THE WINCHESTER

An adventurous group of believers at The Camp Church Content provided by The Camp of Faith Church

Meet The Camp Church The Camp of Faith Church, 635 Double Church Road, is an adventurous group of believers. We are a part of the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia. We believe that God’s Holy Word is truth and is relevant for today. It is a message of hope, a hope that every human needs. In this message we put our confidence. At Easter many are contemplating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. At The Camp we celebrate this resurrection. The resurrection of Christ our Lord is what makes our Christian faith real. Without the resurrection we have no hope, without the resurrection we have no power. This hope is a beyond-the-grave kind of hope. When we believe it, when we receive it, it gives us as God’s children the promise of resurrection. With that we have the promise of eternity in heaven with God the Father. Jesus is the Savior to all men. At The Camp we celebrate this resurrection every Sunday all year long! It is our desire to share that resurrection hope with those in our community and further.

Grow In Your Faith At The Camp we have a weekly discipleship process to help us grow in our faith. We take this process seriously and work faithfully serving our Lord throughout the week making this walk with Jesus and with this group of Christ-followers much more than just a Sunday thing. We consider our members as family. We love each other, we pray for each other, we encourage and correct each other, according to God’s Word. We start the week with Sunday worship centered on sound Bible teaching. Pastor Trey teaches from the Bible in an expository fashion which means he uses the Bible as it is written in passages and teaches what

THE WIN-

it meant when it was written and how it is power and truth for us today.

Build Up Other Believers We celebrate the resurrection each Sunday morning at 10:45 with contemporary worship music. We have a Bible-based children’s programs and participatory adult classes that meet at 9:30 on Sunday morning. We are a casual bunch of believers with delicious snacks and hot coffee waiting for you as you arrive. We continue our discipleship process with mid-week small groups where strong, godly relationships and accountability are formed and nurtured. At The Camp leaders encourage and equip parents to promote strong families and godly homes. The final part of our weekly discipleship process includes reaching our friends and neighbors with the Good News about Jesus Christ.

Reach The World As a church our goal is to radically church everyone in arms reach. We are an energetic fun loving group of believers that like to take the “trail” which is what we call missions. When we say missions, we mean fun! We enjoy engaging our community. We host outreach activities including community block parties, local parades and door-to-door evangelism. This ministry is the heartbeat of The Camp. Our goal is to spread the message that we serve a God that is seeking to save those that are lost. It is our prayer to be His hands and feet to reach people, sharing His message of salvation. We hope that if you are searching for answers about God, if you want to learn about life and living according to God’s will and purpose that you would visit us at The Camp. We would love to have you.

An Easter message from Grace Downtown of Winchester Content provided by Grace Downtown of Winchester

The Apostle John certainly did not know on that Friday what we know today. He didn’t know that the tragedy on Good Friday (it wasn’t even called “Good Friday” yet) would be Sunday’s victory. John wrote many years later that the lot of them still “hadn’t understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead” (John 20:9). That’s why what John did on Saturday is so amazing. Of course, we really don't know much about Saturday; there are no verses to read, no history to glean, no wisdom to share. What we do know is this: When Sunday came, John was still in Jerusalem. Jesus was dead. Gone. It was over. Locked up in a borrowed tomb, guarded by Roman Centurions. John’s hope and friend and future were buried deep. But John didn’t leave. Why? Was he waiting for the resurrection? Nope. What he labored for and with for three long years died on the cross at Calvary. He certainly wasn’t expecting the Sunday wonder. So why then? Why was he still in Jerusalem? I would have left. You probably would have, too. Why not John? You’d have to figure that the same ones who crucified Christ would have come after him too, right? After all, the crowds that cried out “Hosanna” the previous Sunday loved the crucifixion on Friday and those Pharisees might call for more. So why didn't John get out of town?

