5p Levy On Plastic Bags Having Real Effect By Kevin Gover, Editor kevin.gover@winchestertoday.co.uk The Southern Co-operative has told Winchester Today that local good causes will benefit to the tune of £172,000 from the first six months of their carrier bag levy fund, after a staggering drop in use. Jessica Hughes is Communications and Community Engagement Manager: “We have been really pleased with the 71% reduction of single-use carrier bags we have seen in our stores. However, the 5p levy has helped us to raise over £172,000 towards

our Love Your Neighbourhood programme to help support our local communities. 100% of the proceeds will be donated because we believe that these funds belong back in the communities that helped to raise them. The Southern Co-operative has launched regional partnerships with the disability charity, Scope and a group of local environment and nature charities, the Wildlife Trusts, donating £40,000 to each as part of a new community

scheme to address local concerns across southern England. Since the levy was introduced on 5th October 2015, The Southern Co-operative has seen over a 70% reduction of singleuse carrier bags given out by its 195 food stores. Between 5th October 2015 and 5th April 2016, The Southern Co-operative has cut the number of singleuse carrier bags given to its customers by more than 10 million. The partnership with Scope

will support the ‘more inclusive neighbourhood’ theme. There are currently over 2,600,000 disabled people of working age living across the south of England. Scope works with disabled people and their families by providing practical, everyday support and campaigns that change lives. The Southern Cooperative will be supporting Scope’s End the Awkward campaign, which aims to tackle the awkwardness people feel about disability.

Letter From The Editor I am absolutely delighted to be able to announce that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is our new charity partner. 214 Air Ambulance missions already flown this year - and, let’s face it, none of us know if we’re going to be the next passenger. It means that their vital work will now be shown, free of charge, in this newspaper until December 2019. The generosity of everyone in this country means that a service like this can continue. Should we take a service like this for granted? Shouldn’t an Air Ambulance be a fully funded part of the NHS? Well, it isn’t. Let’s be honest - it currently costs the charity approximately £230,000 each month to keep the Air Ambulance flying and they couldn’t do it without the constant support they receive from your donations. We will do everything we can over the next three years to bring you news of the work they do.

Boost for BHF Event brings some ‘Ooh La La’ for local charity A successful collaboration between two local Winchester fundraising groups, 3Women and The Mad Hatters Present, has resulted in a £9,500 donation to The British Heart Foundation. The glamorous Parisian-inspired fundraising ball ‘A Night At The Moulin Rouge’ was held at the Winchester Guildhall and was attended by over 170 guests. Neil Jarrett is fundraising manager at the BHF: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this event such a fantastic success. All the money raised from this night will help us fund scientists to look for new ways to fight heart disease. It’s only because of the generous

support of the public that we’re able make new life-saving breakthroughs.” Co-founder of 3Women Michelle Beck said, “Our joint alliance has allowed us to combine our skills and talents to produce an amazing evening of glitz and glamour that has culminated in a generous donation to the BHF”. Catherine Turness is from The Mad Hatters Present: “Heart disease touches the lives of so many local people. In Hampshire over 1,100 die from the condition each year. We’re thrilled to be in a position to support the BHF’s research which is doing so much to save and transform lives.

Brewery celebrates two years in the business

Winchester based brewer Red Cat threw open its doors on Saturday 7 May and welcomed a huge crowd to its second annual Open Day in celebration of the business’s second birthday. Established in the spring of 2014 by Iain MacIntosh and Andy Mansell, Red Cat’s singular aim is to create imaginative, stunning craft beer, and with the mercury rising to the mid 20s on a stunning sunny Saturday in Winchester, the Open Day was the perfect opportunity to showcase their growing range of ales. With their ‘we don’t do boring’ tag-line, the four members of Red Cat Brewing staged a packed and vibrant event including their

full range of 14 beers available at the bar. In between guided tours of the brewery and talks on just how Red Cat go about brewing their beers – which are gaining huge popularity across the south of England - around 500 visitors enjoyed almost 1200 pints of ale ranging from the ever popular Scratch and Prowler to Nine Tails and Mr M’s Porter, alongside

their ‘Untamed’ range of specials – not forgetting the launch of the eagerly-awaited bottled 9.1% ABV Vintage Stout - IMPERIAL 15. To top the day off the team had a surprise visit from South Hants CAMRA and were presented with a certificate for their Feral Vienna IPA 6.2% ABV which was Runner Up as Beer of the Festival at the recent Winchester Real Ale and Cider Festival.

