Richard Leight of Frederick County is the vice president of the Frederick County Fair and is shown inside the J. Fred Thwaite 4-H Livestock Show Arena at the fairgrounds recently.
CLEAR BROOK — The 2019 Frederick County Fair, which runs from July 29 to Aug. 3, will be free on the first night. “We are not charging anyone to get into the fair on Monday night,” said fair reporter Mary Jane Leight. “It’s just giving back to the community, getting people out and interested in the fair. If they come one night, they might come another night. You just never know.” Other wise, admission is $7 for ages 12 and older, $3 for ages 6-11 and free for children under 5. Fair passes for the week are available for $20 for adults and $10 for children. Gates open at the fairgrounds, located at 155 Fairgrounds Road in Clear Brook,

at 4 p.m. July 29-Aug. 2 and 3 p.m. Aug. 3. The fair’s most popular event, the Monster Truck Show, is set for 7:30 p.m. July 30 at the Grandstand. Another popular event, the Demolition Derby, takes place at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 2 and 7 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Grandstand. Carnival rides and concessions open at 6 p.m. July 29-Aug. 2 and 5 p.m. Aug. 3. A $20 pass is available nightly for unlimited rides. The amusements are being provided by Inners Shows of Franklinton, N.C. About 10 food vendors have signed up so far, according to Leight, but a final tally won’t be known until fair week. In the past, vendors have offered typical fair food such as corn dogs, kettle corn, fried desserts and lemonade.

Leight said the fair is always “at the mercy of the weather,” and that last year’s attendance was down as a result of frequent rainstorms. Two years ago, the fair had a weekly attendance of about 35,000. She said she “wouldn’t even begin to venture a guess” on last year’s attendance, adding that the low turnout due to rain was “not a good evaluation of the fair.” “There were just sheets of water,” Leight said about last year’s event. “I know some people came in and turned around and left immediately.” The fair is organized by the Frederick County Fair Association, which is comprised of volunteers. According to Leight, there are about 25 volunteers who are “very active” in organizing the event. Last year, about 200 volunteers helped out during fair week with set up JEFF TAYLOR/THE WINCHESTER STAR and parking. School: LFCC 4-H Club: Frederick County Livestock FFA Club: James Wood Show animal: Hoss (Randy) I have been showing cattle for six years now. I was raised on a farm and have a love for all animals. I always seem to bond with my cattle the most. This year is no different, my steer is my baby. The life lessons and experiences showing have given me can never be duplicated or replaced. Hoss and I look forward to seeing you at the fair.
Berkeley Anna Frank, 17 School: Willow Academy 4-H Club: Frederick County Livestock Show animal: Hereford Our family has been involved in the fair since I was young. My earliest memories are fun times with friends in the rabbit and poultry barn. The Frederick County Fair is a wonderful time of gathering and celebrating the projects of the 4H and FFA youth. The youth of our county are incredibly blessed to have support of local families and businesses. We learn to interact and create lifelong relationships with our supporters. In my show career, I have met many along the way who are very generous to share knowledge and help others. I believe this is the most important aspect of 4H.

School: Robert E. Aylor Middle School 4-H Club: Frederick County Livestock FFA Club: Aylor Middle I have been showing livestock for five years. I will show lambs, hogs, and a heifer this year. I feed, water, exercise and train my animals daily. I train my pigs to keep their heads up while walking. I work on setting up my lambs. I enjoy the hard work of getting ready to show animals. I look forward to selling my animals at the sale. Thanks to my previous buyers: Rocky Keplinger Repair Service, HN Funkhouser, Marker-Miller Orchards, Bad Kettle Farm, Kim and Jim Huffman, Mrs. and Mr. Sutphin, Ridgerunner Container Service, and CFC Farm and Home Center.
I have shown lambs three years and pigs one year. Twice a day I walk, feed, water, and practice with my animals. I watch for health issues, and monitor their weights. I love spending time with my pig, Barbie, who loves marshmallows and rolling in the dirt. I enjoy working with my lambs. Along with learning about animals, showing them has let me meet new people. A big thank you to my previous buyers: The Huffmans, Keplinger Repair Service, Antietam Tractor, Shockley Auctioneering, and H.N. Funkhouser. Their support allows youth to continue to show at the fair.

In addition to the Frederick County Fair, I exhibit beef cattle, hogs, sheep, and goats at other shows around the country. Our show animals get special care and we spend a lot of time training them. School: Robert E. Aylor Middle School 4-H Club: Frederick County Livestock Show animal: Prince Frank (steer), Remmy (goat), Spartan and Checkers (lambs) I am showing one steer, two lambs, and one goat. This is my third year showing animals. Showing animals takes a lot of work. I feed my animals twice a day, and also exercise them, and practice walking, and setting them up like I would in a show. I also write letters to potential buyers, keep record books, and make sure my animals stay healthy. I have learned so many important skills and have made many friends by showing animals.

It is an exciting experience that I wish I had started sooner in life. Getting lambs ready for a show takes a lot of work and responsibility. I’m responsible for their daily feeding and watering. I have to wash them and keep them clean. I have to put them up on a special stand to fluff up the hair on their legs. I also have to halter break them which means to get them to use a halter and to walk well without it. I invite you to come down to the Frederick County Fair July 29-Aug. 2 to see how hard the fair kids have worked on their animals.
