Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, and lighten with celestial fire. Thou the anointing Spirit art, who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart. Thy blessed unction from above is comfort, life, and fire of love. Enable with perpetual light the dullness of our blinded sight. Anoint and cheer our soiled face with the abundance of thy grace. Keep far from foes, give peace at home: where thou art guide, no ill can come. Teach us to know the Father, Son, and thee, of both, to be but One, that through the ages all along, this may be our endless song: Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Words: Latin, ninth century; trans. Bishop John Cosin, 1627 .

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader
Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts. When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, HIGH MASS | 9
Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs - in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine." But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 'In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.'" Acts 2:1-21

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.
O Lord, how manifold are your works! in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, creatures both small and great. All of them look to you to give them their food in due season. Antiphon 10 | HIGH MASS
You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; and so you renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; may the Lord rejoice in all his works. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will praise my God while I have my being. Antiphon Psalm 104:25-26, 28, 31-32, 34
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. No one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body - Jews or Greeks, slaves or free - and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." BLESSING OF THE WATERS OF THE FONT
We thank thee, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over water the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through water thou led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In water thy Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin unto everlasting life. We thank thee, Father, for the water of baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to thy Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The Celebrant lowers the Paschal candle into the water three times, each time singing in a higher voice: Now sanctify this water by the power of thy Holy Spirit‌

Then continues singing: ‌that those who are here cleansed from sin and born again, may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Saviour. To him, to thee, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION
Kneel
All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.
Allll
And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God.

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES For some it is the period of the Early Church, for others it is when the Celtic Church flourished, yet others believe it was the time of the Apostles – when do you believe was the golden age of the Church?
Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” As we cooperate with the Holy Spirit in our lives so these fruits become evident in the life of a Christian.
Surely, it is the wrong question. Or to put it another way, there has never been such a time because we have always been in a golden age since Pentecost. What I mean is this:
In the First Letter to the Corinthians (12.8-13) are described the charisms of the Holy Spirit which are given for the building up of the faithful: “To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues…”
The age of Holy Spirit is the only golden era in the Church. We live now in such a time and have always done so since the apostolic experience of the Holy Spirit on the Feast of Pentecost. Since then we can join together in praying: “Come Holy Spirit fill the hearts of your faithful people and kindle in us the fire of your love!” In a prophecy of Isaiah (11.2-3) the gifts of the Holy Spirit are described. These gifts are given so that we can grow in grace and the life of holiness. “…The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord…” The fruits of the Spirit are described in the letter to the Galatians (5.22-23), “the fruit of the

QUOTE OF THIS WEEK Because the Holy Spirit is the anointing of Christ, it is Christ who, as the head of the Body, pours out the Spirit among his members to nourish, heal, and organize them in their mutual functions, to give them life, send them to bear witness, and associate them to his self-offering to the Father and to his intercession for the whole world. JUSTICE & MERCY WE ARE CALLED TO ACT June 10, 7:00 – 9:00 pm St. Mary Parish School, 5239 Joyce St. Vancouver Dr. Austen Ivereigh will be speaking on “Catholic Social Teaching, Pope Francis and the Call to Action.” Austen Ivereigh is a Catholic writer, campaigner, and co-ordinator of Catholic Voices. Author of a forthcoming book on Pope Francis, he was a former deputy editor of The Tablet and later Director for Public Affairs of the former Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor. He frequently appears on radio and TV programmes to comment in stories involving the Church. Ivereigh has a belief that Roman Catholic social and moral teaching can have a positive effect upon the wider society. In his talk he will consider how the work of organizations like Metro Vancouver Alliance and London Citizens — alliances of trade unions, churches, mosques and others — can build upon themes to be found in papal teachings. Thanks and recognition also go out to the following parishioners who served so faithfully over the last seven months on our YW Search and Selection Committee: Betty Carlson, Anna Scott, Elisha Walker, Reece Wrightman, Brian Rocksborough-Smith and Fr. Mark. ST. JAMES’ RUNNING TEAM “The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.―John Bingham For both of us, Ruth Greenaway-Robbins and Jenny Scott, running has been a tool to bring positive change to our lives. Running provides a continual challenge and with discipline and hard work we have found the way to do what we once thought impossible. While often hard, running is also a means to joy and we would like to invite you to share in this joy as we form a St. James’ running/walking team to participate in Vancouver’s Eastside 10k Run. Saturday, September 13 will be the second annual race, which runs through the Strathcona, DTES, and Gastown. We are looking for individuals and families of all abilities to join us for this event as we form a St. James’ running/walking team. If you would like to train together for the 10k we will meet every Sunday at 12:45pm (soft start) and Thursday at 5:30pm after Evening Prayer starting Sunday, June 8.You say you’ve never run before or can’t imagine walking that far? Do not fear, for we will THE THURIBLE | 33
provide all participants with a training plan that will help you slowly increase your strength and endurance along with your confidence. Trust me, if we can do it, so can you! If you would like to support the team but are not interested or able to run/walk in the event, there are a variety of other ways to help, including light snacks, financial support, cheer squads and also volunteers at the event. For more information talk to Ruth or Jenny or email at scott.jenny@gmail.com or ruthgrsoprano@me.com. "Let us run with endurance the race God has set before us" Hebrews 12:1. MOTHERS’ UNION EDWARDIAN STRAWBERRY TEA The Mothers’ Union Edwardian Strawberry Tea will be held Sunday, June 15, 2014, after High Mass in the Parish Hall. The tea will replace the normal coffee hour and also the designated Fellowship Sunday scheduled for that day. We will offer a variety of home-made sandwiches, strawberry shortcake with freshly picked BC strawberries and whipping cream, tea and coffee. There will be musical entertainment. We will be particularly remembering the 100th Anniversary of the start of World War 1. It is hoped that parishioners will get into the spirit of Edwardian England by wearing a fancy hat or fascinator for the women; bowtie, cravat, waistcoat and/or boater for the men.

