A Reflection GABRIEL’S ANNUNCIATION For a moment I hesitated on the threshold. For the space of a breath I paused, unwilling to disturb her last ordinary moment, knowing that the next step would cleave her life: that this day would slice her story in two, dividing all the days before from all the ones to come. The artists would later depict the scene: Mary dazzled by the archangel, her head bowed in humble assent, awed by the messenger who condescended to leave paradise to bestow such an honor upon a woman, and mortal. Yet I tell you it was I who was dazzled, I who found myself agape when I came upon her— reading, at the loom, in the kitchen, I cannot now recall; only that the woman before me— blessed and full of grace long before I called her so— shimmered with how completely she inhabited herself, inhabited the space around her, inhabited the moment that hung between us.
4 | INTRODUCTION
I wanted to save her from what I had been sent to say.
Yet when the time came, when I had stammered the invitation (history would not record the sweat on my brow, the pounding of my heart; would not note that I said Do not be afraid to myself as much as to her) it was she who saved me— her first deliverance— her Let it be not just declaration to the Divine but a word of solace, of soothing, of benediction for the angel in the doorway who would hesitate one last time— just for the space of a breath torn from his chest— before wrenching himself away from her radiant consent, her beautiful and awful yes. —Jan Richardson Accessed May 30th http:// adventdoor.com/2014/12/19/advent-4-gabrieland-mary/

Entrance Rite PRELUDE Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele (BWV 654) — J. S. Bach At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand.
HYMN 349 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — All People That on Earth Do Dwell All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; him serve with mirth, his praise forth tell; come ye before him, and rejoice. Know that the Lord is God indeed; without our aid he did us make; we are his folk, he doth us feed, and for his sheep he doth us take. O enter then his gates with praise, approach with joy his courts unto; praise, laud, and bless his name always, for it is seemly so to do. For why, the Lord our God is good; his mercy is forever sure; his truth at all times firmly stood, and shall from age to age endure.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy. Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labour and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work you, or your son or your daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or your donkey, or any of your livestock, or the resident alien in your towns, so that your male and female slave may rest as well as you. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day. Raise a song and sound the timbrel, the merry harp, and the lyre. Blow the ram's-horn at the new moon, and at the full moon, the day of our feast. I heard an unfamiliar voice saying "I eased his shoulder from the burden; his hands were set free from bearing the load." You called on me in trouble, and I saved you; I answered you from the secret place of thunder and tested you at the waters of Meribah. Antiphon Hear, O my people, and I will admonish you: O Israel, if you would but listen to me! There shall be no strange god among you; you shall not worship a foreign god. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and said, "Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it." Antiphon Psalm 81:1-10
EPISTLE READING Reader
A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. We do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus' sake. For it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. 2 Corinthians 4:5-12

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon Allll Deacon Allll
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. One sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?" And he said to them, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions." Then he said to them, "The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath." Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man who had the withered hand, "Come forward." Then he said to them, "Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to kill?" But they were silent. He looked around at them with anger; he was grieved at their hardness of heart and said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him. Mark 2:23 - 3:6

525 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — The Church’s One Foundation The church's one Foundation is Jesus Christ our Lord; we are his new creation, by water and the word; from heaven he came and sought us to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. Elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth, her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth; one glorious name we hallow, partake one holy food, and to one hope we follow, with every grace endued.

Though with dismay and wonder, we see the church oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, "How long?" And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. 'Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of our war, we wait the consummation of peace for evermore; till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blessed, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest. Yet we on earth have union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with Thee.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Being a Christian in a modern world can be lonely at times, which seems like the opposite to what being a Christian should feel like when you remember that we are a communal faith, baptised into the body of Jesus. Last week, I was standing on the corner or Gore and Powell having just crossed the road with one of the newcomers to St. James’. New to us and new to the neighbourhood. I was delighted as she greeted a friend from our downtown eastside community with a hug and was invited to a meal. This same person greeted me, we had not seen each other since the Easter Vigil. Scott the security guy at the Sunrise Market appeared and said hello, and as that happened, Porter from Storm Brewing on Commercial Drive drove past and yelled, “Hiya Mother Lucy” out of his window with a big grin. At that moment I felt like I was in exactly the right place and it was as though God was a whirlwind of faces and joyfulness in the shared connectedness of our community. Perhaps you’ve had moments like this. Perhaps you have moments
where you feel alone in your faith. What is our response when these moments happen? For myself, I am trying to get better at sharing them, good or bad, because either wrapped in community or alone in a personal wilderness, God is present and shows up in different ways. Sometimes God shows up in ways that are so concrete, we are certain, and the feeling sustains us for a long time. We revisit it and hold onto it in more difficult times. I imagine that is how Moses did after meeting God in the burning bush, and what about Mary following her visit from the angel a the annunciation?! They both had concrete experiences of the divine that were committed to scripture and still provide testimony about how God has worked with humankind over the ages.

June 7 at 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm St. James’ Anglican Church
If we were to ask people in the city of Vancouver whether today’s Christian church is a place of inclusion, many would likely say no. “Western” faith communities are grappling with how to move beyond the stereotype of a stuffy environment, lacking in diversity. If we truly desire to make the church a place where all are welcome, what needs to change? What does it look like to be radically inclusive, and how will this impact us as individuals and communities? Join St. James’ Anglican Church as we invite two hosts of The Liturgist Podcast, “Science Mike” McHargue and Hillary McBride, to explore this topic with us. Come expecting to tackle hard questions and have your fill of nerdy answers. To buy tickets online go to: https://stjames.bc.ca/events/2018-06 and click on June 7 A note on ticket prices: You will notice that we have two levels of ticket prices available for purchase. We want event-goers to know that this is a not-for-profit event and ticket costs were kept as low as possible so that the event would not be out of reach for lowerincome attendees. However, we completely
understand that $30 still may not be doable for some, so if cost is a barrier for you, please contact Jessica Dueck at jessica.martin.dueck@gmail.com for accommodations. If income/cost is not a barrier for you and you'd like to subsidize the ticket cost of a lower-income attendee, please select the $45 ticket option. Thanks for your support. We believe removing cost barriers is a critical part of an inclusive event. About "Science Mike" Mike McHargue (better known as "Science Mike") is an author, podcaster, and speaker focused on the science behind spiritual experiences. Mike lost his faith via atheism as an adult, but rediscovered God in cosmology and neuroscience—a journey that led to his life's mission: helping people reconcile their faith with modern science. Mike is a host and co-founder of The Liturgists. His book will be available for purchase at the event. About Hillary McBride Hillary McBride is a PhD candidate at UBC and a Registered Clinical Counselor in private practice in BC. She is the author of Mothers, daughters, and body Image: Learning to love ourselves as we are, and is a host of The Liturgists.
