Welcome Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection The prayer of the first Christians was simply a reflection of the living Christ in their midst. It was prayer ‘in his name’; and by this, we mean not that a formula was added at the end of every petition but that in all their prayer they joined themselves to the prayer of Christ himself, and knew that it was his spirit which prayed in them. The best worship they could offer was simply his self-oblation in them. Praying in that Spirit, the Christian’s prayer is immersed in the ocean of the Son’s communion with the Father: ‘Praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God.’ And again, ‘Keep your watch with continuous prayer and supplication, praying the whole time in the Spirit. With constant wakefulness and perseverance you will find opportunity to pray for all the Christian brethren.’ ‘We do not even know how we ought to pray, but through our inarticulate groans the Spirit himself is pleading for us, and God who searches our inmost being knows what the Spirit mean, because he pleads for God’s own people in God’s own way.’ To live in prayer, therefore, is to live in the Spirit, and to live in the Spirit is to live in Christ. I am not saying that prayer is a means or a method which we have to use in order to have more of Christ in us or in order to be more fully possessed by the Spirit. I am saying something simpler and more fundamental: to live in Christ is to live in prayer. Prayer is not something you do; it is a style of living. It is living under the witness which the Spirit bears with our spirit that we are children of God. Such a witness lays upon us the awe-ful freedom of adult sonship. Prayer is our response to both the privilege and the responsibility whereby we cry Abba, Father! To engage in the mission of God, therefore, is to live this life of prayer; praying without ceasing, as St. Paul puts it, that is to say, sustaining a style of life that is focused upon God. This is indeed to engage in the mission of the Holy Spirit by being rather than by doing. To realize that the heart of mission is communion with God in the midst of the world’s life will save us from the demented activism of these days. John V. Taylor, The Go-Between God, London, 1973, pp.226-7.

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

All

Almighty God, thou hast exalted thine only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to thy kingdom in heaven. Mercifully give us faith to know that, as he promised, he abides with us on earth to the end of time; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts. One day, as we were going to the place of prayer, we met a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners a great deal of money by fortune-telling. While she followed Paul and us, she would cry out, "These men are slaves of the Most High God, who proclaim to you a way of salvation." She kept doing this for many days. But Paul, very much annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And it came out that very hour. But when her owners saw that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities. When they had brought them before the magistrates, they said, "These men are disturbing our city; they are Jews and are advocating customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to adopt or observe." The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates had them stripped of their clothing and ordered them to be beaten with rods. After they had given them a severe flogging, they threw them into prison and ordered the jailer to keep them securely. Following these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was an earthquake, so violent that the HIGH MASS | 9

foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were unfastened. When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted in a loud voice, "Do not harm yourself, for we are all here." The jailer called for lights, and rushing in, he fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them outside and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They answered, "Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. At the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire family were baptized without delay. He brought them up into the house and set food before them; and he and his entire household rejoiced that he had become a believer in God. Acts 16:16-34

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Revelation to John. "See, I am coming soon; my reward is with me, to repay according to everyone's work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end." Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they will have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by the gates. "It is I, Jesus, who sent my angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star." The Spirit and the bride say, "Come." And let everyone who hears say, "Come." And let everyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who wishes take the water of life as a gift. The one who testifies to these things says, "Surely I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints. Amen. Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20-21

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Jesus said, "I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me. I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them." John 17:20-26

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Formation on Sundays THE DOCTRINE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

On May 19, we will celebrate the great feast of Pentecost, which, in the Church, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. The account of Pentecost is found in Acts 2:1-21. In Christian faith, the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity. What are the roots of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit: in scripture, in tradition, and in reason or experience? How does the Holy Spirit relate to the other persons of the Trinity, the Father and the Son? What is the work of the Holy Spirit in us?

May 12: The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit Leader: Mother Jessica Schaap

This is the last Formation Session of the season. A new season will resume in September. Read all the talks about salvation from the last Formation series on the website under “Christian Education - Educational Resources.” Formation is on Sundays in the Bishops’ Room at 9:30am.

These sessions are an opportunity for us to gather as a community of faith, by God’s grace, to develop “an inquiring and discerning heart” (Rite for Holy Baptism, BAS p.160). And in the words of the baptismal covenant, it may be our response to the question: “Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship…”

St. James’ News & Announcements PLEASE HELP. RECTOR’S SABBATICAL REVIEW WITH ST. JAMES’ CHURCH, 2013 Dear Friends, At Parish Council (April 20) I shared a plan for a ‘sabbatical review’ with the Parish. Hard copies are now available in the Narthex and upon request (electronic format is available too) from the Parish Office. I would really welcome your participation at this early stage and in the coming months as the conversation unfolds. Please complete and return the feedback response form (green) to the Parish Office by Sunday, May 19th. Your support is much appreciated. Yours in Christ, Fr. Mark

If you are interested in reviewing the findings of my study leave so far I would be pleased to share the document and discuss it with you. Contact me at: 778.316.7941. / rector@stjames.bc.ca Fr. Mark HAPPY 105th BIRTHDAY DIANA! Special birthday wishes go out to Diana Brown. She turns 105 today!

UPDATE: RECTOR’S STUDY LEAVE WEEKS 1 & 2 I’ve spent the past two weeks reviewing service registers, Annual reports, minutes of Vestry and Trustees, and editions of Cornerstone and PAX. So far I have constructed: a timeline of the provision of all clergy and staff for this period; a narrative timeline of developments in liturgy, pastoral care, vision and mission, governance, strategic direction and physical resources; charts and graphs which describe - attendance at various liturgies, membership, sacraments celebrated and our finances. Most of this data will require further analysis. It is being created to help us update the Parish Profile and to enable us to better understand our history in order that we might faithfully look to our future. Next week, I am interviewing a sample of seven parishioners to test the resources which have been created for a consultation. This study leave is phase one of my sabbatical review with the Parish. (Copies of the proposal for the sabbatical review may be obtained from the Parish Office.) 26 | HIGH MASS

Leaving A Legacy Many of us would like to leave something behind to ensure that the St. James’ we know will continue for many years, but as retirees we don’t see how that is possible. By using Canada Revenue’s generous tax treatment of charitable gifts, it is possible to increase giving, reduce income taxes and increase your own annual income now, while still leaving a legacy through your will. After High Mass at 12:30 on May 26 there will be a presentation by a Certified Financial Planner in the May Gutteridge Room. Ed Fidler will explain how the tax laws can work in your favour when you plan ahead. A light lunch will be provided. It would be appreciated if you would notify the office that you plan to attend, but that isn’t strictly necessary – just come and listen. Reece Wrightman People’s Warden
