Not only have we experienced an Indian Summer with some days in early September reaching 27 Celsius, but our morale and health are both benefiting too.

Anyone who knows Mike Carson (Pictured right) will know that he loves many things: his family, his church, his friends - and Chunky KitKats straight from the fridge. There are also two other great passions in his life: leadership and football.

Welcome Letter from the editor Like many of you, I have to use the train between Winchester and London on a regular basis. I like South West Trains because when you compare them with the other companies and facilities on offer, they really are not so bad for comfort.

Like you though, I have to pay shed loads of money and wonder why.

Like you, I wonder why an anytime day return from Barnes to Winchester is £27.20, but £51 in the other direction.

Just a day after the news came that we should expect at least a 4.1% increase in rail fares after the latest inflation figures - and the front cover of the Times about how your fare in Winchester allegedly subsidises other parts of the Network in the north - we received a press release from South West Trains.

They are planning a 15% increase in capacity and procurement of 135 extra carriages by 2019. However, we understand they will all be for suburban routes in and out of Waterloo. Not one is coming in our direction.

I put the question to them about when any investment is going to come our way.

Not investment about raising bridges so that freight trains can get through. Not about footbridges (although we welcome that).

Investment which means not having to wonder whether you can get on the 0748 from Winchester to Waterloo at all, let alone get a seat. Why coming back is just as much of a nightmare sometimes.

Why there seems to be no sense of planning for football specials, for example when Charlton were away at Bournemouth yet the train was only 5 coaches.

Sadly, I have to report that so far there has been silence. I will let you know what they say, if and when they say it! *** So, hands up everyone who has enjoyed the summer? That’s probably around 40,000 hands waving at me right now. There are certainly a lot of smiles, as you can see from our main story.

Since we recorded that, we found out from the charity Plantlife that we’re in for a bumper crop of blackberries too. Not only does that make us humans smile, but it’s also good news for wildlife like dormice. The warm dry summer has helped stimulate the brambles and produce plenty of fruits.

River Park Future

Sports clubs, stakeholders and individuals with an interest in the future of River Park Leisure Centre in Winchester are being invited to a meeting to hear how the City Council is considering the project and to have a chance to input into the process.

The meeting will be at the Guildhall in Winchester on Thursday 26 September at 7.30pm and will consider the key decision faced by Winchester City Council on whether to replace the leisure centre, where and with what facilities.

Councillors and officers will present the work they have done so far and outline the issues, financial considerations and options under consideration.

Wild for Wildlife in Winchester The River Itchen flowing through Abbey Gardens in Winchester is being made better for wildlife and people.

Winchester City Council and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust are working to turn straight, man-made stretches of river that run through the city into wildliferich, meandering waterways.

The more natural environment is attractive to look at and is ideal for wildlife including water-voles, salmon, otters, kingfishers and grey wagtails.

Work has already been carried out by specialist river restoration contractors, Aquascience.

Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP Steve Brine has set a challenge to CALA Homes and the Highways Agency in a recent parliamentary debate about cycling.

Speaking in the 'Get Britain Cycling' debate - held on Monday 2 Sept - Steve backed a report which endorses a target of 10 per cent of all journeys being by bike by 2025 and 25 per cent by 2050.

Speaking in the House of Commons the MP highlighted the need for leadership at local level if cycling numbers are to continue rising and stressed the need for new developments to 'build in' cycling at the planning stage.

season, soft fruit season, and now a fantastic pumpkin season to come. It’s been a great year for suppliers as well.

It’s only ten o’clock in the morning and there’s a clear blue sky in Kings Worthy. The sun’s beating down again, it’s lovely and warm - and this on one of the last days in August. Gemma Morgan is the manager at The Good Life on Springvale Road and loves the fact that people are smiling: “I think the customer morale and staff morale has made a huge difference compared to last season. It’s just nice to be able to sell the kind of food that we’re supposed to be selling at this kind of year.”

Just having the sunshine makes a whole world of difference according to Gemma: “For strawberries, for example, you need to have the sunshine to get the great taste and the smell. It’s all brought out by the weather and we’ve been shifting 600 punnets over a weekend.”

Gemma says she’s delighted that the conditions on the farm that supplies the shop again has made a huge difference, this time for the farmers’ livelihood:: “It’s been a really difficult four years for people like Farmer Jane. She’s had a hard time and has been able to make back some money. It’s pretty sad British farmers have been really struggling, and I’m delighted that she’s had a great year for deliveries and the pick-yourown side of the business.”

