AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMPLETED

Work starts on new University building

Scout Group may also get new home By KEVIN GOVER News Editor A special ceremony has been carried out to open new affordable housing development at Hillier Way in Winchester, with 13 homes and apartments completed. The scheme marks a progression for the City Council – which has announced that it has doubled its target to build 600 new homes by 2020. Planning permission was granted in February 2016 and contractors H H Drew started construction on the site in September that year.

All of the homes at Hillier Way will be owned and managed by the Council, and will be leased at an affordable rent. The development includes three three-bedroom homes, three twobedroom homes, three two-bedroom duplex houses and four one-bedroom apartments.a As part of the development a previously inaccessible site, adjacent to Hillier Way, has been transformed into a natural recreational area for the benefit of local residents and discussions are underway to make it the new home of the 6th Winchester Scout Group.

It’s Not Worth The Risk

Family talk of heartbreak after relatives killed by lorry driver using a phone HAMPSHIRE Police have just ended a week of activity specifically targeting drivers using hand-held mobile phones, with the aim of drawing attention to the risks posed by being distracted while in control of a vehicle. The enforcement follows the deaths of Ion Calin and his friend and work colleague, Marian Olteanu - who were

killed instantly when a lorry ploughed into their stationary car on the M271 in December 2015. The lorry driver was distracted, using his mobile phone. Their families’ lives have been devastated by the impact of the accident and they have shared their story to help raise awareness of the lethal consequence of driving whilst using a mobile phone.

You can see them talk in special videos on our website. Ion’s wife Veronica is begging drivers to think: “There is nothing that’s an emergency - there is nothing that important that you have to answer a phone while driving. “I have waited for so long to come to terms with what happened, but it doesn’t get any easier over time.”

Road Safety Sergeant, Rob Heard worries that some drivers still fail to heed the warnings: “We are still seeing too many people deciding to take that risk to use their mobile phone whilst driving, whether looking at a text, making and receiving calls or even surfing the internet.