As part of their pioneering approach in this rapidly growing industry, Red Cat are keen to seek out Hampshire collaborations, and to this end they’ve been working with young, Hampshirebased artist Kirsten Houser who has created the artwork for their popular ‘Untamed’ range of specials. Red Coats of SWT Customer Ambassadors a Beacon of Help

If you have been to the railway station recently, you may have seen Caroline and Spencer in their glorious red coats - they’re ambassadors for Micheldever and Winchester railway stations respectively: “If we didn’t have the red coats, we wouldn’t exactly stand out,” Spencer told us. “We have to stand out and be approachable. It’s better than being stuck behind a window, It allows us to get more involved. We try to bridge the gap between ticket office and information, really. It allows us to impact someone’s journey more.” Caroline is very pleased to

have the opportunity. We like to give the best possible journey experience from start to finish, and we have had a very positive reaction from members of the public. Even in Micheldever I’m outside, still meeting people and greeting them. If they can easily see you, they can ask for help. Meet our new charity partner As you probably know, for the last three years Winchester Today has given extensive coverage to the work of Naomi House as a charity partner. Over those three years, we have brought you many stories, including frontpage news. We know that Naomi House does a fantastic job, and we hope that as a newspaper we have given them the coverage they deserve. It’s time to move on now that the three years is over, and Winchester Today is now proud to announce the newspaper’s new charity partner as the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. This pledge from us will last until December 2019. We never know when any of us will need the

services of the Air Ambulance. Let’s help keep it in the air. Theatres Trust grant for urgent repairs at city’s Theatre Royal Theatres Trust has announced that it is giving Theatre Royal Winchester a grant to help with urgent repairs to the building. The trust has awarded £5,000 from its Theatres Protection Fund’s Small Grants Scheme towards fabric and structural repairs to Theatre Royal’s weather damaged façade on the Tower Street side. Mark Courtice is Chief Executive of Theatre Royal Winchester: “Theatre Trust’s grant for Theatre

Royal is very welcome. It is great to feel we have such a vitally important organisation in our corner as we fight to keep our lovely building alive and bustling with activity.” Theatre Royal Winchester is a Grade II listed building. The Theatres Trust describes it as “an excellent example of a small cinévariety theatre which has survived in remarkably complete condition.”

Gardening May 2016 With The Veg Man. One of the most important months in the vegetable grower’s year, much of the earlier work is beginning to show results, May gives the opportunity to sow the seeds of less hardy vegetables and to continue work on the soil. Hoeing is so important: new weed growth gets under way as the soil warms up. If you planted these items earlier in the year, broad beans should be showing well, garlic, leeks and onion sets showing strongly and asparagus provides a welcome new taste until cutting ceases in June, but younger plants should not be harvested for so long. Rhubarb should be showing well and for those who like

to freeze some, early growth always tastes better than later pickings. Overwintering crops like leeks, purple sprouting broccoli, late cauliflowers and savoys, often just make it into May but as they finish cropping, the ground needs to be cleared. I do not advocate digging chalky soil at this time of the year and all that is needed is to break up the top few inches and work on the soil to produce a good tilth for seed sowing. Add some fertiliser and sow parsnips and continue planting carrots and spring onions. I always compost any green waste, but do not add in the hard stalks, as these take a long time to break down.

By now most gardeners will have erected their runner bean supports and similar ones can be used for any other climbing beans. I prefer to grow beans like bulotti using the taller varieties that need support. The shorter ones can be damaged by rain and drag on the soil when they are due to be harvested in autumn. Brussel sprouts need a long growing season and need to be planted out in firm ground. Mine and the early cauliflowers are showing well under cover and will be planted out very soon. Continue sowing salad seeds little and often to provide continuity. I usually plant the following lot as soon as the

earlier sowing are showing well. Take action against slugs and snails and protect brassicas from pigeons. Soft fruit needs watching over and strawberries in particular need netting, it also helps to spread straw round the plants to prevent the berries becoming muddies in the rain. I net gooseberries and other soft fruit in dry weather as pigeons can damage them. Tomatoes, chillies, aubergines and pepper plants need planting out in the greenhouse but delay until

Farm film season begins! Another popular venture which has farmer Chris Horn from Droxford hoping for some good weather shortly is the ‘Film on a Farm’ enterprise which is now into its 2nd year. 10 screenings are already planned and more to squeeze in around Harvest. A NEW Extended layout means more: four stages of live music, a packed festival village, plus a huge choice of local and international food stalls. The Ringwood Fine Ale bar, plus more cocktail and cider bars will be quenching thirsts.

FAMILY ARENA

FREE family entertainment all day, including silent disco, bungee trampolining, climbing wall, inflatable assault course, Mayflower Musical Youth Theatre, an African music workshop, craft stalls, a magic show, art workshops, street theatre, a memory pod and poolball.

