Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection The heathen were without excuse, if they did not praise God, thank God. Nature itself crieth within us, that we owe ourselves, our very being, all that we are, and all that we have, all within us and without us, to Him Who made us, and all things for us, to use and to enjoy. And therefore nature itself crieth aloud within us, that we should love Him wholly, thank Him wholly, to Whom we owe our very being and all which maketh our being a joy to us. To Him we owe our whole mind and heart and soul and strength; therefore with our whole mind and heart and soul and strength which we owe to Him, we should praise Him. “When shall we cease to praise Him? When we cease to have from Him, for which to praise Him. And since He always blesses us, we must evermore bless Him, and His praise be ever in our mouth.” “What better,” says a father, “can we have in our hearts, and utter with our mouths than thanks be to God? Nothing can be said more briefly, or heard more gladly, understood more grandly, or done more fruitfully. Whence Christians were even mocked by scoffers, because they so often said, when they met one another, “Thanks be to God.” And yet if such should be the thanks of mere nature, what should be thanks of grace! If such be the thanks due that we are, that we live, that we behold heaven and earth, have mind and reason, memory and free-will, what, that we may live to God, that earth is for us, and heaven is ours, this fair earth is but a sojourning-place, where to gain heaven? What, when every thing beautiful in it, every thing which in it we love, is but a picture of some higher beauty and loveliness and love, in store for us if we love God? What, when not heaven alone or earth is ours, but the Father of heaven and earth, God Himself is ours, to be our own God, if we will, for ever and ever? And should we the less love God for this, and praise God for all this, because they are so common, because so many besides us have them? Nay, rather, we should the more bless God, and praise God, because so many besides us have them. In that ocean of joy, which there shall be in the world to come, we shall have the more joy, because so many whom we shall love, shall have the same or greater joy. Is it not a joy to us here, with the little love which we have, to see others whom we love, have the same joy as ourselves? Does it not so increase our joy, if we deeply love, that we then begin deeply to joy, when those whom our inmost hearts love, share our joy? And there, in heaven, we shall all so deeply love, that our deepest love here will be but a shadow of the lowest love there; and we shall love all, and so shall share the joy of all there with a more inward joy than here we share the joy of those whose joy is as our own. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy. When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, "Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us." When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, you shall make this response before the Lord your God: "A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labour on us, we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me." You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house. Deuteronomy 26:1-11

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. Know this: The Lord himself is God; he himself has made us, and we are his; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Antiphon Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; give thanks to him and call upon his Name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his faithfulness endures from age to age. Antiphon Psalm 100
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:4-9

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
When they found Jesus on the other side of the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?" Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal." Then they said to him, "What must we do to perform the works of God?" Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent." So they said to him, "What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" Then Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." They said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always." Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." John 6:25-35

Father, all-powerful and ever-living God. we do well always and everywhere to give thee thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord. We acknowledge thee as the Lord of all nations, the Creator of land, and sea, and sky, the Source of the wonders of nature and salvation. Through thy Word thou didst call all things into being, that thou mightst bestow on us thy love reflected in the vastness of the universe and the bounty of this earth. Thou didst place creation in our care, yet thou alone sustain all life with the gentle dew of thy Word and the life-giving breath of thy Spirit. Thy gifts of nature have not exhausted thy goodness, for the fullness of thy love is revealed in the sending of thy Son and the imparting of the Spirit. Our hearts are moved to thankful praise, and so we join the choirs of angels and saints: in proclaiming thy glory and saying:

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

Formation on Sundays THE LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE CHRISTIAN IMAGINATION OCTOBER 20 AND 27TH: EVERYMAN One way in which the life of Christ has been imagined is in English dramatic works. In the English morality plays that emerge in the late Middle Ages, Christ’s life is set as an example for His followers. The fifteenth-century morality play, Everyman, presents an allegory of the moral struggle all Christians face as their own qualities, good and bad, push and pull them toward Heaven or Hell. When Death summons Everyman to come and give account of his life in this world, Everyman asks Fellowship, Goods, and Knowledge, along with Strength, Beauty, and Discretion, to accompany him into the grave; all abandon him except Good Deeds. Everyman is us, we learn, as we listen to this didactic play. Over the next two Sundays we will rehearse Everyman in preparation for its dramatic reading at the Heart of the City Festival on November 2nd, at 3.00 pm.
