THE WINDOW IN MEMORIAM Occasionally, as a congregation, we lose someone whose presence in and meaning for the church has been unusually meaningful. As I think over the past fifteen years, I could name a number of persons no longer with us who fall into that category. We are richer for their friendship and service; we are poorer for their passing. I cannot help but believe that Jeanette Houpt is one of these special people.

Winstanley Baptist Church did a good day’s work when they called Jim and Jeanette to serve here. Jim, of course, served long and well on the church staff, and Jeanette faithfully supported and ministered alongside him.

only a handful of them praying for me, I would want her to be one. She loved the people of this church and beyond, and she loved God’s Kingdom. Beside that, in the years after Jim’s staff service at Winstanley, she and Jim, generally behind the scenes, have served all kinds of folks in all kinds of ways. While Jeanette’s prayer ministry has been profound, her ministry to others has been no less profound. All of which leads me to one question. Considering everything that Jeanette has done and how we have come to depend on her, who will be next to minister as she has done?

But Jeanette served in her own ways. That she was a wonderful encourager may be near the top of the list, but her prayer life, her love for missions, and her personal interest in the lives of so many of us mattered greatly, too.

I don’t dare ask who would replace her, for that is neither a good question nor a possibility. I simply wonder who among us will demonstrate the prayer concern, the passion and love, and the service for the Kingdom that Jeanette has.

As I have thought about it the past couple of days, I have decided that, of the people I have known in four decades of ministry, if I could have

What It Means To Be A Deacon . . . I was asked to serve as a deacon at Winstanley over 30 years ago. I was not sure that I was qualified to be a deacon. After discussions with and encouragement from Pastor Wendell Garrison and members of the selection committee I agreed to serve. Over the years I have had the chance to serve in a variety of ways. I was Sunday School director for a number of years. When we started the deacon family ministry plan I became a part of it. Through this plan I have had the opportunity to serve different church families in various ways. Another area in which I have been able to serve is by participating in mission projects and mission trips. Probably the most rewarding experience I have had was in helping build the Williams family home. The chance to bond with a group of fellow Christians in doing this helped me grow spiritually. To me being a deacon means to serve God, my church family and my pastor. I continue to appreciate the chance to serve. Jim Newton