Those of us who were struggling last year (even this newspaper) will always remember the relentless rain. Gemma agrees that 2012 was a disaster: “Last year was dreadful; we struggled with asparagus, strawberries and raspberries. Even pumpkins were a complete washout.

But now Gemma is just one with a huge smile on her face: “This year the crop of pumpkins couldn’t be better - we’ve also had a fantastic asparagus

PREVIEW: Women’s season drama Theatre Royal Winchester is presenting its women’s season drama this autumn with a series of plays written by and performed by women. They are all being presented at Winchester Discovery Centre.

The series begins with awardwinning Mess (2 Oct), a play written by major talent Caroline Horton about anorexia and recovery. The Times describes the play confronting the issue of bsession as being staged sensitively and engagingly to ‘breathtaking effect’. The play was developed with experts from King’s College Institute of Psychiatry and Beat, the UK’s leading charity supporting people with eating disorders. Based on the writer’s own experiences of anorexia, it portrays one woman’s journey to recovery and her

rejection of an internal world of addiction and control for the outside world which is messy, chaotic and rich.

Described as ‘funny and provoking’, Chastity Belt (6 Nov) asks the impossible question of whether women of a certain age should resign themselves to chastity. The play is performed by Peta Lily, an actor renowned for her one-woman shows.

This production is part of her experimentation with issues that have edge and relevance to women, and examines the relationship between sexuality and autonomy for women.

Perception and Delivery continued from page 1 Why anyone would want to be a manager in the first place is beyond me though. Not knowing if your job is safe because of some fickle chairman who thinks he knows best must surely be the worst scenario in the world, and I put this to Mike:“Everyone from the boardroom to the post room thinks they can be a manager. They all think they can do a better job.

“You know as well as I do that we’ve all done it at home as well, we’ve all screamed at the telly.

But it’s much more difficult in the dugout.”

Inside the book, there are the thoughts of some 30 managers, split into five areas of where they need to succeed: those five areas are the scale of the task, creating a winning environment, delivering results, personal leadership and the

great challenges.

Mike says those managers he spoke to were very forthcoming.

The book has been produced with help from the League Managers’ Association, and Mike says that Association Chairman Howard Wilkinson would say: ‘this manager will be strong on such-and-such… that one on another...’

But importantly, Mike feels that the managers were all keen to speak because they weren’t going through the humdrum of everyday questions; the endless and frankly tedious task of fending off the never-ending Gareth Bale or Wayne Rooney situations: “They were all very eager, warm and very committed. They had angles which I didn’t know they would have. They do stuff that they don’t even know they’re doing.

“After one interview, the person concerned told me that it had been a real eye-opener for them. You see, that also shows that they have a touch of humility about them.”

So, there’s the chairmen, the fans and the referees to fend off… how about the press? Apart from his “Why do you look at me?” interview meltdown, the book shows how people like Arsène Wenger manage to have a productive relationship with the media. He says he accepts their opinions, as long as they keep it in professional terms. What he will not accept is personal situations.

Mike says that some kind of managers succeed simply because

of the kind of people who used to surround them. Mike told me that all of the top-flight managers had their own role model: "For Mourinho it was Bobby Robson.

For Kevin Keegan, look previously to Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.

"A lot of others, like Keegan, are players going on to be managers. Mick McCarthy playing for Millwall for example - on the team sheet one day, manager the next."

But Mike also thinks there's much more than that: "You have to have empathy and steel in the art of one-on-one. Sir Alex is incredibly strong on empathy.

Then you have to separate your friendship from your professional life."

There's a moment in the book where Martin Jol talks about the art of oneon-one, and that there will always be a problem if the player stops communicating.

He says that sometimes he doesn't like a player because 'I know he doesn't like me but I still invite him into my office.'

And the 'Special One'? Mike laughs: "He has the ability to succeed on different levels. Level 1 -he's managed it in all of the great major leagues. Level 2 - he can

manage outrageous talent."Simple.

Mark agrees the book is in superb condition: “It’s written in a nice hand and these are the kind of things you need if you want to go further back.

We are fortunate that we have a good relationship with the Church of England and they pass the books like this on to us. Some things have gone wrong over the years and there are a couple of things missing.

But we do have an excellent conservation department if something has gone wrong over the years.”

