Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.
The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Don’t be afraid then that your obedience to the Gospel, your listening to others, will impoverish your personality or decrease your responsibility. It summons you rather to live out your responsibility in your encounter with others. Never make the mistake of thinking you can gain freedom by your own exertions. It is something which you give to others and which you receive yourself from them No laws, no rules, no therapy, no discussions are capable of setting our communities in order and making them fruitful if the Spirit of Jesus is not master there. In the community there will be someone who exercises the service of authority. His first task is to foster unity among you and make the community grow in faithfulness to its vocation. His authority builds up the community, but at the same time he has authority only in so far as you are ready to obey him. -from Rule for a New Brother, Benedictine Priory - Regina Pacis, Great Britain: Anchor Press, 1973.

HYMN 193 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Stars of the Morning (Second Tune) Stars of the morning, so gloriously bright, filled with celestial resplendence and light, these that, where night never followeth day, raise the Trisagion ever and aye. These are thy counsellors, these dost thou own, Lord God of Sabaoth, nearest thy throne; these are thy ministers, these dost thou send, Help of the helpless ones! man to defend. These keep the guard amidst Salem's dear bowers, Thrones, Principalities, Virtues and Powers, where, with the Living Ones, mystical Four, Cherubim, Seraphim, bow and adore. "Who like the Lord?" thunders Michael the chief; Raphael, "the cure of God," comforteth grief; and, as at Nazareth, prophet of peace, Gabriel, "the light of God," bringeth release.
Then, when the earth was first poised in mid space, then, when the planets first sped on their race, then, when were ended the six days' employ, then all the sons of God shouted for joy. Still let them succour us; still let them fight, Lord of angelic hosts, battling for right; Till, where their anthems they ceaselessly pour, We with the angels may bow and adore.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the book of Genesis. Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, "I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, "Surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it!" And he was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." Genesis 28:10-17

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Revelation to John. War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world - he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming, "Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. Rejoice then, you heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!" When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, "Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!" Nathanael asked him, "Where did you get to know me?" Jesus answered, "I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you." Nathanael replied, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man." John 1:47-51

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

28 | THE THURIBLE
The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY The Book of Genesis describes how God created us to be intelligent and free and he declared our creation to be very good. This freedom is expressed in our capacity for selfdetermination in our physical, moral, intellectual, social and spiritual life. The decisions and choices we make are an expression of our free-will. God does not coerce, just as Jesus never coerced his disciples, including Judas. This freedom means we can also choose evil which is part of our human struggle. St. Paul describes in the letter to the Romans that we set out to do good and often end up doing what we never intended. Sometimes when we think we have chosen what is good, our choice turns out very badly. Wise choices require much discernment. This comes about through moral and spiritual practice as we live into our baptismal promises. Commitment to Christ puts an end to certain choices in this life, but paradoxically opens a realm to true freedom.
True freedom for human beings turns out to be when we decide to participate in God’s very goodness and love. Our ultimate good is enclosed and shaped when we freely choose to actively love as God loves. We are not truly free
when we indulge in our vices, addictions, selfishness, blindness or deafness. We become free when we align our will with God’s will; which is for us to grow in love. Commitment to the goodness and love of God opens a future that we could never imagine. So the Kingdom of God is about growing into mature interdependence which grows through the true understanding of relationships with God and others. All relationships are built upon listening, heeding, and responding to others for the common good. This is the true meaning of obedience which also includes an understanding of authority where through listening to one another, so we discern the common good for our community. When a community lives as interdependent equals we reflect the very triune nature of God; a community of equals sharing unity in life and love. Thus God invites us into becoming who he created us to be and towards a freedom of ever deeper love.

