Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection And how, some one may say, is the burden light, when He says, “Except one hate father and mother;” and, “Whosoever takes not up his cross, and follows after me, is not worthy of me:” and, “Whosoever forsakes not all that he has, cannot be my disciple:” when He commands even to give up our very life? Matthew 16:25 Let Paul teach you, saying, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Romans 8:35 ” And that, “The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us.” Romans 8:18 Let those teach you, who return from the council of the Jews after plenty of stripes, and “rejoice that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for the name of Christ.” Acts 5:41 And if you are still afraid and tremblest at hearing of the yoke and the burden, the fear comes not of the nature of the thing, but of your remissness; since if you are prepared, and in earnest, all will be easy to you and light. Since for this cause Christ also, to signify that we too must needs labor ourselves, did not mention the gracious things only, and then hold His peace, nor the painful things only, but set down both. Thus He both spoke of “a yoke,” and called it “easy;” both named a burden, and added that it was “light;” that you should neither flee from them as toilsome, nor despise them as over easy. But if even after all this, virtue seem to you an irksome thing, consider that vice is more irksome. And this very thing He was intimating, in that He said not first, “Take my yoke upon you,” but before that, “Come, you that labor and are heavy laden;” implying that sin too has labor, and a burden that is heavy and hard to bear. For He said not only, “You that labor,” but also, “that are heavy laden.” This the prophet too was speaking of, when in that description of her nature, “As an heavy burden they weighed heavy upon me.” And Zacharias too, describing her, says she is “A talent of lead.” Zechariah 5:7-8 And this moreover experience itself proves. For nothing so weighs upon the soul, and presses it down, as consciousness of sin; nothing so much gives it wings, and raises it on high, as the attainment of righteousness and virtue. COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant All

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

Celebrant

Let us pray. Almighty God, thy Son Jesus Christ hath taught us that what we do for the least of thy children we do also for him. Give us the will to serve others as he was the servant of all, who gave up his life and died for us, but liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Genesis. Eliezer said, "I am Abraham's servant. The Lord has greatly blessed my master, and he has become wealthy; he has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and female slaves, camels and donkeys. And Sarah my master's wife bore a son to my master when she was old; and he has given him all that he has. My master made me swear, saying, 'You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live; but you shall go to my father's house, to my kindred, and get a wife for my son.' I came today to the spring, and said, 'O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if now you will only make successful the way I am going! I am standing here by the spring of water; let the young woman who comes out to draw, to whom I shall say, "Please give me a little water from your jar to drink," and who will say to me, "Drink, and I will draw for your camels also" let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master's son.' Before I had finished speaking in my heart, there was Rebekah coming out with her water jar on her shoulder; and she went down to the spring, and drew. I said to her, 'Please let me drink.' She quickly let down her jar from her shoulder, and said, 'Drink, and I will also water your camels.' So I drank, and she also watered the camels.

Then I asked her, 'Whose daughter are you?' She said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him.' So I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her arms. Then I bowed my head and worshipped the Lord, and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way to obtain the daughter of my master's kinsman for his son. Now then, if you will deal loyally and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so that I may turn either to the right hand or to the left." And they called Rebekah, and said to her, "Will you go with this man?" She said, "I will." So they sent away their sister Rebekah and her nurse along with Abraham's servant and his men. And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, "May you, our sister, become thousands of myriads; may your offspring gain possession of the gates of their foes." Then Rebekah and her maids rose up, mounted the camels, and followed the man; thus the servant took Rebekah, and went his way. Now Isaac had come from Beer-lahai-roi, and was settled in the Negeb. Isaac went out in the evening to walk in the field; and looking up, he saw camels coming. And Rebekah looked up, and when she saw Isaac, she slipped quickly from the camel, and said to the servant, "Who is the man over there, walking in the field to meet us?" The servant said, "It is my master." So she took her veil and covered herself. And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent. He took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, 58-67

THE EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:15-25A

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Jesus said, "To what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.' For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon'; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds." At that time Jesus said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES If we choose to follow Christ we choose to live a cross-shaped life rooted in service and sacrifice. It is hard, complex, challenging and perplexing to live as a Christian in this age and in this culture. It is also wondrous, transforming, liberating and costly to live a cross-shaped life today. The Way of the Cross is a hard and narrow way. Do you treasure the sign of the cross as a transformative action, intention and prayer? The redemption which has been won for us through the victory of the cross is proclaimed when we make the sign of the cross. Can you remember the first time you made the sign of the cross? Awe-struck in the basilica of an Orthodox Church in Moscow I nudged my way through the crowds, incense and Church Slavonic. It was my first journey abroad and my first time in an Orthodox Church. I was heading for an icon of Christ and reached out to light a candle. An intimidating woman half my height and four times my age intercepted me with her presence and a barrage of instructions in Russian. Slowly I came to understand that I had to make the sign of the cross before

lighting the candle. Once I had grasped her meaning she smiled at me with the love of Christ and encouraged me in my prayers. Well the first occasion at which you made the sign of the cross may not have been so faltering or bewildering as my experience. We do know that Christians since the time of Tertullian who lived only two hundred years after the death of Christ, made the sign of the cross on their forehead to consecrate many ordinary actions in their daily life. It is a truly ancient prayer which affirms our unity with Christ and our baptismal identity. When we make the sign of the cross: - we intentionally dedicate and commend all that will follow to the glory of God the Holy Trinity; - we confess our faith in the Trinity and incarnation and the cross as the means of our redemption; - we commit to live our lives by grace not grounded in the desires of our ego.

