Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.
The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection The light of dawn comes before the sun, and meekness is the precursor of all humanity. So let us listen to the order in which Christ, our Light, places these virtues. He says: “Learn from Me, because I am meek and humble of heart” (Matt. 11:29). Therefore before gazing at the sun of humility we must let the light of meekness flow over us. If we do, we will then be able to look steadily at the sun. The true order of these virtues teaches us that we are totally unable to turn our eyes to the sun before we have first become accustomed to the light. Meekness is a mind consistent amid honor or dishonor. Meekness prays quietly and sincerely for a neighbor however troublesome he may be. Meekness is a rock looking out over the sea of anger which breaks the waves which come crashing on it and stays entirely unmoved. Meekness is the bulwark of patience, the door, indeed the mother of love, and the foundation of discernment. For it is said: “The Lord will teach His ways to the meek” (Ps. 24:9). And it is meekness that earns pardon for our sins, gives confidence to our prayers and makes a place for the Holy Spirit. “To whom shall I look if not the meek and the peaceful?” (Isa. 66:2) Meekness works alongside of obedience, guides a religious community, checks frenzy, curbs anger. It is a minister of joy, an imitation of Christ, the possession of angels, a shackle for demons, a shield against bitterness. The Lord finds rest in the hearts of the meek, while the turbulent spirit is home of the devil. “The meek shall inherit the earth” (Matt. 5:5), indeed, rule over it; and the bad-tempered shall be carried off as booty from their land. A meek soul is a throne of simplicity, but a wrathful mind is a creator of evil. A gentle soul will make a place for wise words, since the “Lord will guide the meek in judgment” (Ps. 24:9), or rather, in discretion. An upright soul is the companion of humility, but an evil one is the daughter of pride. The soul of the meek shall be filled with wisdom, but the angry mind will cohabit with darkness and ignorance. John Climacus, “Step 24: On Meekness, Simplicity, Guilelessness, and Wickedness” The Ladder of Divine Ascent, Paulist Press, 1989

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the book of Genesis. Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, "I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, "Surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it!" And he was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." Genesis 28:10-17

Antiphon Psalm 103:19-22
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Revelation to John. War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world - he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming, "Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. Rejoice then, you heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!" When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, "Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!" Nathanael asked him, "Where did you get to know me?" Jesus answered, "I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you." Nathanael replied, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man." John 1:47-51

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES Who wants to be “meek”? It doesn’t seem very appealing does it? What is it to be meek? Perhaps, it means being weak, a pushover, a doormat, spiritless, or submissive? “Meekness” (more common in the King James Version) and “gentleness” (used by the New Revised Standard Version in the Liturgy) are used interchangeably to translate the New Testament Greek term πραΰς (praus). Jesus taught that the meek are blessed and to be inheritors of the earth (Matthew 5.5). So how does that work? Paul described meekness, or gentleness, as a fruit of Spirit (Galatians 5.23; 6.1). Elsewhere he identifies this character trait with Jesus: “I myself, Paul, appeal to you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10.1). It is one of the gifts of election: “As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive” (Colossians 3.12-13). Also, it is one of the gifts of calling: “I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord,
beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4.1-3).
Inform. Inspire. Invite.
Why should we care about being meek / gentle as Christians? The witness of scripture clearly values this character trait, which is a fruit of our life with the Holy Spirit as we are incorporated into Christ. How do we practice meekness, or gentleness, in our lives? John Climacus (c. 579-659, monk and author of The Ladder) encourages us in the way of meekness (Step 24): “Meekness is a mind consistent amid honor and dishonor.” Who among us when praised, or criticized, can keep our equilibrium and focus on Christ? Meekness is “a minister of joy, an imitation of Christ the possession of angels … The Lord finds rest in the hearts of the meek”. How is this possible? “A meek soul is a throne of simplicity,” says Climacus. What choices and actions can we make in our lives at this time to live more simply?

MEEKNESS: True humbleness, gentleness, consideration for others, self-respect without vanity, reverence, and perfect humility—for all these qualities are connoted by the term “meekness”—alone lead, according to Christian ethics, to the realization of moral perfection, and at the same time to the attainment of real temporal prosperity. In NT phraseology the meek are most truly happy (or blessed), because theirs is not only the Kingdom of Heaven, but also the inheritance of the earth. RELATIONSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS METRO VANCOUVER ALLIANCE ELECTION ACCOUNTABILITY ASSEMBLY Wed. Oct. 9, 7-9 pm Italian Cultural Centre, 3075 Slocan Street Over the past year MVA engaged in a listening campaign involving conversations with hundreds of people in our member organizations and subsequent discernment process. Four issues – on Poverty, Housing, Transit and Social Isolation – were identified as the things MVA member institutions felt they had in common and could work on together. The research teams met regularly over the spring and summer – digging into their issue, consulting with people in the community, talking to experts – and identified problems facing people in the Lower Mainland. They then explored solutions to those problems. St. James’ parishioners served on these Teams: Mary Brown on Transit, Graham Murchie, Sheila Paterson and Pat McSherry on Poverty. On October 9, 2014, delegations from 49 member organizations, representing 200,000 citizens, will gather at the Italian Cultural Centre. This exercise in non-partisan grassroots democracy will bring together close to 1000 people including civic, faith and community leaders. At the Assembly we will ask Vancouver’s municipal politicians to explore new options around affordable housing in the city and re-examine the enforcement of current housing by-laws; commit to a proven anti-poverty strategy at the municipal level; actively engage in the upcoming transit referendum and support our campaign for affordable, accessible transit; and explore options and work with us to reduce social isolation and help neighbourhoods flourish by working with our member organizations.

