Good To Know
Dehydration - The Role of Water The body needs water every day, more than any other nutrient to:
Regulate normal body temperature. Sweat evaporates from the skin to remove excess heat from the body resulting in water loss. Support alertness The human brain is 85% water: Keeping it hydrated is necessary for proper function. Minor dehydration can lead to headaches, irritability, impaired concentration and fatigue. Carry nutrients and waste products throughout the body. Water removes impurities through the lymphatic system, intestines and kidneys. It also aids in proper digestion by preventing constipation by adding moisture to stools and fluid to the colon. Lubricate and cushion. Water around joints protects from wear and tear and can help reduce joint pain. Maintain skin elasticity by hydrating from the inside out.
Dehydration can occur when too much water is lost from the body and not enough replaced. The American Heart Association recommends drinking at least eight to ten 8oz glasses of water day depending on diet, activity, environmental temperature and humidity. To keep the body well hydrated water is the beverage of choice needed to maintain a healthy body, a clear mind and balance of the body’s internal systems.
