A Reflection But who shall see the glorious day When, throned on Zion's brow, The LORD shall rend that veil away Which hides the nations now? When earth no more beneath the fear Of this rebuke shall lie; When pain shall cease, and every tear Be wiped from every eye. Then, Judah, thou no more shall mourn Beneath the heathen's chain; Thy days of splendor shall return, And all be new again. The Fount of Life shall then be quaft In peace, by all who come; And every wind that blows shall waft Some long-lost exile home. PROCESSIONAL HYMN 345 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Christ is the King, O friends rejoice Christ is the King, O friends rejoice! brothers and sisters, with one voice make all men know he is your choice: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. The first Apostles round them drew thousands of faithful men and true, sharing a faith for ever new: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. Then magnify the Lord and raise anthems of joy and holy praise for Christ’s brave saints of ancient days: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. O Christian women, Christian men, all the world over, seek again the Way disciples followed then: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. Christ through all ages is the same; place the same hope in his great name, with the same faith his word proclaim: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. Let Love’s unconquerable might God’s people everywhere unite in service to the Lord of light: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

A reading from the Book of Ezekiel. For thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice. Therefore, thus says the Lord God to them: I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. scattered them far and wide, I will save my flock, and they shall no longer be ravaged; and I will judge between sheep and sheep. I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. And I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them; I, the Lord, have spoken. Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. Antiphon Psalm 95:1-7a
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?' And the king will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.' Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?' Then he will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Here we are at the end of our liturgical year. I look back on the last twelve months and in particular the journey we have been on with Matthew. Matthew is the gospel writer that provides us with big pictures, extremes and parables galore. The overarching theme presents us with Christ the King and promised Messiah of Israel. There are over 60 references to the Hebrew Scriptures most of which are prophetic and we gain insight into Jesus’ childhood that the other gospels do not contain.
Matthew answers question with Jesus’ last few words in his gospel: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:19).
Inform. Inspire. Invite.
Our mandate is simply to go on, proclaiming Jesus’ life, death and resurrection to all who will listen and to discern God’s will for us as we go. I am very much looking forward to this next year with all of you here at St. James’ . . . and to the pies after the High Mass! Mother Lucy
We have listened to the Sermon on the Mount and faced the challenging parables that deal with end times and our responsibility as Christians to the gospel. So what now? Here we are at the end of our liturgical year, on the feast of the Reign of Christ with Advent and the new church year just around the corner. What should we do next? (Besides run the gauntlet of December and all that comes with preparation for the celebration of the incarnation at Christmas).

FORMATION – THE SONGS OF ADVENT Thursdays Nov. 30, Dec. 7, 14 & 21 at 6-8 pm in the Boardroom Sundays Dec. 3, 10 & 17 at 12:30-2:00 pm in the Parish Hall Jump into Advent with scripture and song! As familiar as we are with the songs of Christmas, there are four songs recorded in the Bible to celebrate the birth of Jesus that most of us aren’t familiar with. The angels sang a song to the shepherds. Mary sang a song to God after she had time to get over the shocking news that she was going to be the mother of the Savior. Simeon also had a song. Then there’s Zechariah’s song. Zechariah was an elderly priest who sang after being visited by an angel. This wasn’t like a Broadway musical—these people didn’t suddenly burst into song. But the ancient church captured their words and created songs known as canticles. For the Thursday evening slot, register with Mother Lucy as space is limited: lucy@stjames.bc.ca or let the office know if you are coming to the Sunday sessions so we know how many booklets and sandwiches we will need: office@stjames.bc.ca | 604-685-2532 ADVENT BOUTIQUE The Women’s Guild will hold their Advent Boutique Sale on Sun. Refreshments and a light lunch will be provided. Please RSVP the office by Thurs. Dec. 7. FLOWER DEDICATIONS FOR CHRISTMAS Still several days to go before the big day but time to think about flowers for Christmas. If you are planning to donate flowers for Christmas please get your dedications into the office by Fri. Dec. 15 in order to get your dedication into the mass booklet. You will not be able to select a specific altar but just mention “Christmas Flowers”. The Flower Guild members will be grateful for any holly or shrubs with red berries that you can spare from your gardens. Please bring them to church a day or two before Sat. Dec. 23, when we will be making the arrangements. Many thanks. Celia Dodds (President) FUNERAL PLANNING November, the month of remembering, All Saints’, All Souls’ and Armistice Day, is a timely reminder to us all of our own mortality, and of our responsibility to prepare ourselves spiritually and by ordering our affairs. For the sake of family & friends, it is important that we have a Will, and that we leave instructions regarding our preferred funeral arrangements. The Office has a form available for this purpose, and the Legacy booklet from the Diocese has a very helpful Checklist of things to bear in mind when preparing to make a Will. Copies are available today. CHOIR The High Mass Choir is very much looking forward to presenting glorious music at the Midnight Mass of Christmas Eve.
