Votive of the Holy Spirit | June 25, 2017 | 10:30 am

Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’ as Mother Lucy, our new priest, presides at Mass for the first time. We offer a Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit, asking God’s guidance and blessing on Mother Lucy’s new ministry as a priest in the Church of God. After Mass Mother Lucy will be available in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel for all who wish to receive an individual blessing. Everyone is warmly invited to a Celebration Lunch in the Parish Hall. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES  To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst;  To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;  To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;

 To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY

A Reflection My Lord God I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that my desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. Amen. Thomas Merton, Abbey of Gethsemane

COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant All Celebrant

All

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Almighty God, by thy grace alone we are accepted and called to your service. Strengthen us by your Holy Spirit and make us worthy of our calling, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Ezekiel.

I will take you from the nations, and gather you from all the countries, and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my spirit within you, and make you follow my statutes and be careful to observe my ordinances. Then you shall live in the land that I gave to your ancestors; and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. Ezekiel 36:24-28

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

Every day will I bless you and praise your Name for ever and ever. Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; there is no end to his greatness. One generation shall praise your works to another and shall declare your power. I will ponder the glorious splendour of your majesty and all your marvelous works. Antiphon The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and of great kindness. The Lord is loving to everyone and his compassion is over all his works. All your works praise you, O Lord, and your faithful servants bless you. They make known the glory of your kingdom and speak of your power. Antiphon

The Lord upholds all those who fall; he lifts up those who are bowed down. The eyes of all wait upon you, O Lord, and you give them their food in due season. The Lord preserves all those who love him, but he destroys all the wicked. Antiphon Psalm 145:2-5, 8-11, 15-16, 21

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you. So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. Romans 8:8-17

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon Allll Deacon Allll

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.’ John 14:15-16, 23b-26

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. 26 | THE LITURGY

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY In the last few weeks many people have asked me how I feel about being ordained to the Priesthood on June 24th 2017. It is a difficult question to answer, not because I have any reservations, but because the feeling itself is so difficult to put into words.

I read something recently that spoke to me as I have been reading, praying and trying to ready myself for ordination: “Being Christian means, first, being baptized. As Williams puts it, ‘baptism takes us where Jesus is.’ To be baptized is to be ‘dropped’ both into the depths of the mystery of Christ’s Passion — and therefore into solidarity with all human suffering—and also into the depths of God’s love, ‘in the depths where the Spirit is re-creating and refreshing human life as God meant it to be.’ Being Christian is about being with Jesus in the deep joy of the Trinity and in the suffering of a devastated world.”1 For me, baptism has always been the great leveller in church. I believe we are each God’s own,

much loved, fearfully and wonderfully made, and I somehow, have found myself yielding to the pushing, pulling, sensation of God and those around me, encouraging me into the priesthood. Lucky for me Rowan Williams says “there is no one way of being a priest.”2 I sometimes wish I had known that earlier, because for the longest time, I just couldn’t image that the priesthood would be a fit. People ask me if I’m ready. “As ready as I’ll ever be!” I say. If there is no one way of being a priest, how are we to measure readiness? All I know, is that in my heart, I feel as if I am growing into a skin that fits, and am grateful to all those who have journeyed with me in discernment, and brought me to this place. So what’s next for us St. James’? I am excited to see where our shared ministry as the baptized disciples and servants of Christ will take us. See you Sunday! Deacon Lucy

OFFICE HOURS The church office will be closed Sat. July 1, due to holiday scheduling. TREASURER'S UPDATE Our overall financial picture is relatively wellbalanced at this point in the year. The invested funds, ably managed by Odlum Brown, from which we draw a large portion of our income, continue to do well. Though as blessed as we are with substantial legacies, the objective should always be that we continue to draw a low percentage from them; to that end, it remains imperative that we keep up with regular donation and the careful management of expenses. Happily, envelope giving has exceeded the amount budgeted for the first five months of the year. General donations, however, are a bit below the norm. For example, the choir and musicians, who through their gifts and time so greatly enrich our worship, could benefit from sustaining funding. Rental income from the Hall is also below budget, but it's to be remembered that the year is not yet half over. Certain income streams are not bound to the calendar and are therefore hard to predict. The cost of living is ever on the rise, with utilities presenting a growing expense, especially during the long winter that has recently ended. However, apart from a larger than average gas bill, expenses are well-regulated on all other fronts. The Rectory renovation, already separately funded, is in the final consultation and design stage before permit applications are submitted. Much work has been done to ensure the changes made to the Rectory are optimal and of good value. We can be thankful that the financial stewardship of our clergy and church officers, and the beneficence of our parishioners set us on a good course as we move into second part of the year. Respectfully submitted, Christopher Orr

Heather Graber, SOI KID’S CORNER This week in the Gospel Jesus promises that if we love him and follow in his footsteps he will ask his Father to send the Spirit to be with us and to guide us. It is not always easy to follow Jesus and we sometimes have to make difficult choices. When this happens, we can ask the Spirit, what might Jesus do? That will certainly help us to make the right decision. Prayer Father, we thank you for being with us and for your protection and love. Father, we are so grateful too that you have called Mother Lucy to follow Jesus by being a priest. We pray that you stay beside Mother Lucy as she begins this new chapter of devotion and love for you and your Son Jesus. We thank you for blessing our parish of St. James with Mother Lucy. Amen.
