Greetings from the Agronomy Team, October has been a busy month as we pushed hard to promote turfgrass recovery after the record breaking heat of this past summer. We have applied over 10,000 pounds of seed throughout the golf course and are now building a list of areas to be replaced with sod. In addition to greens aerification and ryegrass recovery efforts, we are performing drainage projects before the rain begins. After the installations on hole 8 are complete we will begin building a new system from the approach to the fairway exit on hole 3. Greens aerification went very well this fall. Apart from a couple frosty mornings we have had excellent growing conditions during this recovery period. Today marks two weeks from the completion of this important agronomic process and we should be close to full recovery by the end of next week. On Tuesday, we top-dressed the greens to refill depressions on the putting surfaces. Keeping the holes full of sand is important to allow the lateral growth of bentgrass to fill in the open holes. The agronomy team has been working steadily on drainage projects for hole 8. We are excited to share that the new drainage network in the landing zone has successfully produced drier fairway conditions than has been experienced on this hole at any time over the last year. We grassed this area yesterday except for the gravel pathway of the main drain. We chose to leave this area exposed so that if access to the pipe is needed during the winter we can do so without disrupting the playing surfaces. At this time the fairway on hole 8 is in acceptable condition to play the ball as it lies. Areas containing gravel, new sod, or places actively being repaired may still be played as G.U.R. The existing drainage system to the right of the green, much like the old fairway drainage network, was plagued with failed drain lines. All existing pipe has been flushed clean and will be incorporated into the new drainage structure being installed towards the end of this week. Because of the proximity to the green we have elected to grass this area completely after installation. Over the last 20 years, the vegetation surrounding our property has matured significantly and in some cases impacted golf course infrastructure. Trees in this region have withstood years of drought by developing expansive root systems to capture water, unfortunately, at the expense of our cart paths. To reduce the sometimes abrasive cart ride we have begun shaving down concrete panels showing significant heaving. You will find completed areas like this on holes 1-8. Please note that as weather and traffic wear on the newly exposed concrete surface any color differentiation will fade. This process, as well as partial panel replacement, will continue through the winter months.
The practice tees have been a topic of discussion for a while now. It has been a test of patience and we greatly appreciate your understanding during this time. Although the recovery has been slow we are now seeing a large amount of germination in the remaining bare spots. As soon as possible we will shift play back to the top tee and begin work to establishing a dense turfgrass canopy on the lower teeing ground. We hope you enjoy the beautiful fall weather and we look forward to seeing you on the course!
Best regards, Daniel Cruse Golf Course Superintendent