QUOTE OF THIS WEEK "In today’s Gospel we heard these words: ‘Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart’ (Mt 11:28-29). This is the second witness that Francis gives us: that everyone who follows Christ receives true peace, the peace that Christ alone can give, a peace which the world cannot give. Many people, when they think of Saint Francis, think of peace; very few people however go deeper. What is the peace which Francis received, experienced and lived, and which he passes on to us? It is the peace of Christ, which is born of the greatest love of all, the love of the cross. It is the peace which the Risen Jesus gave to his disciples when he stood in their midst" Pope Francis, 4 October 2013: Holy Mass in Saint Francis of Assisi Square

OPPORTUNITES TO SERVE TRANSPORT? Did you know that St. James' once had a bus to transport parishioners to church and on community outings? Art Cuthbertson was the driver! Times have changed . . . We now have an urgent need and opportunity to keep parishioners involved and belonging in corporate worship. Presence at liturgies makes a significant difference in the wellbeing of individuals and our parish. Please consider offering transportation on an occasional or perhaps once a month basis. There are transportation requests from Burnaby, the West End, and 1st & Main Street. Please call Mother Joyce Locht for details: 604-614-9915. FLOWER DONATIONS How do I make a Flower Donation? A flower donation may be made for any of the three church altars: the High Altar, the altar in the Lady Chapel, or the altar in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. There is a Flower Chart on the table in the Narthex, with a space for every Sunday of the calendar year. If you would like to make a donation to sponsor the flowers on a particular Sunday: 1. Print your name clearly in the appropriate space, then 2. Call the Church Office (604-685-2532) to give the wording of your flower dedication. Your dedication will appear in the Mass Bulletin on the Sunday you have chosen. Sometimes more than one person will select the same altar for a certain Sunday. All dedications will appear in the Sunday bulletin.

How much do Flower Donations cost? The cost of flowers for the High Altar is $50. The cost for the Lady Chapel or Blessed Sacrament Chapel is $30. How do I make a payment?: 1. Include a cheque or cash in your offering envelope. Mark “Flowers” and the amount, on the outside of your envelope, or 2. Mail a cheque payable to St. James’ Church. Or drop off cash or a cheque to the Church Office.

OUR PARISH ON LEAVE Father Mark will be on leave from June 27 until July 5. A MESSAGE FROM JENNY, YOUTH WORKER Calling the wise, the fun-loving, the nurturing, the foodies, the organizers… YOU! As I continue to dream, shape and plan what the youth ministry at St. James’ will look like, I become increasingly aware of two things: 1) the need for the support of others to make things happen, and 2) most importantly, the creativity it will take to make sure that the youth continue to be connected to the larger church body and not become a separate group. It is for this reason that I want to ask you to consider how you may be able to help serve the youth in this parish (the possibilities are endless). Please join me on 19 July from 10-11:30 in the Bishop’s Room for an initial meeting to discuss the possible shape this new ministry will take along with how each of us can play a role. COMMEMORATION St. Benedict of Nursia Abbot, Patron of Europe, c.540 July 11

Today we honour Benedict, an abbot in sixthcentury Italy and the author of an influential Rule for communities of monks and nuns. In his youth Benedict abandoned society and for many years dwelt all alone in a cave in order to learn complete obedience to the will of Christ. Word of his holy life spread throughout Italy, and soon he was surrounded by several thousand disciples, whom he formed into a single community. He eventually moved to Monte Cassino, where he gathered a second community of monks. There he died around the year 547. Shortly before his death Benedict drew up a Rule for the continuing nurture of his community. This Rule teaches monks two chief duties — obedience to their abbot and the work of prayer. Obedience is not meant to be an end in itself; it is supposed to foster stability in spiritual growth, so that each monk might look beyond his own needs and support his brothers in attaining the common goal of perfect conformity to Christ. This communal discipline finds its chief expression through the daily offices, which Benedict called “the work of God.” Seven times a day the whole community gathers to pray the Psalms, hear Scripture, and offer intercession for the needs of the Church and the world. As with the precept of obedience, “the work of God” is meant to be a work of love in Jesus Christ. Several centuries after Benedict’s death, his Rule was adopted by other monastic communities throughout Europe and became the foundation for the Order of St. Benedict, which flourishes in the Roman Catholic and Anglican Communions to this day. COMMEMORATION Nathan Sรถderblom Archbishop of Uppsala, 1931 July 12

Nathan Sรถderblom was born in Trรถnรถ, Sweden, in 1866 and ordained in 1893. He was chaplain at the Swedish Embassy in Paris from 1894 to 1901, and earned a doctorate in comparative religion from the Sorbonne. He then became professor of the history of religion at the University of Uppsala, and in 1914 became Archbishop of Uppsala and Primate of the Church of Sweden. Sรถderblom, a Lutheran in a church that had retained the historic episcopate, valued the liturgy and devotional tradition of traditional Catholic worship, while seeing much of worth in the writings of liberal Protestant scholars. He believed it his duty to work for a united Christendom, both catholic and evangelical, and saw practical cooperation on social issues as a promising first step. During World War I, he worked tirelessly to alleviate the conditions of prisoners of war and refugees. For this and his subsequent work for Church unity and world peace, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1930. At Stockholm in 1925, he organized the Universal Christian Council on Life and Work. Meanwhile, a chiefly Anglican group had formed an inter-denominational Conference on Faith and Order. In 1948 the two groups merged to form the World Council of Churches. As Archbishop of Sweden, he was concerned to deepen the channels of communication between the Church and the laboring masses, and also between the Church and the intellectuals. He died 12 July 1931. http://justus.anglican.org/resources/bio/199.html.