LINE UP

Over 25 bands will play throughout the day from 10.00-23.55 and sensational headline act DUB PISTOLS are confirmed for the top slot; so look forward to a high energy reggae-breaks-jungle mash-up party to close the festival. TRAVEL

It’s so easy to get to the festival! There are FREE shuttle buses now running between Alton and Winchester train stations from late morning until midnight so everyone can relax, travel safely and have a good time.

CAMPING

For those who want to make a weekend of it, there’s now plenty of camping in Arlebury Park (tents only) on both Friday and Saturday nights, PLUS this year there is a dedicated motorhomes site only 600m from the festival entrance (limited capacity – first come first served). Camping is FREE on Friday and only £5 per person on Saturday. Alresford Music Festival is a real community event in the heart of our town. It only happens due to generous support from residents, volunteers and sponsors and we are very grateful to; First Option Software, Thomas Miller Creative, Axians, Alresford Salads, Belgarum, CleverTouch, Cold Control, Families Worldwide, Mint Signs and SQA consulting. The festival is not-for-profit and money raised is given to local community charities and other good causes. Bear Grylls Honours Top Hampshire Scouts

International adventurer Chief Scout, Bear Grylls, has honoured thirty-two Queen Scouts from Hampshire at Windsor Castle. The Queen’s Scout Award is the highest goal in Scouting and is gained for outstanding personal achievement. The young people, aged between 16 and 25, must contour a range of challenges, from making an impact in their community, to completing an adventurous expedition, undertaking a fiveday residential project in an unfamiliar environment and to learning a new skill or developing an existing talent. Lizzie Harvey, aged 24, from Hampshire was one of over 650 new Queen’s Scouts receiving her award: “Gaining my Queen Scout Award has been not only a great personal achievement, but also a personal adventure. It was a challenge to fit my professional life around my award, but Scouting was flexible in allowing me to get the balance right. I had the opportunity to make new friends when I trekked Dartmoor for my expedition, the chance to travel abroad and make a difference teaching youth empowerment in North Africa, and had so much fun volunteering with my local Scouts that I have continued to do so.” Laura Betterbridge, aged 18, is another recipient: “Completing the Queen’s Scout Award was a fun and life changing experience.

Like most people my age, I was juggling the challenge with my academic commitments. Learning to keep focused and organised showed me that goals are achievable. The biggest highlight for me was waterfall jumping in Mexico, along with the lifelong international Scouting friendships that I have made. I would encourage anyone who likes a challenge to give Scouting a go.” Alix Nichols, is aged 17, and also from Hampshire: “ During my award achievements, I was able to boost my confidence and try out yacht sailing in a new group of friends. Travelling to Uganda allowed me to experience a new culture whilst helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves. The challenge has inspired me to volunteer aboard again. I am in the process of volunteering of my local Scout group, and will soon be abseiling down the spinnaker tower in Portsmouth to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.” Chief Scout, Bear Grylls, says it’s a huge personal achievement for them: “All these young people have lived the adventure of a lifetime to achieve their Queen’s Scout Awards, and I admire that spirit so much. They are huge inspirations to over half a million Scouts in the UK and I am so pleased that Scouting has honoured them. They are truly amazing.”

The Macmillan PPP returns! The Macmillan Pedal, Paddle, Pace (PPP) will take place again this year on 17th July. Sponsored this year by Forresters IP, this fun charity event is a unique form of triathlon, with twist of 2k kayak replacing the swim. It is an event for everyone to enjoy, a challenge that’s been taken on by absolute beginners and won by ex-Olympians. Run by a committee of enthusiastic Winchester based friends led by Rob Williams, the event has now raised over £130,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and expect another 500 competitors this year to bring in another £30k for this amazing cause. College storms to victory in National Cup

Peter Symonds College achieved excellent results at the AoC National Cup and Plate finals on with the Men’s Hockey and Women’s Hockey

teams both securing wins. The Men’s Hockey team beat Esher 7 – 2 with goals from Will Jones, Harry Trott, Dave Roche, Jack Murray and Matt Cole. The Women’s Hockey team won their game 3 - 1 against Greenhead with Ellie Streather, Freyja Haigh, Megan Struthers hitting the scoreboard. The Men’s Rugby, Men’s Volleyball and Women’s Volleyball teams also made it through to the Cup and Plate finals but were defeated in their matches. This year saw the highest number of Symonds’ teams reach the AoC National Cup and Plate finals and was also the first time the Men’s Rugby and Men’s Volleyball teams at Peter Symonds qualified for the event.
