A Reflection THE FINGER OF GOD is come upon us by his Holy Spirit. We who are learning the love of a father, know it; we who have seen Jesus, know it; we upon whom the Holy Spirit has fallen know it; the finger of God has come upon us. Be thou the breath of our breath, O Holy Spirit, the thought of our thought, the light of our light, the love of our love. Bring thy health to our infirmity, thy vigour to our health, thy generosity to our vigour. Let us walk in the Spirit and repose in the Spirit; work with the Spirit, judge after the Spirit; by the Spirit let us make melody in our hearts unto the Spirit, always. If thou dwell in us, O Holy Spirit, we dwell in heaven; we are passed from death unto life; All is light, new light; and love, new love; and power, new power; and fountains of joy, by thy gift, by thy Presence. Verily, the finger of God is come upon us. O Holy Spirit, heal us, hold us, lead us, fill and fulfil us, always, ever. My God, my Glory, Eric Milner-White, sometime Dean of York .

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader
Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts. When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs - in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and HIGH MASS | 9
said, "They are filled with new wine." But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 'In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.'" Acts 2:1-21

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.
O Lord, how manifold are your works! in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, creatures both small and great. Antiphon There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, which you have made for the sport of it. All of them look to you to give them their food in due season. You give it to them; they gather it; you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. Antiphon

You hide your face, and they are terrified; you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust. You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; and so you renew the face of the earth. Antiphon May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; may the Lord rejoice in all his works. He looks at the earth and it trembles; he touches the mountains and they smoke. Antiphon I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will praise my God while I have my being. May these words of mine please him; I will rejoice in the Lord. Hallelujah! Antiphon Psalm 104:25-35, 37b
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Romans. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:22-27

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
Jesus said to the disciples, "When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgement: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgement, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you." John 15:26-27, 16:4b15

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Many Happy Returns to Christians everywhere! The Feast of Pentecost which we celebrate today, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the rushing wind and in tongues of fire upon the apostles with the women in the Upper Room, is sometimes known as the Birthday of the Church. Certainly from that moment the apostles and their companions were transformed; from a sceptical and fearful huddle they became a confident and determined band, leaving the security of that locked and barred Upper Room to go out to tell the Good News of Christ, crucified and risen. As Mother Lucy reminded us the other week, the Book of Acts (to which the Lectionary points us especially in Eastertide) tells the remarkable story of the rapid growth of the Church, first in Jerusalem and then around Asia Minor and even to Rome, the centre of Empire. Birthdays are times for party and celebration, as we shall be doing in our festal liturgy. They are also opportunities to reflect on what has been, and to look forward to what will be. We give thanks here
at St James’ for the rich heritage of faith we have inherited from those who have gone before us, our tradition of liturgy and worship linked with commitment to social justice and care for the poor and marginalised. It is good that today, the Church’s Birthday, we celebrate the sacrament of baptism, and welcome Alex into the family of the Body of Christ. As we look forward, we pray the wisdom and the guidance of the Spirit, that She will inform and inspire anew our liturgy and worship, and our commitment to social justice, that we may “proclaim afresh in this - and the next - generation” the wonderful mystery of God’s love for the whole of creation, and for each one of us, revealed in the self-giving birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in us the fire of your love. Alleluia! Many Happy Returns! Fr Kevin

CORPUS CHRISTI High Mass for the Feast of Corpus Christi Thurs, May 31 at 6:30 High Mass for the Feast of Corpus Christi with outdoor Procession of the Blessed Sacrament, will be celebrated at St James'. Archbishop Skelton will be the preacher. Since the mid-thirteenth century the Thursday after Trinity Sunday has been observed in the West as a day of thanksgiving for the gift of the Blessed Sacrament in the life of the church. This observance has been restored to the Calendar of many Churches of the Anglican Communion, including our own, in the liturgical renewal of the last century. Known often by its shortened Latin name, Corpus Christi, it is the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. Of course we give thanks for the Institution of Holy Communion in Holy Week, on Maundy Thursday. Then, though, we are caught up in the solemn events of the Lord’s Passion, with the washing of the feet, the watch in the garden, and the betrayal of Jesus set before us in the context of the Last Supper. Corpus Christi gives us the opportunity to focus our thanksgiving on the sacramental presence of Christ in the life of the church, how we are joined together as the Body of Christ by our feeding on the Bread of Life and drinking from Christ the Vine, how we draw our life and strength from him, how we receive here the pledge and foretaste of the banquet of heaven. Remember Jesus’ words: “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the day; for my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.” [John 6.53-58, NRSV]
A traditional part of the celebration has been a Procession of the Blessed Sacrament, clergy and people together taking the consecrated host (in what is called a Monstrance, from the Latin “to show”: see photograph) with them into the neighbourhood. This witnesses to the presence of Christ in the sacrament, of course, but its intent is more than that: it is a procession of witness to Christ present in the midst of God’s people, to Christ present in God’s creation, and to Christ’s love for all. This year St James’, together with the DofNW Chapter of the Society of Catholic Priests, extends a warm invitation to people from across the diocese to join with our Bishop in this celebration and act of witness. RADICAL INCLUSION: How does it impact our brains/bodies, communities, faith? Thur. June 7 at 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm St. James’ Anglican Church If we were to ask people in the city of Vancouver whether today’s Christian church is a place of inclusion, many would likely say no. “Western” faith communities are grappling with how to move beyond the stereotype of a stuffy environment, lacking in diversity. If we truly desire to make the church a place where all are welcome, what needs to change? What does it look like to be radically inclusive, and how will this impact us as individuals and communities? Join St. James’ Anglican Church as we invite two hosts of The Liturgist Podcast, “Science Mike” McHargue and Hillary McBride, to explore this topic with us. Come expecting to tackle hard questions and have your fill of nerdy answers.
ticket costs were kept as low as possible so that the event would not be out of reach for lowerincome attendees. However, we completely understand that $30 still may not be doable for some, so if cost is a barrier for you, please contact Jessica Dueck at jessica.martin.dueck@gmail.com for accommodations. If income/cost is not a barrier for you and you'd like to subsidize the ticket cost of a lower-income attendee, please select the $45 ticket option. Thanks for your support. We believe removing cost barriers is a critical part of an inclusive event. About "Science Mike" Mike McHargue (better known as "Science Mike") is an author, podcaster, and speaker focused on the science behind spiritual experiences. Mike lost his faith via atheism as an adult, but rediscovered God in cosmology and neuroscience—a journey that led to his life's mission: helping people reconcile their faith with modern science. Mike is a host and co-founder of The Liturgists. His book will be available for purchase at the event. About Hillary McBride Hillary McBride is a PhD candidate at UBC and a Registered Clinical Counselor in private practice in BC. She is the author of Mothers, daughters, and body Image: Learning to love ourselves as we are, and is a host of The Liturgists. Hillary's academic work focuses on trauma, sexuality, gender, feminist approaches to therapy, and spirituality. Her book will be available for purchase at the event.
