Extreme Drawing: Mark & Movement Studio This art course will ask students to examine and challenge the notion of what drawing can be through exploratory and experimental investigations with traditional and non-traditional drawing materials and activities. Working with fun and open-ended prompts and game-like strategies, students will generate, organize, compose, pattern, plan, model, design, execute, and possibly destroy art work as an exploration of drawing. We will spend most of our time in the studio drawing, imagining, and creating, but will take time to venture off campus during the week to visit (and shop!) at the Center for Creative Reuse and short visits to local galleries. Process over product, group collaboration, brainstorming, improvisation, body movement, and ideation integration will be encouraged: all of which could very well lead to building an outrageous custom-designed 18 foot shoe. Definitely a record-breaking feat for a WT Summer course! All art materials will be supplied by WT. Simply bring your talent, ideas, and a desire to learn and create with you to the studio each day!

The Bard and Broadway Performing Arts Workshop If you like to act, sing, or do both simultaneously, there’s something special in this camp experience for you! Some of the greatest musicals in history got their start way back in the Renaissance, with the works of William Shakespeare. During our creative and dramatic week together, we will perform scenes from select musicals AND the Shakespearian plays on which they are based. Did you know that Romeo and Juliet inspired West Side Story, and that Taming of the Shrew birthed Kiss Me, Kate? These are just a few examples of the art that we will explore and perform together! Campers will have the opportunity to learn, grow, and perform as we sing the notes of the Great White Way and speak the prose of The Bard. You can test the waters of iambic pentameter if you’ve been curious about Shakespeare, or you can find your voice singing in a scene from a musical. Either way, you’ll get a fresh perspective on the shows, and discover new talents in yourself. We will present our work in the Friday Finale, with an audience of family and friends.

How does typography tell a story? Students will research the history of hand painted text-based murals, study contemporary artists and mural painters who utilize text, and explore local signage, text murals, and graffiti via a field trip. Fundamentals such as color, line, texture, shape, and layout will all be considered. Girls eS.T.E.A.M. Workshop This special Girls eS.T.E.A.M. summer program at WT seeks to empower young women through hands-on inquiry-based projects and activities linked to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Each day will be filled with lessons, labs, challenges, site visits, special guests, activities, games, and more linked to inspiring and engaging young women! A good portion of our week will focus on the science of beautistry. This unit takes the traditional physical science standards and flips them. Many tween and teen girls are consumed with the way they look but do they actually know what they are wearing? The scientific beautistry unit consists of 5 focus areas including soaps and cosmetic products. Our research activities will explore the many hidden chemicals that we use on our body daily to help keep us clean and to make us feel attractive. We will work to identify the many ingredients that have been used to make cosmetic products (by using the packaging from well-known popular products from our drug and grocery stores!) and we will then make our own products using natural ingredients. We will also explore a unit titled, So Fresh and So Clean. Nothing says chemical reaction better than making your very own soap. The girls will get a chance to make their very own soap as we explore saponification. We will work individually and in teams to expand our inquiry and knowledge but also to empower and strengthen our bodies and minds. Our combined focus on esteem and eS.T.E.A.M. during our week together is designed to help build confidence and relationships, to expand interest in science and math, and to create unforgettable memories. City as our Canvas: EN PLEIN AIR PAINTER’S STUDIO In this relaxing, creative course, we will venture to unique and beautiful Pittsburgh locations that will inspire the creation of beautiful landscape paintings in this workshop. En plein air is a French term meaning outdoors/in the open air. Painting en plein air is essentially about observing and painting subjects from life outdoors. This practice increased in popularity in the nineteenth century after the invention of tubes for oil paint. We will visit a different destination every day and learn to compose landscapes using the oil technique. Just like the nineteenth century Impressionists, we will concentrate on capturing the subtle impressions of the qualities of light and atmosphere. Each day we will focus on tools and technique while also learning about composition, drawing, and editing. Course artists will also learn about color mixing, brushwork, and paint quality. We will share our work and perspectives with fellow artists. WT will provide the expert instruction, transportation, canvases, brushes, and paints…you will provide the talent, interpretation, and vision to create your own unique works of art to display proudly in your home!

This seminar, just for rising seniors, will provide time for you to reflect and draft your college essays. You will have the opportunity to explore different essay topics through self-reflection, work on drafts of your essays, and receive detailed feedback before you begin submitting your college applications. In addition, the seminar will provide rising seniors the opportunity to review different short answer questions asked by colleges and discuss different ways to answer them. Take advantage of this special time to jumpstart to your college application process at WT!