I ask Mark what he thinks people will get out of the sessions: “We don’t insist that everyone wants to find out everything about everyone.

But it actually gets addictive sometimes, and leads from one thing to another. We’d just like to be able to help people with their research.”

Since our last issue

Shortly after our last issue came news that a successful second round application from the Heritage Lottery Fund had resulted in a £10.5m boost for Winchester Cathedral.

The national grant was awarded to enable essential repairs to the Cathedral fabric, conserve its medieval windows, and will also enable the development of three new major exhibitions.

The Cathedral’s Receiver General, Canon Annabelle Boyes, spoke of how their confidence has come true: “Last year I was able to say that I was delighted that we were in a position where we could realistically look forward to the day when we could fulfil some long held aspirations for repairs, conservation and the significant enhancement of what we offer our visitors. I am delighted to be able to say that work can commence, thanks to this significant contribution from the HLF.”

A property development in Hatherley Road which featured in our newspaper in January hit the headlines again when an earlymorning fire forced the evacuation of ten neighbouring houses.

As you can see, the heat was so intense that it melted the streetlight.

Some 34 fire crew attended the scene from Winchester, Basingstoke, Redbridge, St Mary's and Eastleigh.

Winchester & Chandler’s Ford MP Steve Brine told Winchester Today that he welcomes the decision: “This is such good news. I have recently been into the Cathedral to see the plans and the vision the team have so I couldn’t be more pleased they can now be fully realised.

“This building is so much part of Winchester but also of our nation so it’s quite fitting the national lottery can help it thrive and reach out to the next generation in this way.”

It is expected that work will commence on the urgent repairs in the early Autumn and the conservation and exhibition projects will follow shortly.

Reasons To Be Cheerful - Part 1 we had a fantastic view. We were told that an experience like that is quite rare and only happens a few times a year. It was actually more difficult coming back down; we were slipping all the way.”

Paul said he found that one more difficult on the way up: “ I did it quite quickly but I didn’t know it was possible that so much sweat was in my body. I have never sweated as much, ever, ever as on that climb. I do windsurfing as a hobby and I was wetter getting up Ben Nevis than windsurfing. I was drenched!”

Tom also found it much more difficult than he envisaged: “I found it much more difficult getting down than I thought it would. I was imagining that it was going to be three climbs and three strolls down.

It became a much bigger thing; all at once it became six challenges rather than three challenges. At the bottom of Ben Nevis, I really thought about how I was going to do this.”

You may remember in our last issue we met a Team With a Dream - to climb all Three Peaks in the UK in 24 hours... and all for the love of one woman dear to them. Hannah Baker was just 33 when she died after a fall down some stairs.

You may remember at the time that we kind of questioned the fitness of the team (!) - so would you believe that on the night before scaling Ben Nevis they all went

to the pub for the night? Yes, we thought you might believe it.

So, we’re back at the ‘Mucky Duck’ in Winchester for an update on how it went, with Hannah’s husband Eddie, Paul Hare and Tom Parsons.

Eddie says the 12-hour drive to Scotland wasn’t without an adventure before their adventure

had even begun, when one of the walkers forgot his boots. That’s despite having boasted about his wonderful cache of equipment with pictures - on Facebook.

Then came the pub. Burgers, black pudding, beer followed by a huge Scottish breakfast in the morning: “Three hours to the top of Ben Nevis, and we were thankful that we had made it to the top. It had been cloudy all the way, but then the clouds parted at the top and

Paul agrees that he hadn’t done enough training going DOWN hills: “I did a lot of training - a lot of running and a lot of walking.

On one day I did three walks, so I knew about it. But not once did I do enough downhill walking. I had a blister at the bottom of Ben Nevis, but it was because of going downhill.”

All the team agreed that ‘Parky’ was the hero of the day. When the team got back down to the bottom

of Ben Nevis they found a huge round of bacon sandwiches waiting for them!

The Cheriton Players are to make a return to the 'classics' with one of JB Priestley's best-known plays, if not his finest.

The Players are already busy rehearsing for the play which will be performed between 4th and 7th December 2013 at Cheriton Village Hall. Curtain up is at 7.30pm.

'An Inspector Calls' is known to many scholars, as it's one of the prescribed texts for the English Literature GCSE examination.

