A Reflection THE CREATOR GOD MADE goodness, not we: grant us, O Lord, to pursue it. God made truth, not we: grant us, Lord, to search it out. God made beauty, not we: grant us, Lord, to perceive it. God made love, not we: pour, Lord, thy love into our hearts more and more abundantly. With all these wonders thou dost dazzle our eyes and fill our hands. And each is inexhaustible; and all thou hast manifested before our eyes in Jesus Christ our Lord; and dost offer to us by the Holy Spirit. Yet more; thou madest life, not we: thou madest us, not we ourselves: in thee we live and move and have our being, without thee, we are not. And most; thou madest us for communion with thee; what thou hast offered, may we not refuse; what thou hast given, let us not throw away. Dear Lord, thou givest all; but askest all.
As the young king asked wisdom, do we ask faith to grow into thy goodness, into thy truth, thy beauty, thy love into THYSELF. My God, my Glory, Eric Milner-White, sometime Dean of York

Entrance Rite PRELUDE At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand. HYMN 326 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Bright the Vision That Delighted Bright the vision that delighted once the sight of Judah’s seer, sweet the countless tongues united to entrance the prophet’s ear.
Round the Lord in glory seated, cherubim and seraphim filled the temple, and repeated each to each the alternate hymn: “Lord, thy glory fills the heaven, earth is with its fullness stored; unto thee be glory given, holy, holy, holy Lord.” Heaven is still with glory ringing; earth takes up the angels’ cry, “Holy, holy, holy,” singing, “Lord of hosts, the Lord most high.” With his seraph train before him, with his holy church below, thus unite we to adore him, bid we thus our anthem flow:

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the book of Isaiah. In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory." The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: "Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!" Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: "Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out." Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I; send me!" Isaiah 6:1-8

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first ; all repeat it thereafter.
Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. Antiphon The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; the Lord is upon the mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice; the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendour. Antiphon The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon; He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox. Antiphon The voice of the Lord splits the flames of fire; the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe and strips the forests bare. And in the temple of the Lord all are crying, "Glory!" Antiphon The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king for evermore. The Lord shall give strength to his people; the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh - for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ - if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. Romans 8:12-17

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God." Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above." Nicodemus said to him, "How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, 'You must be born from above.' The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?" Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him." John 3:1-17

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY May the 25th is a significant marker for me on two counts: it is the third anniversary of my arrival in Canada to serve at St. James’; it is also the day on which the church commemorates the Venerable Bede, Priest, Scholar and Monk, who died in 735 AD at Jarrow in the northeast of England, and in whose footsteps, literally, I was also privileged to serve, celebrating Mass in the same 7th-century sanctuary where Bede himself would have stood. The longer I was in Jarrow, the more remarkable I discovered Bede to be. The monastery at Jarrow then had a great library, and during what is known as the Dark Ages of early Saxon times in England, Bede and the community kept the light of the Christian faith brightly burning. Bede himself never travelled far from Jarrow, but through correspondence and the travels of others he was in communication with scholars and religious communities across Europe. Indeed, the Codex Amiatinus, one of the earliest extant texts of the Latin Vulgate
Bible was transcribed in Jarrow under Abbot Ceolfrid. One of the greatest moments of my life is to have held this in my hands to read in the Laurentian Library in Florence, Italy: the script is beautifully written, and the intensity still of the colour of the illuminated pages astonishing. Bede wrote extensively on a broad spectrum of subjects: theology and biblical commentaries, of course, but also on science, nature and history, his History of the English Church and People being the major source for that period. He was always eager to explore and discover new things about God and God’s creation. I was in Jarrow at the turn of the millennium, when it was highlighted that Bede was largely responsible for our numbering the years from that of Christ’s birth. It was a privilege and a challenge to minister in Jarrow, to seek to proclaim the good news of the Gospel in a way which was faithful to the rich history and tradition personified

CORPUS CHRISTI High Mass for the Feast of Corpus Christi Thurs, May 31 at 6:30 High Mass for the Feast of Corpus Christi with outdoor Procession of the Blessed Sacrament, will be celebrated at St James'. Archbishop Skelton will be the preacher. Since the mid-thirteenth century the Thursday after Trinity Sunday has been observed in the West as a day of thanksgiving for the gift of the Blessed Sacrament in the life of the church. This observance has been restored to the Calendar of many Churches of the Anglican Communion, including our own, in the liturgical renewal of the last century. Known often by its shortened Latin name, Corpus Christi, it is the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. Of course we give thanks for the Institution of Holy Communion in Holy Week, on Maundy Thursday. Then, though, we are caught up in the solemn events of the Lord’s Passion, with the washing of the feet, the watch in the garden, and the betrayal of Jesus set before us in the context of the Last Supper. Corpus Christi gives us the opportunity to focus our thanksgiving on the sacramental presence of Christ in the life of the church, how we are joined together as the Body of Christ by our feeding on the Bread of Life and drinking from Christ the Vine, how we draw our life and strength from him, how we receive here the pledge and foretaste of the banquet of heaven. A traditional part of the celebration has been a Procession of the Blessed Sacrament, clergy and people together taking the consecrated host (in what is called a Monstrance, from the Latin “to show”: with them into the neighbourhood. This witnesses to the presence of Christ in the sacrament, of course, but its intent is more than that: it is a procession of witness to Christ present in the midst of God’s people, to Christ present in God’s creation, and to Christ’s love for all.
This year St James’, together with the DofNW Chapter of the Society of Catholic Priests, extends a warm invitation to people from across the diocese to join with our Bishop in this celebration and act of witness. RADICAL INCLUSION: How does it impact our brains/bodies, communities, faith? Thur. June 7 at 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm St. James’ Anglican Church If we were to ask people in the city of Vancouver whether today’s Christian church is a place of inclusion, many would likely say no. “Western” faith communities are grappling with how to move beyond the stereotype of a stuffy environment, lacking in diversity. If we truly desire to make the church a place where all are welcome, what needs to change? What does it look like to be radically inclusive, and how will this impact us as individuals and communities? Join St. James’ Anglican Church as we invite two hosts of The Liturgist Podcast, “Science Mike” McHargue and Hillary McBride, to explore this topic with us. Come expecting to tackle hard questions and have your fill of nerdy answers.
About "Science Mike" Mike McHargue (better known as "Science Mike") is an author, podcaster, and speaker focused on the science behind spiritual experiences. Mike lost his faith via atheism as an adult, but rediscovered God in cosmology and neuroscience—a journey that led to his life's mission: helping people reconcile their faith with modern science. Mike is a host and co-founder of The Liturgists. His book will be available for purchase at the event.

If income/cost is not a barrier for you and you'd like to subsidize the ticket cost of a lower-income attendee, please select the $45 ticket option. Thanks for your support. We believe removing cost barriers is a critical part of an inclusive event. THE THURIBLE | 31