If you have holiday plans for that weekend and know you will be away, but would like to purchase a ticket for someone who cannot afford the $10 charge, this would be most appreciated. Last year we were able to give away several tickets. Children under 8 are free. The proceeds will be donated to the MU Northern Clergy Families’ Fund, our primary national fundraiser, and also the Parenting Program in Canada.
FINANCIAL EQUILIBRIUM A MESSAGE FROM THE TREASURER The Treasurer's duty is to be both the voice of caution and clarion of hope! Today I am in appeal mode. We are approaching the traditional summer decline in the Sunday collection, and longer term we confront the potential for a shortfall in our budgeted income from congregation giving (possibly amounting to some thousands of dollars). Please consider giving on a regular basis (weekly is best) to support the marvellous worship and vital services of St. James’. If at all possible, could you make your regular donation via credit card or direct debit, and help my clarion call be one of success. For information on the “Three Ways of Giving” pick up the blue pamphlet in the Narthex. Rhodri Windsor-Liscombe

Still hardly anyone knows about it, so please take the time to send it out to your networks and the media on Facebook, Twitter, email, website, and text. § Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA) will be sending out a new email and post on Facebook and email every weekday in June so that more people become aware of First Nations people’s unique place and history in what is now known as Canada. Please feel free to pass these posts on, but be sure to include the information that it came from the Urban Native Youth Association.
§ You can sign up to get UNYA updates or let us know of any National Aboriginal Day events in the Vancouver area (we will include them in our June 16th Facebook posting and email blast) at info@unya.bc.ca § The original First Nations population on Turtle Island (North America) is estimated to be from tens of millions to over 100 million people within hundreds of unique Nations. § Most First Nations have their creation stories happening here in North America, not somewhere else. COMMEMORATION St. Columba Abbot of Iona, Missionary, 597 June 9
Columba was a mighty abbot in sixth-century Ireland, who ruled a network of monasteries in his native land and helped to lay the foundation of the Christian Church in Scotland. Born into the clan O’Neill, Columba lived at a time when the druids, the priests of Celtic paganism, still held sway. He became known as someone whose Christian holiness allowed him to command the magic of the druids and to bend it to the will of Christ. Then, at the age of forty-two, he left Ireland in order to become, as a later biographer said, “a pilgrim for Christ.” He and twelve disciples settled on Iona, a small island off the western coast of Scotland.
By becoming “a pilgrim for Christ,” Columba meant to set a more perfect course for his inward voyage with the Lord — that is, to enter more deeply into the life of prayer and penance. But he was committed to helping others become “pilgrims for Christ,” too. So, from Iona, he founded several new monasteries in Scotland. Missionary work was a by-product of these foundations. The still-pagan Scots were greatly impressed by the austere life of the Irish monks, and even more by Columba’s own powers. His disciples seized the opportunity and began to preach the Gospel. Before long many Scottish tribes were converted to Christ. Columba himself made a few journeys into the Scottish mainland, and he seems to have had a hand in converting at least one important chieftain. As a result, Columba came to be regarded as the Apostle of Scotland; and that is how we remember him today, which is the traditional anniversary of his death in the year 597. COMMEMORATION Ordination of Henry Budd First Canadian Native Priest, 1853 June 10
Today we remember Henry Budd, who in 1853 became the first person of the First Nations in Canada to be ordained as an Anglican priest. He was born to a father from the Swampy Cree and a Metis mother, and was named Sa-ka-chu-wes′ cum, which in the Cree language means “Going up the hill.” After his father’s death he was put into the care of an English missionary named John West, who baptized him and gave him the English name “Henry Budd.” Brought up to act like an Englishman, he eventually became a catechist for the Church Missionary Society and began to work among the Cree in northern Rupert’s Land. He proved so effective in teaching the faith and managing his isolated mission that the Society recommended his ordination to the priesthood, which took place in 1853. Budd spent the next fourteen years running a mission in Saskatchewan, then was assigned to The Pas. He possessed a striking presence and was a superb speaker both in English and in his native Cree. But just because he was Cree, the Church Missionary Society allowed him only half the annual stipend that a married white missionary got — even though he supported his own wife and children, his mother, and his brother’s family. But he did not stint his labours in preaching the gospel, or in seeing to the needs of his aboriginal congregations. When he died in 1875, one of his people said that he had not known what it was to lose a father until the death of Mr. Budd. For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994
