High Mass & Solemn Te Deum

The Most Holy Trinity | June 15, 2014 | 10:30 am

Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES  To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst;  To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;  To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;  To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. _______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 9:45 AM Rosary Prayers, Lady Chapel 10:30 AM High Mass 12:00 PM Mother’s Union Strawberry Tea, Parish Hall 12:30 PM Conformation/Re-affirmation/Reception, May Gutteridge Room 5:00 PM Evening Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel _______________________________________________________________________ On the front cover is of an icon painted in 1410 by the Russian Andrei Rublev. Its inspiration was the Biblical story of three angels who visited Abraham and Sarah near the great trees of Mamre. The angels are depicted in equal dignity, and thought to represent the triunity and equality of all three persons of the Holy Trinity. 2 | HIGH MASS

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Our Lord commanded us to baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. In baptism, then, we profess faith in the Creator, in the only-begotten Son and in the Gift which is the Spirit. For in God there is one Father from whom all things have their being; and there is one only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ through whom all things exist; and there is one Spirit, God’s gift to us who is in all. So all follow their due order according to the proper operation of each: one power from whom all things have come into being; one Son, through whom all things come to be; and one Gift who sustains us in perfect hope. Nothing is wanting in this flawless union: in Father, Son and Holy Spirit, there is an infinity of endless being, the perfect reflection of the divine image, and mutual enjoyment of the Gift. Christ taught us that God, being Spirit, must be worshipped in the Spirit, and he revealed to us just what freedom and knowledge, what boundless scope for adoration lies in the worship of God the Spirit when we pray in the Spirit. He described the purpose of the Spirit’s presence within us in these words: ‘I have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. It is to your advantage that I go away; if I go, I will send you the Advocate.’ And also: ‘I will ask the Father and he will give you another Counsellor to be with you for ever, the Spirit of truth. He will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine.’ Let us therefore make full use of this benefit, and seek for personal experience of this most important Gift. We receive the Spirit of truth in order that we might know the things of God. Consider how useless the faculties of our body would become if they are denied exercise. Our eyes cannot fulfil their task without light, either natural or artificial; our ears will not function without sound vibrations, and in the absence of any smell our nostrils are ignorant of their function. Not that these senses would lose their own nature if they were not used, rather, they demand, they require external stimulus in order to function. It is the same with God, unless the soul absorbs the Gift of the Spirit through faith, it lacks the light necessary for that knowledge. This unique Gift which is in Christ is offered in its fullness to every person. It is denied to none, and given to each in proportion to a person’s readiness to receive it. Its presence is the richer, the greater our desire to be worthy of it. This Gift will remain with us until the end of the world, and will be our comfort in the time of waiting. By the favours it bestows, it is the pledge of our hope for the future, the light of our minds, and the splendour that irradiates our understanding. – a reading from Hilary of Poitiers, On the Trinity, II, 1, 31, 33, 35, CCSL 62A, pp 67-72; ET based on NPNF vol. IX. pp 52, 61.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING

Reader

Be seated

A reading from the book of Genesis. In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. And God said, "Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day. And God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every

8 | HIGH MASS

kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it." And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. And God said, "Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth." And it was so. God made the two great lights - the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night - and the stars. God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. And God said, "Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky." So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind." And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." God said, "See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so. God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation. These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created. Genesis 1:1-2:4A

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES Over the years I have come to love the gesture of making the sign of the cross. It is a prayer action, which invokes the Trinity. In this one action we capture the essence of our Faith as witnessed in the creeds. It is a means of consecrating ourselves, at any moment in our day, to the greater glory of God – the Holy Trinity. Our whole being is in need of conversion, including our intellect. For me, at University, I was given the grace of insight, my intellect was enlightened, whilst listening to a lecture series by the Orthodox Bishop Kallistos. He was eminent Bishop and scholar who is best known for his books The Orthodox Church and The Orthodox Way. Whilst expounding on the Church’s faith in God as Trinity I understood the revealed truth that the very nature of God is a community. The heart of God is a relationship. This is dynamite for the intellect and our practical living of the faith. This sets us apart from all other religions. Here is Bishop Kallistos in his own words, from The Orthodox Way: “The Christian God is not just a unit but a union, not just unity but community. There is in God something analogous to ‘society’… God is

triunity: three equal persons, each one dwelling in the other two by virtue of an unceasing movement of mutual love.” Perichoresis (mutual indwelling) is the term in Greek which describes this dynamic life of God. Kallistos goes on to say: “The final end of the spiritual Way is that we humans should also become part of this Trinitarian coinherence or perichoresis, being wholly taken up into the circle of love that exists within God.” This makes so much sense to me. It sustains my faith. It challenges my faith. In all our relationships we are called to be ikons of the Trinity. And in so doing we participate in the life of the Trinity: "Each social unit – the family, the school, the workshop, the parish, the Church universal – is to be made an ikon of the Trinity. Because we know that God is three in one, each of us is committed irrevocably to a life of practical service, of active compassion."