Rachel Jackson, coordinator of IBM’s ‘Women in technology’ initiative thinks that the latter is a real factor, but it’s not the whole story by any means. Careers advice is another, for sure, and education is where this has to start.

Which brings us rather neatly back to careers advice. It is painfully obvious that, although technology is a remarkably buoyant industry, schools and careers advisers are not proactively encouraging enough people into it and this at a time when employment is very high on schools’ agendas – whether male or female, but especially female.

Women consume technology – on Twitter, Facebook and in mobile phone purchases, women outplay men. So why are they not creating it?

Computer Weekly and Mortimer Spinks have teamed up two years running to conduct a survey into this subject and have come up with some very surprising facts. Of the 1,318 participants, of whom 45% were women and 55% men – all from varying age groups and salaries – 59% of them believe that starting a career in tech is far less attractive for women than men. No surprises there, then.

One of the reasons I want to get hold of them is to take part in a breakfast event we are planning to hold here, at our offices, in early October as part of our series of #FirstThing breakfast seminars. We see this as an opportunity to bring together some important players in the field – educationalists from primary, secondary, further and higher education, representatives from some big players in the industry (like IBM), smaller tech employers (like First Option), women who inspire other women in careers and self-motivation, and the media.

Organisations like Lady Geek, headed by Belinda Parmar are booked up for weeks to come to speak at conferences across the globe.

Watching a nine minute video of her speaking at a recent TEDx conference in Greece I was bowled over by the straightforward way she puts across the facts: that the number of women joining, and working in, the world of IT is very low incredibly only 17% of the IT industry in the UK is female.

So, Mortimer Spinks’ survey results would lead you to believe that the message is not getting out there, but again the results are surprising: 46% of men and an intriguingly large 30% of women don’t actively think that there should be more women in IT, that it’s a non-issue. And whilst media attention is growing around the problem and there are plenty of people who wish there was more, it seems that only about half the participants felt that there should be more attention given to it in mainstream media.

The format is likely to be as a symposium – a round table discussion – and from the output we hope to use to produce a white paper on the subject, supported by video and media coverage. Despite the findings of Mortimer Spinks’ survey, I believe that more ‘getting the message out there’ can do nothing but good for the cause. Indeed, they obviously think so too because they intend to send the results of their survey to one hundred schools advisers, along with an invitation to go and talk to students about the findings.

So the inference is that “perhaps it’s become important that we no longer write about how there are aren’t enough women in tech, but instead write and talk about how brilliant it is to be working in tech.”

After all, those already in the industry love it – so there’s no problem with a disgruntled female workforce; it seems that the problem is getting

When I first started looking at the topical, but relatively simple, subject of Girls in IT (or rather the lack of them), I never realised just what a can of worms I was opening.

I was invited by Dan Gardner, a computer science teacher at the Perins School next door to attend a lunchtime session with a group of Year 8s, over a couple of mountains of chips by way of a bribe, and wasn’t sure what the outcome would be (if any).

Young teenagers do not usually respond well to being kept inside at breaktime so I was fascinated to see that, apart from a few who were clearly there for the chips, there was a genuine interest in what was going on.

And, apart from demonstrating

the lighter side of computing with a programmed robotic car, that was to try and sway the opinions of these young women towards choosing GCSE Computer Science as one of their options.

I had to do this by dispelling a few myths, asking a few questions about their perception of the industry and IT, and to try to understand just why the computer industry cannot attract the fairer sex in any number compared with their male counterparts.

It's not like they haven't got the basics. GCSE results here in the county towards the end of August proved that English and mathematics performance in Hampshire has been strong this year. 67% and 72% respectively achieving A* to C grades. This compares strongly with this year’s national figures of 64% and 58%.

Back in February, we heard that computer science is going to become part of the English Baccalaureate one of the measures used in school league tables in England. However, 24% of Hampshire students achieved the English Baccalaureate. Only 16% take it nationally. So, that means that less than a quarter of students

Even more worrying is that the trend is downwards, so much so that by 2043 the percentage of women in IT will be less than 1%.

So why do the statistics tell such a bleak story? Is it that the IT industry, as Belinda Parmar’s research into girls’ attitudes would suggest, is full of ‘pizza-guzzling male nerds’? Is careers advice in this sector poor or are girls’ brains just wired differently terrace houses also to be built by FE Chase & Sons on a former garage site and sewage pumping station owned by the City Council at Station Close in Itchen Abbas. We have all known for some time that the cost and affordability of housing in Winchester District is a serious problem. There is a genuine shortage of affordable housing in Winchester, with demand for affordable housing massively outstripping supply and the number of people on the waiting list increasing monthly.