was originally broadcast by the BBC beginning in October 1942 (during World War II). Today we will hear the first play in the cycle, Kings in Judea. The fact that Jesus and the other biblical characters speak in contemporary colloquial English rather than using the formal words of the Bible was a source of controversy at the time. By setting the story of Christ's life in England in the twentieth century, Sayers brings a sense of immediacy and relevance to the biblical narrative. Please come. NEW PARISH COUNCIL OFFICERS APPOINTED St. James’ Trustees are pleased to announce effective immediately the appointments of Annie Grant as new Parish Council (PC) Chair and Doug Ibbott as our new PC Secretary, both to serve in these positions until the elections at our Annual Vestry meeting next February. We thank Doug and Annie for volunteering for these important parish leadership positions. We look forward to welcoming them both into their new positions at our critical upcoming Interim Process Special Parish Council Meeting to be held 10:00 am 2:00 pm on Saturday, Sept. 26, to which all parishioners are invited. We are pleased to welcome Louisa Farrell who will be joining our parish and working with children and their families during Sunday Masses starting in October. Having been involved with children's ministry for 12 years at St. Helen's and St. John's Shaughnessy, Louisa is a trained and certified Godly Play instructor with extensive church and public school experience assisting regular and special needs children and in establishing Sunday service bible story learning opportunities for them. We look forward to Louisa's arrival at St. James’ and to her beginning her work with our children in October.

KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. Stairway to Heaven From our first reading, Genesis, chapter 28 verse 12: Jacob had a dream in which he saw a stairway [ladder] resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. Have you heard of Jacob's ladder? It’s in a story in the Bible about a man named Jacob who had a dream about a ladder that reached up to heaven. Here it is: Jacob started on a long journey to a town called Haran. When he reached a certain place he stopped to spend the night. He took a large stone and rested his head on it and went to sleep. As he slept, Jacob had a dream. In his dream there was a ladder that reached from the ground all the way up to heaven. There were angels running up and down the ladder. He looked and saw God himself standing at the top of the ladder. God spoke to Jacob and told him that he was going to bless him and his people and that he would watch over
him and keep him wherever he went. When Jacob woke up he said, "Surely the Lord is in this place." Then he took the stone he had used for a pillow and poured oil on it. He named the place Bethel, which means the house of the Lord. This is a wonderful story of how God blessed Jacob, but it is much more than that. It is also a picture of what Jesus has done for you and me. Jesus came down to earth to make a way for you and me to get to heaven. Jesus invites to walk the way with him, the only way for us to get to heaven. Heavenly Father, we thank you that Jesus is the way for us to get to heaven. Help us to walk with him, the Way, the Truth and the Life. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Adapted from Sermons4Kids.com Adapted from www.sermons4kids.com

One might argue this situation is too large for a moderate sized parish such as ours to effect much change but we feel that many hands make challenging tasks more achievable. In this regard, we endeavor to pitch in to support a parish that is undertaking full sponsorship for one year. We see ourselves as a satellite parish that can help with the heavy lifting of another and provide some help that might fit well in our domain. If they need a chest of drawers, once settled in Metro Vancouver, we know someone who has this item to donate. Maybe it’s a teapot or some advice about a school…one never knows how we may help but it will become apparent as things progress. We have been in contact with the Chair of the Diocesan Refugee Unit and will be receiving more information on how best to help quite soon. Discussions are underway and we are keen to provide updates as they become more concrete. As stated before, the OC pledged $2,500.00 towards this proposal, requesting that our parish match these funds to achieve a total of $5,000.00 so we can respond quickly with needed resources. 18 | THE THURIBLE 32
We are pleased to announce a running total of $4,020.00 has been achieved to date and are confident that we will reach our goal within a few days. Thank-you to all who have contributed to help assuage this crisis so far. Your generous donations are deeply appreciated. OUR DIOCESE REGARDING THE SYRIAN REFUGEE CRISIS from the Right Reverend Melissa Skelton, 9th Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of New Westminster
Again, we who live in privilege in the west have seen the horrifying results of civil wars in other parts of the world. The September 3, 2015, video and photographs from the Turkish beach saddened the entire world. The Kurdi family are in my daily prayers, as are all Syrian refugees and all others displaced by the horrors of war. The Anglican Diocese of New Westminster is a Sponsorship (Refugee) Agreement Holder. Even prior to the worldwide coverage of the current situation, a number of parishes were in the process (and remain in that process) of sponsoring refugee families. On the day of the publication of the photos from the Turkish beach a parish in the diocese was notified that they had been approved to move forward with their sponsorship of an Iraqi refugee family who are scheduled to arrive in Canada, September 22.
The diocesan legal team encourages parishes and interested parties to make all applications through the Diocesan Refugee Unit. The Reverend McGee can then make the connections as necessary with an available member of the legal team. This will help ensure that those who are applying have a clear understanding of the commitment involved in the process before they begin. I am optimistic that we in the Diocese of New Westminster will be able to help. I am moved and heartened by the response of the parishes of our diocese to this crisis, as well as other civic and community leaders, including Vancouver’s mayor, who has convened a Town Hall meeting tonight to discuss what the City of Vancouver can do to host refugees. I hope you will join with me in prayer for everyone involved in this crisis and I encourage parishes to contact the Diocesan Refugee Unit Chair, the Reverend Michael McGee through the diocesan website: http://vancouver.anglican.ca/
It is parishes and groups of parishes working with the Diocesan Refugee Unit group and representatives of the diocesan legal team who sponsor refugees. The Chair of the Diocesan Refugee Unit, the Reverend Michael McGee has received numerous requests from individuals, and people representing parishes for information about refugee sponsorship. There has also been a marked increase in direct requests from refugees and refugee families through the diocesan website.