QUOTE OF THIS WEEK Listening doesn’t cost anything. It doesn’t require you to commit to anything. All you have to do is open your ears and hear the ideas and hopes and pain and joys and confusions of your people. We will benefit since all of us feel better having been heard. You will benefit because, having listened, you won’t be acting in a vacuum. So here’s another suggestion: Listen to everyone, but go out of your way to meet with people who feel marginalized by the church …
No, you’re not going to be able to do much to solve their problems. The issues involved are too complex. But, by listening to them — I mean, really hearing them — you will help them to feel a little less alienated. A little less excluded. And you’ll be able to do a better job in the future. You’ll approach questions in a more nuanced way. You’ll know the faces and the lives behind the issues. From an open letter for Chicago's new archbishop, Blase Cupich - Sep. 19, 2014 by Patrick T. COMMEMORATION St. Jerome Priest, and Monk of Bethlehem, Teacher of the Faith, 420 September 30
Jerome was a fourth-century monk who produced the standard Latin version of Scriptures known as the Vulgate and by his own commentaries on the text had a lasting influence on the Church’s interpretation of the Bible. He was born in Italy around the year 340 and baptized as a young man. His upbringing led him to expect the best of himself, and he set his heart on spiritual perfection. His first experiment in monastic life ended in scandal; we do not know what it was all about, except that it forced him to leave his home. He then tried his vocation as a hermit in Palestine, but found that he could not endure the physical hardship it required. He eventually returned to Italy, where he became secretary to the bishop of Rome and began his lifelong work of editing and improving earlier Latin translations of Scripture in order to produce the Vulgate, whose name means “the Bible in Common Speech.” In the meantime, Jerome again moved to Palestine and settled at Bethlehem, where he gathered and ruled over a community of monks and another community of devout women. Here he wrote his commentaries on Scripture, which were to remain standard reference works in the Latin West for over a thousand years. He died at Bethlehem in the year 420. Jerome could exercise great charm in personal encounters, and some of this charm is reflected in his letters. But he was also a vain, pugnacious, and jealous man who could not endure someone else being thought his equal; and his jealousy (as much as his concern for orthodox teaching) led him to besmirch and finally destroy the reputations of several erstwhile friends. By common consent he is the most unlikeable person ever called a saint by the Church — and yet the Church recognizes that God may nourish the faithful by means of even the least promising instruments. So, we do not dwell on the flaws of Jerome but give thanks for the fruit of his labours as translator and scholar, because we see in them a true work of God’s grace. COMMEMORATION St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus Religious and Teacher of the Faith, 1897 October 3
Thérèse Martin was the last of nine children born to Louis and Zelie Martin on January 2, 1873, in Alençon, France. However, only five of these children lived to reach adulthood. Precocious and sensitive, Thérèse needed much attention. Her mother died when she was 4 years old. As a result, her father and sisters babied young Thérèse. She had a spirit that wanted everything. At the age of 14, on Christmas Eve in 1886, Thérèse had a conversion that transformed her life. From then on, her powerful energy and sensitive spirit were turned toward love, instead of keeping herself happy. At 15, she entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux to give her whole life to God. She took the religious name Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. Living a hidden, simple life of prayer, she was gifted with great intimacy with God. Through sickness and dark nights of doubt and fear, she remained faithful to God, rooted in His merciful love. After a long struggle with tuberculosis, she died on September 30, 1897, at the age of 24. Her last words were the story of her life: “My God, I love You!” The world came to know Thérèse through her autobiography, “Story of a Soul”. She described her life as a “little way of spiritual childhood.” She lived each day with an unshakable confidence in God's love. “What matters in life,” she wrote, “is not great deeds, but great love.”
Thérèse lived and taught a spirituality of attending to everyone and everything well and with love. She believed that just as a child becomes enamored with what is before her, we should also have a childlike focus and totally attentive love. Thérèse’s spirituality is of doing the ordinary, with extraordinary love. Thérèse saw the seasons as reflecting the seasons of God’s love affair with us. She loved flowers and saw herself as the “little flower of Jesus,” who gave glory to God by just being her beautiful little self among all the other flowers in God’s garden. Because of this beautiful analogy, the title “little flower” remained with St. Thérèse. http://www.littleflower.org/abouttherese/learn/index.asp.