Work has just started on site on the first new council homes to be built in Winchester in over 30 years.

FE Chase & Sons Ltd are building three 3-bedroom terrace houses on a former garage site owned by

Winchester City Council at Bourne Close in Otterbourne.

This will be followed by the second batch of new council homes, which also started in August: two 3-bedroom and three 2-bedroom

I have tried in vain to get hold of someone from the National Careers Service to give me their view on it but despite their very active Twitter feed about how successful they’ve been, and an invitation from them for me to tell them all about my project to date I have only had automated responses to my emails.

Not only does this affect families wishing to move to a suitable home, but also young people wanting to set up home for the first time and older people keen to downsize. This has a knockon effect for the area’s economic prosperity and the quality of life of residents.

The City Council has told Winchester Today that providing affordable housing can help tackle these problems and delivering new homes is a priority.

Team With A Dream “Where DO you get those things from?” This is probably the question that Wendy Smith gets asked the most. Along with the odd “Wow!” or two in the same sentence. She’s the founder of Kathmandu and Diddly-Do, which features beautiful hand-made goods from India, Morocco and Nepal.

On the day we meet, Wendy is a happy bunny.

She has just spent a weekend that “turned into a bit of a blur” with 38,000 people to satisfy at the Boomtown Fair - and glorious weather to boot. She shared a stall with a guy called Angus who was selling hats. Between them - with Wendy selling things like yoga pants elephant hangings they appear to have had a good combination. Her sunglasses went down a storm in the bright sunshine, evidently.

Wendy is also on the move, and for a good reason. You may have seen her before at her ‘popup’ shop in Stockbridge Road, but in just five months Wendy and her team have simply outgrown the premises.

By the time you read this, Wendy will be in the her shop in the Brooks Centre.“The shop in Stockbridge Road started off with just

myself back in March, and I just wanted to open a small pop-up shop to see how it went basically. But I was also doing a lot of other things including the market, and was working almost 24 hours a day.

“I wanted to keep on the shop so I asked a couple of people to come on board. My good friend Mandie Lavinia came in with her bespoke fuse glass… then we invited Claire DonovanHeld who runs ‘Lost and Found Vintage’ to come in. We even sub-let a space to others (handcrafted jewellery and handmade baby shoes) too - so it’s really quirky. It’s got a really magical feel to it. I’ve had so many people coming through the door telling me their life stories - I’ve had fortune tellers come in… it’s got a really nice feel about it, but unfortunately we’ve expanded really fast in five months.

Everything we sell individually seems to work as a whole.”

So is she sad to move? “Yes, this was my baby. I could be sentimental and stay here, but I need to be a businesswoman. Financially, if I need to make my business and everybody else’s business succeed, I need to expand. I could be

It doesn’t take long to spot something beautiful, as our picture of the lantern from Morocco shows. Everything’s beautiful; you want to buy everything. That’s where it all started for Wendy - travelling and bringing things back. Her friends then kept sking: “Where do you get those things from?”

Wendy deals personally with individual families in the countries we’ve mentioned, sourcing the goods.

Wendy says that’s a problem in itself: “When there are religious holidays, work in India and Nepal grinds to a halt. It can be quite stressful, but I don’t want to go to a big company. But the families don’t get the work ethic about how we want deliveries and how we need them.”

So how does she get round it?: “I just keep emailing and ringing! I keep telling them that I need to have it. I know I have missed out by not receiving my goods because it’s too late.

It’s certainly been a bit of a learning curve that I need to make sure that my orders are in because they’re all handmade. The orders need to be in months ahead.”

Wendy also hopes that the city will realise the worth of pop-up shops like hers: “I was actually asked by the City Council to make a video showing how they work for financial reasons. Popup shops are not there just for Christmas. They can be a showcase for local

people and talent without having to think of the financial worries; a lot of people who make their own goods don’t have the confidence to know their items are good enough to sell.

“This way, with the way we work, we could have people come into our shop, we could have them there for a month and say ‘see how it goes’... you know, we do it on a commission basis. If they don’t sell anything, they haven’t lost anything.

“I’d been around estate agents too trying to find pop-up shops and no-one seemed to be exactly forthcoming with finding a solution.