COMMEMORATION St. Lorenzo Ruiz and Companions Martyrs in the Philippines, 1637 September 28
Lorenzo Ruiz was born in Binondo, Manila, in the Philippines, between 1600 and 1610. The exact date of his birth is unknown since the baptismal records of the church of Binondo were destroyed. Lorenzo had a Chinese father and a Filipino mother. During his youth, he learned Spanish from the Dominicans, whom he served as altar boy and sacristan. He was exceptionally gifted with beautiful penmanship and became a professional calligrapher, earned the title of “escribaño” who transcribe baptismal, confirmation and marriage documents into the church’s official books. In 1636, a grave crime was committed in Manila, authorities conducted a manhunt for Lorenzo because they believed he knew something about it or was himself involved in it. When Lorenzo learned of some missionary priests leaving Manila, thinking that they were going to Macao, he sought help from his Dominican superiors who believed in his innocence, he was allowed aboard the ship, along with three Dominican priests; only when they were on the ship did Lorenzo learn that the missionaries were headed for Japan, where Christians were suffering terrible persecutions at that time. When the boat landed at Okinawa the group was arrested and imprisoned on basis of their Christian religion. They were brought to Nagasaki on July 10, 1636 and subjected to torture by their Japanese captors for more than a year. These methods brought some of Ruiz’s companions to recant their faith. Lorenzo went through this agonizing punishment when he refused to renounce his faith. It was on September 23, 1637 that he began to undergo further torture. After two days he died from bleeding and suffocation. His body was cremated and the ashes thrown into the sea. http://mmdelrosario.hubpages.com/hub/saint-lorenzo-ruiz

COMMEMORATION Holy Guardian Angels October 2
In the Nicene Creed, we express belief in God as the “maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.” The tradition of the Church has always seen the angels as among those things “unseen”. The understanding of angels developed over many centuries. In the early Old Testament, often there is an ambiguity: uncertainty whether the “angel” in the story is, in fact, a separate creature or is actually God. In the later Old Testament, angels play a wider and clearly separate role, even being named, as with the archangels Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel. In the Middle Ages, philosophical theologians saw an appropriate symmetry in the view that while human beings are both material and spiritual, there are also those things which are material only, with no spirit, such as rocks; therefore, there must be those things which are spiritual only, with no matter, and these are, of course, the angels. In this narrative and philosophical tradition, the angels serve as messengers and agents, not separating God from people, but providing an additional means of communication and assistance from God. It is a natural step, then, to the belief that angels also serve as guardians and protectors, a tradition which goes back to our Lord himself, as in his comment in today’s Gospel: “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven.” Angelic guardianship is spiritual; they don’t save us from falling rocks or potholes in the road. But it is an ancient source of comfort that we are assisted in our spiritual growth and in our resistance to sin by these great spirits who even now see God face-to-face. D. E. Williams