4

WHERE WE

THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 2018

Maybe the answer was practical; maybe he was honoring Jesus’ dying wishes by taking care of His mother. Or maybe he just didn’t have anywhere else to go. Could be he didn’t have any money or energy or direction … or all of the above. Or maybe he lingered because he loved Jesus. To some, Jesus was a miracle worker. To others, Jesus was Rabbi. To still others, Jesus was the hope of Israel. But to John, Jesus was his friend. You don’t abandon a friend — not even when that friend is dead. John stayed close to Jesus. John had a habit of this. He was close to Jesus in the upper room. He was close to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was at the foot of the cross at the crucifixion, and he ran to the tomb Sunday. Did he understand Jesus? Nope. Was he glad Jesus did what he did? Nope. But did he leave Jesus? Nope. No way. No how. What about you? Are you in John's position today? Is it “Saturday” in your life, meaning somewhere between yesterday's tragedy and tomorrow's triumph? Jesus is your friend and He wants you to be His. He loves you more than you could even know even if you don’t know Him. Remember, John stayed in Jerusalem. And because he

stayed on Saturday, he was around on Sunday to see the miracle. Maybe you’re one of those folks who only go to church on Christmas and Easter. Maybe you don’t even like going because of the “looks” you get when you walk in the door. Come out this Easter Sunday for a new experience with Jesus, with church, with people. “Come as you are” is who we are and you will receive no judgment, no pressure, and no “looks.” Four Easters ago, we of Grace Downtown of Winchester had our first service in the back of a bar. With 40 people (now that’s a nice Biblical number!) Pastor Brad Hill started something of a revolution that has changed the lives of many all because of Jesus Christ. This Easter we have our first service in our new 7,200 square foot facility at 35 E. Jubal Early Drive, Winchester. “The Church in the bar, ain’t moved far.” Come out and see for yourself how God has moved in the lives of so many. Come and see how faith and hope and love and grace transforms and renews. Come and see how a church family grows and laughs and loves. But most importantly come out to meet or renew your friendship with the only One that matters, Jesus Christ.

Celebrate His resurrection at Advent Lutheran Church Content provided by Advent Lutheran Church Pastor Porter and the members of Advent Lutheran Church in Winchester greet you in Name of the Lord Jesus Christ! Our congregation is a member of the North American Lutheran Church (NALC) and we stress Scriptural fidelity, the classical moral tradition of the Christian Church, and congregational involvement in proclaiming the Gospel of God’s grace to sinners. We welcome all who come in their need, seeking to learn about and serve the Lord Jesus Christ with body, mind, and soul. At Advent, you will find reverent Services of Word and Sacrament, engaging Christian education, and regular works of service to our local communities and beyond. With the great Easter Season approaching, we invite you to come and prepare for the Resurrection of our Lord as we observe the time of Lent. In the Lenten period, we are focused on two things: our great need for the saving Person of Jesus Christ, and learning the way in which He has saved us

Working and worshipping together at Macedonia United Methodist Church Content provided by The Macedonia United Methodist Church Macedonia United Methodist Church is a great church family. Yet with assets galore, we can be just as messed up as any other family, maybe even yours. That is why we can work and worship together. This church has everything necessary to catch glimpses of the best of humanity, experience love in its purest forms, and to bring out the best in you as you help others. Whole families can take part in God’s work here and know that your children will grow and be safe here. Family members don’t always agree on the decisions they must make together. Though this church family doesn’t claim to have all of the right answers we do try to work through the questions that will bring us to a place of understanding and unity. Taking a serious look at the difficulties of life and find the solutions to those troubles is what families do. We try to be the kind of family where each person can fit into an experience with the Divine. It’s not unusual for churches to say, “All welcome”, but it’s rare to find a church, or a family, that seems to truly mean it. Even though we want to be the kind of church where everyone we meet suddenly finds their place in the group, we aren’t there yet. Our human frailties can get in the way of our best intentions; but

sometimes others recognize the connecting point that we are all human and imperfect. In these days where we are so connected that a thought can go around the world in the blink of an eye, we need to be connected within our community like family and the church ought to be a place that this can happen. We’ve got to connect with each other face to face, and appreciate our differences, embrace our uniqueness and celebrate our unity. At this church, like many of our families we aren’t there yet, but we are trying and we will go forward in this endeavor. The Macedonia family struggles with issues such as how to interpret the Bible, particularly around the issue of human sexuality. We wonder if everything in the Bible can be taken literally. Is everything in the Bible true like we understand truth today? Many groups have trouble coming together when there are vast differences in the members of that group in regards to personal finances, appropriate behavior in group settings, preferred music, sermon style, the ways we articulate our understanding of God, whether or not we really believe in God and why do we have to be saved by Jesus or saved from ‘what’ to ‘what’? Maybe the question that keeps us apart is “who holds the truth?” Who is the one who interprets what is true and who

