Saint Simon & Saint Jude | October 28, 2018 | 10:30 am
Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst; To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish;
To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 8:00 am Morning Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel 8:30 am Low Mass, Lady Chapel 9:15 am Coffee Hour, Bishops’ Room 10:30 am High Mass, Church 12:00 pm Coffee Hour, Bishops’ Room 12:30 pm Formation, Bishops’ Room 5:00 pm Evening Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel ______________________________________________________________________ This booklet is printed on recycled paper. Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection When we leave Mass, we ought to go out the way Moses descended Mount Sinai: with his face shining, with his heart brave and strong to face the world’s difficulties. Entrance Rite At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand. HYMN 577 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — God of Grace and God of Glory
God of grace and God of glory, on your people pour your power; now fulfill your church's story, bring its bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour, for the facing of this hour. Lo, the hosts of evil round us scorn your Christ, assail his ways. Fears and doubts too long have bound us; free our hearts to work and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days, for the living of these days. Cure your children's warring madness; bend our pride to your control; shame our wanton, selfish gladness, rich in goods and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, lest we miss your kingdom's goal, lest we miss your kingdom's goal. Set our feet on lofty places; gird our lives that they may be armoured with all Christ-like graces in the fight for liberty. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, lest we fail ourselves and thee, lest we fail ourselves and thee. 6 | HIGH MASS

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy. Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; let the earth hear the words of my mouth. May my teaching drop like the rain, my speech condense like the dew; like gentle rain on grass, like showers on new growth. For I will proclaim the name of the Lord; ascribe greatness to our God! The Rock, his work is perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God, without deceit, just and upright is he. Deuteronomy 32:1-4
Reader All
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.
O Lord, your word is everlasting; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness remains from one generation to another; you established the earth, and it abides. Antiphon By your decree these continue to this day, for all things are your servants. If my delight had not been in your law, I should have perished in my affliction. I will never forget your commandments, because by them you give me life. Antiphon I am yours; oh, that you would save me! for I study your commandments. Though the wicked lie in wait for me to destroy me, I will apply my mind to your decrees. I see that all things come to an end, but your commandment has no bounds. Antiphon Psalm 119:89-96

EPISTLE READING Reader
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians. Now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God. Ephesians 2:13-22

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, "I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me before it hated you. If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. Because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world - therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, 'Servants are not greater than their master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have sin. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. It was to fulfil the word that is written in their law, 'They hated me without a cause.' When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning." John15:17-27

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible Notes from the Clergy The DTES Heart of the City Festival began on Wednesday 24 October and runs through to Sunday 4 November. This is the 15th Annual Festival celebrating the rich and diverse cultural life of our neighbourhood, expressed in music and theatre, dance, written and spoken word, film and art. What wealth there is here in the midst of the challenges to daily living which are so often the focus of DTES news! I commend to you the Festival Programme (or go to heartofthecityfestival.com) to capture something of the excitement of what is being offered. It is good too that St James’ and some of our members have their place in the Festival: the Women’s Guild Bargain Sale; Open Church, with a guided tour and an organ demonstration; the All Souls’ Requiem; our hosting of “Call Mr. Robeson – A Life, with Songs”; the All Saints’ Sunday Mass; a tribute to the late Pat McSherry. It is good to see that St James’ is at the Heart of the Heart of the City! As we should be, we are rooted in our neighbourhood.
As many of you will be aware, after prayerful reflection and discussion, the Women’s Guild has decided that this past Friday’s Bargain Sale was the last. The challenge of sustaining the number of volunteers, the physical demands of preparation and the changing needs of the neighbourhood have all contributed to this decision. Whilst this brings to an end one particularly significant and longstanding work of the Guild, which was celebrated with flourish and style on Friday, the Women’s Guild will nonetheless continue its ministry of service, for which we are both delighted and very grateful.
Enjoy the Heart of the City Festival! Fr Kevin

PRAYERS FOR THE DEPARTED: ALL SOULS’ DAY HIGH MASS Fri. Nov. 2 at 6:30 pm On All Souls’ Day we give thanks for those who have departed this life. If you have names of loved ones that you would like to have read aloud during the prayers, please sign the sheet in the Narthex, or phone or email the Church Office by Mon. Oct. 29.
SOLEMN REQUIEM The Durufle Requiem will be sung on Fri. Nov. 2, All Souls’ Day, at 6.30 pm, and on Sun. Nov. 11, Remembrance Day, at 10.30 am. The St. James’ Choir is joined by the Vancouver organist David Poon in a presentation of Maurice Duruflé’s luminous Requiem (Op. 9). Using the Gregorian plainchant melodies of the Requiem, Duruflé created a harmonic garment which is both sumptuous and sober, a masterpiece of 20thcentury composition. FUNERAL PLANNING November, the month of remembering, All Saints’, All Souls’ and Armistice Day, is a timely reminder to us all of our own mortality, and of our responsibility to prepare ourselves spiritually and by ordering our affairs. For the sake of family & friends, it is important that we have a Will, and that we leave instructions regarding our preferred funeral arrangements. The Office has a form available for this purpose, and the Legacy booklet from the Diocese has a very helpful Checklist of things to bear in mind when preparing to make a Will. Copies are available today. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Can you help with distributing postcards for the Remembrance Day Mass? Please email Mother Lucy if you can help: lucy@stjames.bc.ca FORMATION SESSIONS This Fall we will be journeying through the Book of Acts and thinking about the church then, and what it can teach us as we reconsider who we are as the church today. CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS A long-standing tradition of Anglican churches is the rôle of Choral Scholar — a university student who receives a scholarship in exchange for singing in the choir. Over the past few years Choral Scholars have enriched our services, and has been made possible by a number of generous donations from individual parishioners. If you appreciate music, please consider supporting the Choral Scholarship programme. To do so online, go to https://stjames.bc.ca/donate, and specify 2435 Music Scholarship as to the purpose of your donation. Alternatively, you can use the donation envelope from the pew and write 2435 Music Scholarship on the envelope.

ORDER OF THE DIOCESE: INVESTITURE OF NEW MEMBERS Sat. Nov. 3, 10.30 am, Massey Theatre, New Westminster Receiving the ODNW: This year St. James' nominated Kelvin Bee to be the recipient of the Order of the Diocese of New Westminster (ODNW). Kelvin will receive the award on Nov. 3, 2018. Over the past ten years Kelvin has been an active member of St. James' and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Kelvin has worked with the St. James' leadership team over the years to guide the people of the parish to understand the church's past involvement with the Indian Residential school system, through his testimony and by encouraging the church to be active in the reconciliation process. In 2017 Kelvin, working with Fr. Matthew Johnson and the late Pat McSherry, applied for a grant from the Anglican Foundation to hold the first "Reconciliation Feast," where First Nations and Settler elders came together for a feast, to honor the people and the work of reconciliation that they have done together over the years. The feast was captured in a documentary which has been shared with the Anglican Church of Canada, in the hopes that other parishes will hold their own feasts. The witnesses and attendees of the feast received the gift of a scarf with the St. James' logo and a humming bird, an art piece by First Nations artist Ron LaRochelle from Haida Gwaii. Kelvin was flabbergasted to be nominated for the ODNW and remains surprised that given his experience in the residential school system, he has come to a place where he has friends who are clergy, and a church where he is considered a leader and is serving as a Trustee. Kelvin also expressed some trepidation about being a First Nations nominee, and will be supported by his family, parishioners, and the St. James' clergy on the day.
