PAR FOR THE COURSE By Peter Gordon

Wednesday 29th November - Saturday 2nd December 2023

‘To all frustrated golfers, golf widows and golf haters… this play is for you!’ Peter Gordon

From the Director Having directed and acted in many productions over many years, I found myself persuaded to take on the direction of this hilarious comedy by Peter Gordon. I directed Third Week in August in 2015 and acted in Murdered to Death three years previously, both by the same author, so his work is not unfamiliar to me. His characters are always well drawn and somewhat larger than life. Par for the Course, as the title suggests, is about golf, or more specifically a golf club and some of its members and their various eccentricities. Some similarities might be drawn with

one or two of the cast from Third Week in August for those of you who saw that production in the outdoors at the local pub, the Flower Pots. It has been great fun to direct with the cast of six each having interesting parts to play and the production team giving great support. I hope you have an enjoyable evening. Pauline Cornter CHERITON PLAYERS’ COSTUME WARDROBE HIRE The Players now have an extensive supply of theatrical costumes/props for hire to other Dramatic Societies and individuals. For further information, see our advertisement elsewhere in this programme.

From our Chair As many of the golfers amongst tonight’s audience will testify, Captain’s Day at any golf course can be fraught with tension and filled with large personalities. Love or loathe golf, you are in for a real treat as the large personalities and tensions of Seven Lakes Golf Club play out on our little stage, here in Cheriton. The village hall has been the scene of golfing mayhem since the beginning of September and thanks must go to all involved for their support, not just those on stage tonight and to Pauline Cornter for directing and keeping control, but to all of those people behind

From the Author the scenes, coordinated by our Producer, Jan Conway. Front of House is ably managed by Jenny Cridland, so many thanks Jenny and team. The Players really appreciate all your support and are always on the lookout for new members. You don’t have to be a budding (or experienced) actor, we need backstage and front of house volunteers too. If being a part of our next production appeals to you do speak to one of us this evening or email thecheritonplayers@gmail.com Now, sit back and enjoy Peter Gordon’s brilliantly written and highly entertaining play, Par For The Course. Marilyn Weston

COSTUME HIRE

As you know, Cheriton Players hold an extensive wardrobe of costumes, many of them period pieces including Victorian ladies’ dresses, formal evening wear (top hat, tails etc), 30s/40s/50s dresses, coats, tops and accessories, some matching sets and a few military uniforms. All costumes have been thoroughly cleaned, boxed or hung on rails (in the dry) in our new costume store nearby. We have a comprehensive catalogue of what is available and our rates are very reasonable – if you need any costumes for a production or for a fancy dress party, give Jan Conway a ring on 07771 910989 or Pauline Cornter on 07568 375985. Alternatively email us at thecheritonplayers. org.uk with your enquiry.

Having personally dabbled fairly ineptly at golf, I realised that a play set at a golf club offered all kind of opportunities for a comedy. Comedy, or rather slapstick, was certainly a central aspect of most of my games …. or as one of the characters in the play remarks ‘...a series of tragedies punctuated with the odd miracle’. Most of all though, I wanted the substance of the play to be based very firmly around a set of quirky and interesting characters rather than a set of golf clubs. Something that people would understand and enjoy whether they loved, hated or

even understood anything at all about the game. So rest assured, there’s far more drama off the course than on it! As a reviewer once kindly remarked, ‘Peter Gordon writes about life. Sometimes it is bizarre and funny, sometimes it is sad, but it is always entertaining’. In writing Par for the Course I was hoping to achieve all of those aims. Having seen Cheriton Players perform another of my plays, Third Week in August, I know that Par for the Course is in very safe hands. I do hope that you enjoy the show. Peter Gordon

Biographies Pauline Cornter (Director) Pauline has the honour of being the longest serving member of Cheriton Players. As well as directing such classics as ‘Allo ‘Allo, Alice and An Inspector Calls, Pauline has played a huge number of leading roles at Cheriton including Eliza in My Fair Lady and (her favourite character of all) – Mole in Wind in the Willows. Other appearances include The Importance of Being Earnest, Salad Days, Lock up Your Daughters, Confusions, Oliver!, Jungle Fantasy, Murder in Cheriton!, several Old Tyme Music Halls and Habeus Corpus, for which she was nominated for a Curtain Call award for her portrayal of Mrs Swabb. She was Audrey Evans in Ten Times Table, Madame Arcati in Blithe Spirit and the super sleuth Miss Maple in Murdered to Death. She appeared in multiple roles in A Bolt from the Blue and both Cheriton Variety Shows. She directed award-winning Third Week in August, also by Peter Gordon, and has been heavily involved in our refurbished costume department over the past few productions.

