Patriot Golf Weekend Sept. 1st - 4th

Greetings from the Agronomy Team,

We want to readdress a few topics from our previous update and provide information about steps we have taken to improve golf course conditions during the month of August. As we previously shared, the combination of control measures we applied to hinder Poa annua, the extreme heat, and challenges with irrigation coverage and components have led to significant Poa reduction in portions of our fairways, leaving them pocketed and devoid of turfgrass. During the first few weeks of August we spent many hours auditing our irrigation system, performing repairs and adjustments, and updating the programming in our central irrigation computer. Our goal was to reduce unnecessary variables in our computer’s irrigation run time calculations, while also making certain that what exists in the field is accurately reflected within our control system. As you may have noticed in the last few weeks there were many areas around the course that seemed overly wet, this saturation was intentional, although certainly frustrating as great shots were occasionally interrupted by plugged lies and muddy golf balls. As the programming changes took effect we immediately experienced areas of acute saturation, these spots were noted daily and adjusted until proper irrigation timing was achieved. As days went on we began discovering new saturated areas around sprinklers which were regularly running just a few minutes too long. Every day our team is inspecting sprinkler performance and making adjustments to improve irrigation uniformity, but please know this is a lengthy process on a system with nearly 2000 irrigation heads. Although Mother Nature will have the final say, we are hoping by mid-September to begin seeding ryegrass into larger bare spots in fairways and the teeing ground at our practice facility. Last year the golf course was closed for 7 days during fall aerification and interseeding. This year, we chose to only impact one and a half normally open days for greens aerification, similar to the spring schedule, and since the interseeding process is minimally disruptive to play we have elected to perform this task while the course is open.

This spring we experimented with a new variety of ryegrass on holes 2, 7, and 11. These areas did not grow in as dense as we anticipated and still have not reached our desired level of quality. We learned a lot during the first trial, and we are happy to see a significant reduction in bentgrass populations on holes 7 and 11. Recently, we began herbicide treatments on these areas, which is the second phase of testing we planned for these conversion trials and we remain confident that continuing to explore this new ryegrass variety is the right move for Winchester. "We continue to explore the existing drainage network on hole 8. During our excavation we uncovered five failed drain lines and four sources of water seeping through rock fractures about two feet below the surface. While we plan to utilize some of the existing drainage we are also developing a new layout to capture the water as close to the source as possible. Access points into the drainage system will be added for routine cleaning and all drain lines will be traceable so that if a repair is needed in the future we can quickly isolate the location." We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate through the final weeks of this challenging summer heat. As the fall season approaches, and weather patterns change, cool season turfgrass recovery will improve and we should witness restored density and turf coverage on all our playing surfaces. See you on the course!

Best regards, Daniel Cruse Golf Course Superintendent