It just doesn’t seem to be making sense; I don’t understand why people wouldn’t rather have some money coming in and their shops occupied for 2 months rather than being empty.

It’s a big step financially for people. I would not have been able to do everything unless I had this opportunity in Stockbridge Road.”

Is the team with a dream fulfilling the dream?

“For me, it was never the financial thing, it was about how much I could achieve and for other people to see the wonders of other countries.

Having worked in the travel industry, my main aim is to travel. I can still do the travel, source new countries, source new goods. I have big ideas. My brain never stops. I want to go global.

I want to be on The Apprentice. Everything!”

Escape- To Mykonos

Landing in Mykonos feels as if you are entering a painting. There is something unreal about the stunning colour of the blue sky and sea as well as the gleaming white of all the buildings. I had to pinch myself to believe I was there as it was almost too perfect. It certainly lived up to first impressions.

Mykonos was the location for the mythical battle between the Greek God Zeus and the Titans. It was also named after Mykons who was the grandson of Apollo and the nymph named Rio. As if that legendary history was not grand enough, it was also the place where Hercules slew the Giants.

These days you will not find many Greek gods or even Titans but you can be sure of finding a bronzed Adonis or two, usually on one of the island’s many beaches.

It is well known as the setting of the British film Shirley Valentine and we were greeted at the airport by our very own Shirley Valentine. Frenchborn Hélène runs Hotel Spanelis with her Greek husband who she met on a flight to Paris 30 years ago. They now run this lovely little gem of a hotel and really make you feel part of their family.

Not only will Hélène pick you up from the airport but she will drop you back at the end of your holiday. Now that is service with a smile. She will also share some wonderful anecdotes about the island’s history. Ask her the

Hotel Spanelis is an extremely popular budget hotel, and has amazing views of the Mediterranean Sea - and you just cannot beat breakfast on the terrace.

It is only a 15 minute stroll into town. If walking is not your thing then you can always hire a car or a scooter but you will be relieved you stayed here as it is better value than many places in the centre of town and you do not get the noise of the late night bars or clubs. (Note: we booked in March and went in June when the rooms cost an amazing £30 per night. Not a single room was left when we put this article together in August. Prices for September were listed as £57 for a single up to £75 for a double.)

The main town is very walkable and you will only really need transport if you visit other parts of the island.

Despite the increase in tourism, it is good to see that its traditional white Cycladic architectural style and character has remained firmly intact, thanks to the island’s strict building regulations.

Here you will find chains including Chanel, Burberry and Louis Vitton but the majority of stores sell traditional Greek products. My favourites were the art galleries where you can buy paintings at an excellent price.

Mykonos has become a haven for visiting artists and I ended up buying eight art works for friends and family.

Two excellent ones in particular are the Minima Gallery and Orama Art Gallery.

Make sure you eat here at sunset as it will be a truly unforgettable experience.

If you want to combine painting of Mykonos with buying souvenirs then my two favourite places are Archetype and Galera. Here you will find paintings of the familiar blue sea and white architecture to remind you of your holiday. You will also find many other souvenirs such as pretty hand painted plates and bowls but be aware that they are often made on other islands such as Crete.

After dinner there is one place you must go and that is the Montparnasse Piano Bar. It serves some of the best cocktails on Mykonos but best of all it features some top cabaret with performers coming from as far afield as the United States. It really does have a fantastic atmosphere. The bar is popular with visiting celebrities and Petula Clark is a regular. She is known to do impromptu performances when visiting. I found it the perfect way to unwind after a day of shopping, eating and drinking. Other popular bars include Caprice which is on the waterfront and Thalami Bar if you want Greek music.

Check out the windmills of Mykonos Town as they have become an icon of the island since the days that it produced wheat and bread in large quantities. It is also one of the most popular places to watch the sunset.

The Boni Windmill is open to the public. If you wish to gain a further sense of local history then visit the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos and Folklore Museum for instance.

You are very likely to come across one of the island’s best known characters on your visit to the main town. His name is Petros the Pelican and is considered the mascot of Mykonos. The original Petros was found wounded by a local fisherman in the 1950s following a storm and he nursed it back to health. It sadly died in 1986 and the island went into mourning. His death was felt so deeply by the islanders that a new pelican called Petros was brought to the island. He now also has two pelican friends so you may well bump into them too. They are very tame and it is not unusual to see them being stroked by enthusiastic tourists.

