Greetings from the Agronomy Team, Through a combination of factors, we are seeing some course conditions this summer that are not what we have all come to enjoy at Winchester. As such, we hope to address some of the questions and comments we have received regarding current golf course conditions. As is frequently seen, there has been a cumulative effect, some factors were planned and within our control, others came from beyond our reach. It is absolutely our desire to provide a golf course that you enjoy and are proud to call home, as well as one that is moving forward in a positive direction for the future. At the beginning of this season we developed a plan of action to combat the intrusion of Poa annua on our golf course. Although we will always have some Poa on property, our objective is to preserve the bentgrass putting surfaces for as long as possible. Poa annua is the only turfgrass that exists on every continent and Winchester is located in a region where it gains the competitive advantage over ryegrass and bentgrass for 7 months of the year. The summer months provide the best opportunity to suppress the growth, seed production, and overall health of this undesirable turfgrass species. The combination of a strong growth regulation program and high temperatures has significantly impacted the population of Poa annua on our fairways and approaches. While successful in eliminating patches of Poa annua, an unfortunate side effect has been areas on our fairways that are not optimal; leaving portions pocketed and devoid of turfgrass. In the long term this reduction will benefit our course as we aim to reestablish ryegrass back into these locations. It is, however, unlikely to achieve successful ryegrass germination until soil temperatures decrease during mid to late September. Ryegrass performs very well in the shoulder months and off season and while capable of surviving the warm summer climate of this region, does not thrive when sustained soil temperatures increase above 75°. As is seen with all cool season turfgrasses, the root system diminishes between June and September leaving plant tissue more susceptible to stress factors such as heat and traffic. The month of July has been more than 3° hotter on average which further impacts the root structure. Below is a quick comparison of weather data from 2016 and 2017: The teeing ground at our practice facility also faced a significant amount of stress this summer. After consulting our Vice President of Agronomy we are optimistic that future agronomic strategies can improve conditions this fall and during the 2018 summer season. Going forward we will be overseeding these surfaces heavily in both the spring and fall to increase turf density. Three annual deep core aerifications in conjunction with soil amendments and fertilizer applications to encourage plant health will aid in evening the tee surface and retaining ryegrass through the summer. Another initiative for this season was to aggressively treat goosegrass and dallisgrass intrusion. We are happy to announce the herbicide trials have been very successful at controlling these weeds, which had infested the practice tee and the fairway on hole 1 in previous years. We will be expanding this treatment area over the next few weeks to remove these summer annual weeds from teeing surfaces throughout the golf course. As expected, it did create an eyesore in the treated areas, but also as planned we are already seeing healthy ryegrass growing back from beneath the weed canopy. Like every golf course, one of our ongoing projects is making routine repairs and updates to our irrigation and drainage systems. Every day our team is in the field examining irrigation coverage, replacing failing components, and discovering opportunities to improve upon our existing system. While this is a routine practice for every course, when these components are found to be in need of replacement during periods of excessive heat, it is not uncommon to see areas experiencing noticeable heat stress, especially in a cool season ryegrass turf stand. One benefit to this summer’s heat has been its positive affect on #8 fairway. As the soil saturation levels in this area improved, you have likely seen that we’ve begun exploratory work on our drainage lines. With the amount of rain we received this winter, we expect that some drainage lines are in need of repair and will be working on this for the remainder of the summer and fall season. Fortunately though, we’ve now been able to mow this area at more normal heights and fewer tee shots are embedding as compared to earlier in the season. We will continue to mark areas as Ground Under Repair as appropriate, but we are just as happy as you to see this fairway drying out. We understand that the aesthetics of a golf course is as important to the experience as the playability and course conditioning are. Maintaining course conditions is a process and although we are in a more challenging stage, it will become a thing of the past. Our team is excited to tackle the issues we uncover and make improvements throughout this wonderful property. Best regards,
Daniel Cruse Golf Course Superintendent