left them in charge? If two or more are gathered and read the same quote in the Bible and have interpretations of meaning that do not agree, how do you know who is right? These are just some of the struggles our church family has, which may be struggles you have experienced. Working together to solve the problems of our community will bring us to recognize what is important. Folks don’t need to agree on a political party in order to help people have what they need. Folks don’t have to be the same age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or speak the same language to be friends, overcome bullying in our school, and work to insure every child gets an education that helps them succeed. Nor do we all have to claim the same path to God in order to respect our neighbors, protect each member of the community and take the personal responsibility of doing our best to care for ourselves, family and neighbor as a way of loving God. Let’s get together to overcome our differences, strengthen our best qualities and make our community an even better place for all families to live. If you don’t have all the answers and don’t know all of life’s truths, please visit the Macedonia United Methodist Church family that we can work together to bring out the very best in us all.

Get to know us at Emmanuel United Methodist Church Content provided by the Rev. Barry L. Burkholder, Emmanuel United Methodist Church The vision statement of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Stephenson is “Serving God by sharing His love and word to cultivate disciples of Jesus Christ.” As a faith community our purpose is to strive to make that vision a reality. Scripture tells us that Jesus drew people to him by meeting their needs, treating them with love and compassion, and exemplifying that very love by sacrificing himself for the salvation of the world. Emmanuel strives to share that good news of salvation by welcoming our community, meeting their needs as our resources are available, nurturing them in Scripture and faith traditions and encouraging them to participate in our ministries. One of the more familiar acts of compassion for which Jesus is known is feeding the multitudes. While Emmanuel never claims to feed 5,000 at a sitting, on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, we serve a meal open to everybody in our community at no cost. In addition, on the last Sunday of almost every month, before worship, our men serve breakfast to anyone who desires to come. (Rather than serving breakfast the last Sunday in March, our men will serve breakfast at the end of our Sunrise Service on Easter — see our ad on page 5 for the time.) Emmanuel United Methodist Church desires to provide opportunities for people to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Struggling to know God’s will for our lives can be a challenging often troubling, sometimes discouraging endeavor. The Bible reminds us in several places that it’s not a task to try to take on by ourselves. In fact, the Bible doesn’t speak anywhere about being a “lone Christian.” From the time of the first 12 disciples, Christianity has been a group experience. Probably the most familiar and the most important way for a church to touch its community is its weekly worship service. Our worship services at Emmanuel are centered on Biblical texts. We strive to make those texts come alive for our worshipers by relating them to our lives today. Our style of worship is mostly traditional with a few surprises thrown in every now and then. Many of our folks have an opportunity to assist in the worship service. We have choral and bell choirs, both of which are always looking for new members. Some of our people also participate by reading scripture lessons. And on varying Sundays, we have “You Time,” an opportunity for people in the pews to select a favorite hymn, Scripture Reading, or to tell about how God has blessed their lives. And for many worship is a time for quietly enjoying fellowship with God. Our worship services are informal. People can feel comfortable whether in suit and tie, slacks and shirt, or in t-shirt and jeans. In addition to worship, Emmanuel offers diverse opportunities to be a part of making the church’s vision real. There are different groups within our church that strive to share God’s word and God’s love encouraging others to become disciples as well. There are groups reaching out to determine community needs and finding ways to meet those needs. Other groups seek ways to share the mission and vision of Christ with our surrounding community. People endeavor to find ways our church can contribute to worldwide mission efforts. Classes encourage the study of the Bible and of Christian living. And there are fellowship groups for children, youth, families, and senior citizens. A Worship Committee undertakes to make worship a more inspiring and compelling experience. Perhaps, you are looking for a faith community — or perhaps you’ve been wondering what church “is all about.” Perhaps you at one time were an active member of a church but have been away for a while. Perhaps life has dealt you a difficult blow and you are trying to make sense of it all. We welcome you to come visit us. Get to know us. Allow us to get to know you. As the man on TV says, “There are no obligations.” Who knows? If you like us, you may even want to be part of us and help us to “Serve God by sharing his love and word to cultivate disciples of Jesus Christ.”
