from the parents association:

We welcome you to get involved. Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year! I am excited to serve as this year’s Parents Association President. As WT parents, we are automatically members of the PA – you determine your amount of participation or your level of membership. When I joined the WT community in 2007, I did not know many families and was unaware of the various ways I could be involved. Today, our family’s closest friendships are within the WT community and my level of involvement as a volunteer has grown each year. As my participation has grown, so has my appreciation and gratitude for all we have at WT. There are so many interesting ways for parents to become involved, and so many fascinating and fun people with whom to spend time when you do. You can volunteer as a room parent or parent ambassador, chair an event (it’s a Benefit year!), educate fellow parents about the importance of the WT Fund, and more. In the next few weeks, you can expect to receive a follow-up email from me and a personal outreach from a veteran parent volunteer or member of the WT community. In the meantime, please take a moment to consider the way that is most meaningful to you and your family. Ask yourself, “how will I activate my PA membership?” Then visit the Parents Association tab in the Parent Portal (see page 13) to learn about the many possibilities. I welcome the opportunity to discuss WT experiences and explore new ideas with you. Please do not hesitate to email me at herronk@winchesterthurston.org. I look forward to seeing you soon! Kate Underwood-Herron Parent of Eion, Class of 2028, and Eliot, Class of 2021

As the new President-Elect, I am honored to serve in such a supportive, dynamic environment. The Winchester Thurston Parents Association strives to benefit our children through collaboration and commitment to the community. Whether you are volunteering at Pumpkin Fair as a second grade parent, donating a pie to help make Middle or Upper School Pi Day an enjoyable celebration of mathematics, or getting more involved and serving on a committee for an event, your contributions are all vital to the enrichment of our students. Thank you, in advance, and I look forward to both meeting and working with you. Allison Grodin Parent of Harrison, Class of 2018, Garrett, Class of 2021, Sage, Class of 2022, Brady, Class of 2026, and Jillian, Class of 2028 2016-2017 PARENTS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT-ELECT

We are all members of the WT Parents Association. When we activate that membership by being involved, we foster meaningful relationships with fellow WT parents, teachers, and administrators. These connections have helped create a bountiful community for our daughter, Ava, and our family to thrive and grow together. Parent engagement at WT truly helps provide a better understanding and strong foundation for our children’s academic and social well-being. Giving: WT’s spirit of philanthropy All across the country, independent schools look to the generosity of parents, alumni, faculty, and others for support. In fact, many people are surprised to find that tuition is only a part of a school’s revenue, which is why fundraisers, annual drives, and solicitations are critical to operations.

On average, tuition only covers 80% of education What is the WT Fund? The WT Fund is how Winchester Thurston funds the gap between what tuition covers and the actual cost of a rigorous, engaging WT education for our students. The WT Fund provides opportunities for all our teachers to improve their practice, awaken their creativity, and challenge our students. Parents, like you, are the heart of our philanthropic activities. In 20152016, more than 360 families raised nearly $178,000 for bountiful experiences such as: n helping students improve the pond habitat at the North Hills Campus n character-building City as Our Campussm expeditions n financial aid for a promising young mind who otherwise

couldn’t attend WT

n athletic equipment for our record-setting sports teams n innovative Upper School English electives that bring literature to life n research equipment for Middle School STEM elective, RAPID Lab

According to the National Association of Independent Schools:

70% of parents make a gift to their child’s school Gifts average $905 per family across the country The WT Fund is the essential fundraising priority for our school, having an immediate impact on students and faculty. Your tax-deductible gift to the WT Fund today is hard at work in our community tomorrow.

PARENT PERSPECTIVE:

“As parents, we are the greatest role models our children have, whether through providing new experiences, volunteering at Applefest, or encouraging perseverance through a challenging assignment. We are fortunate to have the active, engaged, and selfless commitments of WT teachers to guide our children alongside us. My family values this collaboration and believes in the power of the WT Fund because it directly supports the WT experience” Manny Cahouet-Rotondi

Parent of Alexander and Emily, Class of 2022 2015-2016 WT Fund Parent Chair and WT Trustee

What to expect: Starting in the fall, parents volunteers and members of the Advancement team will reach out via mail, email, and phone. We may ask for a meeting to get to know you better, to discuss giving, and to understand the areas of your child’s education that are most important to you. Philanthropy is personal. This is why we want you to be able to support WT in a way that is meaningful to you. Perhaps your child benefited immensely from our math and science curriculum - or felt a special bond with a classsmate in the Middle School musical. Maybe you’ve seen the passion of a favorite teacher bringing the classroom to life. You can designate a gift to an area of the school that matters most to your family. Our goal is always for 100% of parents to support the WT Fund, and every gift counts, no matter how large or small. Your gifts of time, talent, and treasure are an investment in our community, and our students’ future success. To learn more about philanthropy or to become a WT Fund parent volunteer, call Michelle Wion Chitty, WT Parent of Octavia, Class of 2024, and Associate Director of Advancement, at 412-578-3748.

PARENT PERSPECTIVE:

“Educating kids is WT’s priority, and the school goes out of its way to respond to and nurture each child’s potential, whether developmental, intellectual, or social. The energy and engagement of the North Hills Campus teachers is beyond anything we’ve ever seen, and we’ve looked at a lot of schools. We greatly appreciate being part of an open, respectful community where all voices are heard, and all children are valued as individuals.” Rob Frazzini and Anne Zacharias

parents of Lia, Class of 2024, and Niko, Class of 2026

“There are more and more worthwhile options for our charitable giving every year. When our daughter started in Middle School, we did not immediately understand why we should put WT on that list. But after our son enrolled too, it became clear that supporting the school beyond tuition is the right thing to do for many reasons. As an educator myself, I love, respect, and appreciate WT’s approach to educating our kids.” Ward Allebach and Lisa Steagall parents of Daisy A’17 and Jacob, Class of 2020

“Watching our daughter grow up and develop into a thoughtful, creative human being at WT is of course the main reason we feel compelled to give. The school has created an atmosphere of learning in which our daughter has thrived. This is not only because of the strong academic curriculum but also because of the nurturing environment.” Clifford Chen and Robin Ziegler parents of Lucy Chen, Class of 2017

Every gift to the WT Fund goes to work immediately to support students and faculty. To learn more about philanthropy at WT, visit www.winchesterthurston.org/giving.