Mike Cornter (Barry West) Mike is the second longest standing member of Cheriton Players, after his wife Pauline. He was persuaded to join in 1967 by Pauline’s father, Les Sumner who, together with his wife Peggy, were founder members. Mike has appeared in many plays and shows over the past 56 years. He has enjoyed playing character roles such as Squeezum in Lock Up Your Daughters in 1990, René in ‘Allo ‘Allo and Donald Trumpet (a parody of guess who) in Diamonds Are For Trevor in 2019. His favourite role has been the bigoted patriarch Arthur Birling in An Inspector Calls. Mike was last seen on the Cheriton stage playing the part of Henry Miller in Calamity Jane. When not treading the boards, Mikes loves reading

and writing poetry; he also enjoys sport (these days mainly watching rather than playing!). Mike and Pauline have been married for 54 years and Mike says their proudest moment was performing alongside Pauline’s mum Peggy and their two sons, Danny and Julian – three generations of one family.

David Cradduck (Simon Weaver) David has been with Cheriton Players for 50 years. Title/lead roles include Charley’s Aunt, Wind in the Willows, Worzel Gummidge, Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime (1994), Pride and Prejudice, Outside Edge, The Importance of Being Earnest, An Inspector Calls, Oh Clarence! and A Month of Sundays. Other productions include Oliver!, The Real Inspector Hound/Black Comedy, Jungle Fantasy, The Noble Spaniard, Out of Order, A Christmas Carol, Table Manners, Murder in Cheriton!, ’Allo ’Allo, The Ghost Train, Ten Times Table, Alice, Murdered to Death, Season’s Greetings, A Bolt from the Blue, Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime (2015), Cash on Delivery and The Game’s Afoot. He won the 2015 Curtain Call Award for ‘Best Actor in a Comedy’ for Third Week in August and appeared in both Cheriton Variety Shows, (Another) Murder in Cheriton!, Diamonds Are For Trevor and Never Say Trevor Again! His most recent role was in The Massive Tragedy of Madame Bovary! Credits with other theatre companies include Noises Off, Under Milk Wood, The Mikado, Relative Values, Tom Jones, Shadowlands, Far from the Madding Crowd, The 39 Steps and Murdered To Death. David now spends his time as an occasional film/TV actor.

Glynn Williams (Nick Armitage) Glynn has appeared in a variety of Cheriton plays over the years, including Freddie in My Fair Lady, Tony in She Stoops to Conquer, George Pigden in Out of Order, the March Hare in the Players’ 50th

Anniversary production Alice (his son, Alex was the Dormouse). He appeared in Cash on Delivery in 2016 and is a frequent performer with West Meon Theatre where he has appeared in many productions including Cider with Rosie, Neville’s Island, A Child’s Christmas in Wales, Daisy Pulls it Off, Merry Wives of Windsor, in which son Alex and daughter Livvy were also in the cast, and most recently he played one of his favourite characters, Badger, in their summer production of Toad. He has also appeared in various productions with Lion & Unicorn Players. When he is not acting, Glynn enjoys writing, producing and performing music.

Bernadette Lomas (Tiffany Jennings) Bernadette says she is pleased to be on stage with the Cheriton Players for a second time, having previously performed in Murder Weapon in 2021. She also performs regularly with West Meon Theatre (most recently in Toad in July, joined by her youngest son, Callan) and at The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre with Bench Theatre where she recently acted and directed in Duets in September. She also sings with Imagine That Productions in Haslemere and is a part-time student at Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance, working towards a BA (Hons) in Theatre Studies. Away from the theatre Bernadette enjoys spending time with her maledominated family, exploring forest areas around Hampshire with her dogs and photographing birds and wildlife.

Jane Richards (Fran Jeffries) A break from working in a technical capacity in London’s West End saw Jane taking on the role of Dick Whittington’s Cat with a travelling panto company, touring the clubs of the Northeast.

Imagine her dismay when, after paying great attention to feline facial expressions during rehearsals, she was asked to don a full-faced rubber mask! Later, whilst working at Guildford College, she became involved in staff/student collaborations where her roles included Dorigen in Chaucer’s Franklin’s Tale and Cathos in Moliere’s Precious Provincials. Whilst in Guildford, Jane also joined Merrow Dramatic Society and played Ouiser Boudreaux in Steel Magnolias and Jan in Bedroom Farce. She joined Cheriton Players after a very long hiatus from treading the boards and recently appeared as Mrs Fortune in Never Say Trevor Again!

Helena Gomm (Laura Weaver) Helena has regularly appeared on stage for West Meon Theatre and for Cheriton Players since moving to Hampshire in 1997. In 2013, she made her first foray into directing with Neville’s Island for West Meon Theatre. This was followed by Night of January 16th (2015) and The 39 Steps (2019). In 2015 at Cheriton’s outdoor production she played Mary, the long-suffering wife of nerdy Neville, in Third Week in August (a relationship not dissimilar to that of Laura and Simon). The first production that Helena directed for Cheriton Players was Cash on Delivery (the one with the belligerent, radio-controlled washing machine). Since then, she has directed The Game’s Afoot (2017), the Bond spoof Diamonds Are For Trevor (2019), which she also adapted from an original script by Simon Tytherleigh, and she recently repeated the whole procedure with the sequel, Never Say Trevor Again! Helena has recently retired from a long career in writing and editing for the teaching profession.