A MESSAGE FROM JENNY, ST. JAMES' YOUTH WORKER I am so excited to have the opportunity to serve St. James’ in this new capacity. Over the next few months I will be in a season of learning, as I build relationships with the youth and young adults of St. James’ and the neighbourhood, learn from other groups and individuals working with this age group, and discover what resources are out that could bless this church. In the autumn, I will then take all I have learned and the relationships I have built, and lead a new set of programs for youth and young adults (entering grade 6 through age 30). I invite all youth and young adults, along with parents and any individuals who have a passion for this age group and may want to serve in some capacity, to please get in touch with me so I can learn from you! Ways to contact me: email scott.jennym@gmail.com; mobile 778-322-7967 or come find me at the noon mass on Wednesday and Fridays. And check out the new Facebook page: “St. James’ Anglican Church Youth and Young Adults”

QUOTE OF THIS WEEK “The final end of the spiritual Way is that we humans should also become part of this Trinitarian coinherence or perichoresis, being wholly taken up into the circle of love that exists within God.” Metropolitan Kallistos The Orthodox Way, Mowbray: Oxford, 1982 pp.33-34

7. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit. 8. The Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, and the Holy Spirit uncreated. 9. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Spirit incomprehensible. 10. The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Spirit eternal. 11. And yet they are not three eternals but one eternal. 12. As also there are not three uncreated nor three incomprehensible, but one uncreated and one incomprehensible. 13. So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, and the Holy Spirit almighty. 14. And yet they are not three almighties, but one almighty. 15. So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God; 16. And yet they are not three Gods, but one God. 17. So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Spirit Lord; 18. And yet they are not three Lords but one Lord.

DIDO’S “DID YOU KNOW?” 3. And the catholic faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; 4. Neither confounding the persons nor dividing the substance.

19. For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity to acknowledge every Person by himself to be God and Lord; 20. So are we forbidden by the catholic religion to say; There are three Gods or three Lords. From the Athanasian Creed http://www.ccel.org/creeds/ athanasian.creed.html

5. For there is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Spirit. 6. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit is all one, the glory equal, the majesty coeternal. THE THURIBLE | 29

COMMEMORATION Joseph Butler Bishop of Durham, Philosopher, 1752 June 16

Christians have always claimed that theirs was a “reasonable” religion, a religion so intellectually cogent that all thinking people should find it compelling. Up until the eighteenth century very few in Western Europe challenged this claim. Then a form of rationalism emerged, which quickly gained the initiative and forced Christian intellectuals onto the defensive. One of the Christian thinkers to address the rationalist challenge was a clergyman of the Church of England named Joseph Butler, who was made bishop of Bristol in 1738 and bishop of Durham twelve years later. A quiet man who never married, he devoted his life to study and his income to charity. His studies bore fruit in a series of tightly reasoned works, in which he developed a balanced description of human rationality and vindicated the reasonableness of the Christian religion. In so doing, Butler used a framework of ideas which often seems foreign to modern thought. But the Christian faith must be renewed in every generation, and defended in the language that each generation understands. And so we remember Joseph Butler today, because he did much to stem the ebb tide of faith in his own age. For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994

COMMEMORATION Bernard Mizeki Catechist in Rhodesia, Martyr, 1896 June 18

Bernard Mi-ze′-ki is the Anglican Protomartyr of Southern Africa. He began work as a catechist among the Mashona people of Zimbabwe in 1891. Five years later, when the Mashonas rose up against the British, Bernard had ample opportunity to escape. Instead, he chose to remain with his congregation. On the night of June 17, 1896, he was assaulted and mortally wounded by warriors from the village where he had his mission. He managed to crawl to a nearby hillside. Early the next morning, as Bernard’s wife and another woman approached his hiding place, they were frightened by an unearthly sound, “like many wings of great birds,” and by a dazzling light which moved toward the spot where Bernard lay. When the two women finally had the courage to go to him, Bernard’s body was gone without a trace. From that day to this, Anglicans from all over southern Africa have made pilgrimages to the site of his martyrdom, in order to offer their prayers and petitions in the house of so great a witness for Christ.
