Lord and bless his Name; proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations and his wonders among all peoples. Antiphon For great is the Lord and greatly go be praised; he is more to be feared than all gods. As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; but it is the Lord who made the heavens. Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! Oh, the power and splendour of his sanctuary! EPISTLE READING

Reader

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians. Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labour of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers and sisters beloved by God, that he has chosen you, because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of people we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place where your faith in God has become known, so that we have no need to speak about it. For the people of those regions report about us what kind of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming. 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10

HOLY GOSPEL Celebrant People People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap Jesus in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?" But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax." And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, "Whose head is this, and whose title?" They answered, "The emperor's." Then he said to them, "Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's." When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away. Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing; true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o'er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY The foundation of our Christian life is the worship and praise of almighty God, expressed in public and private prayer, and by lives lived in loving self-giving and service after the example of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the response we are invited to make to the ever-generous love of God which we see in the work of creation at the beginning, and then in the recreation of all things in the self-giving life, death and resurrection of this Lord Jesus Christ. The First Letter of John reminds us that “God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us . . .Beloved, since God loved us so much, we ought also to love one another.” (1 John 4.9-11) At the High Mass this Sunday we shall be reminded how the Eucharist is at the centre of this life of worship and service. We shall give praise to the Creator for all the gifts of life, and for the self-giving love of Christ revealed supremely on the Cross, and now given anew in and for us in this sacrament of his body and blood. We shall pray for the church and the world, the

sick and the needy, all those who have gone before us. We shall bring sorrow and penitence for our sins, our lack of thankfulness and our misuse of the gifts of creation, and receive forgiveness. Then as Christ offered himself to the Father “once, only once, and once for all,” so together with the bread and the wine, fruits of creation, we offer “ourselves, our souls and bodies” in union with his perfect sacrifice. At his Last Supper with his friends Christ took the bread, blessed and broke it, then gave it to them as his body, shortly before that very body was taken and broken on the cross. So now, if we will, we are to be taken, blessed, broken free from all that hinders our loving, and given as Christ’s body today, the church, to be signs of his life and his love in his world. Christ feeds us with his very self, his body and his blood, to join us together and to strengthen us, and then sends us out to live in the world to God’s praise and glory. Fr Kevin