In the town you will find many wonderful restaurants. I was on the island for five days and found the food to be top notch in all of them.

You can enjoy sumptuous dishes on the island such as loukanika which is a pork sausage flavoured with orange peel, fennel seed, and various other dried herbs and seeds. A particular favourite of mine is Moussaka which is an aubergine or potato-based dish.

Try and eat in restaurants facing the harbour or the sea in areas such as Little Venice. Yes, you may pay a slightly higher price but you are also paying for a first class view. Katerina’s Bar and Restaurant and Mourayio are two of the island’s best restaurants.

Of course, few people come to Mykonos to simply shop and eat.

It has arguably the most beautiful beaches that I have seen in Europe.

The word serene does not do them justice. Two of the most popular are

Paranga and Super Paradise and the latter certainly lives up to its name.

You will be captivated by the blue of the Mediterranean.

Paranga can be reached using the bus though buses are not always regular. It is probably best to hire a car to visit both beaches or you can use the Platis Yialos Boat Service.

It is a great way to see some of the southern beaches. The beaches are apparently at their best in May and September as there are less tourists and it is not so hot.

get quite busy but that is unsurprising as they are simply gorgeous. If you go to Paranga Beach I highly recommend you enjoy lunch at Nikolas Taverna. It serves absolutely sumptuous cuisine.

Try the stuffed vine leaves followed by the traditional onion pie. Yum yum yum!

The main town is very easy to get around on foot but if you want to go further afield then I recommend hiring a car or scooter. Make the most of your transport and get out of the main town and visit the nearby village of Ano Mera and see the beautiful monastery of Panagia Tourliani. The village square has a good variety of restaurants. I enjoyed the Giorgos and Marina Fisherman Taverna. The food is delicious and the friendly owner will tell you all about the unusually placed eucalyptus tree growing through its roof.

There is so much to do on the island of Mykonos but if you get itchy feet and want to explore further afield I would suggest visiting the uninhabited nearby island of Delos.

It is a UNESCO world heritage area known ifor its archaeological sites.

Boats go to this island daily except Mondays. It is also possible to visit other islands such as Tinos, Syros, Paros, Naxos and Santorini. You can

also take the ferry to Athens or Crete or elsewhere if you want to see more of this magnificent country.

Mykonos is known as a party island but is also known for its serenity.

It really does have something for everyone. If you want an idyllic holiday where you can mix culture and a bit of partying with relaxation then Mykonos is the place for you. You will be able to live like a Greek God or Goddess on a very affordable budget.

You will be part of an exquisite living painting and will end your trip with vividly colourful memories.

Sport 'Rejuvenated' Continued from Front page Supporters and players of Winchester City have enjoyed an almost perfect summer, staying at or near the top of the Wessex League Premier Division for most of that time.

It's a far cry from last season when the club was forced to hand back the keys of the ground and the city council had to step in.

At the time of going to press, and as our pictures show, the players had enjoyed another sunny

Saturday in the FA Cup, beating Southern League outfit Swindon Supermarine at home 3-0. By all accounts, Marine supporters had admitted through their own Tweets that their side were simply awful on the day.

But that shouldn't take away the fact that everyone knows Swindon Supermarine's pedigree. Winchester City are a side rejuvenated - and hungry for promotion, with just one defeat in the league, at the time of going to press, at home to Whitchurch United.

There's good news for talented athletes in Hampshire with the Talented Athlete Scheme Given Olympic Legacy Boost From this month, promising sportsmen and women across the county are being invited to apply for the Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme (HTAS) which has seen its funds doubled thanks to Hampshire County Council’s Olympic Legacy Programme.

The programme, which was launched in July with the help of Hampshire-based Olympic gold medal cyclist Dani King, has given HTAS £92,000 per year for the next three years as an investment in Hampshire’s talented athletes. The money helps support local athletes with training, sports science, travel and physiotherapy as well as monetary grants.

HTAS gives money to over 200 athletes a year and some of Hampshire's most promising

athletes have received support in previous years, including Dani King from Hamble, and Olympic bronze medallist hockey star Alex Danson who went to school in Odiham.

The Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme, which is administered

by Hampshire County Council in partnership with Sport Hampshire & IOW, helps support rising and established sports stars reach world class podiums.

Since it started in 2008, almost 550 of Hampshire’s most promising sportsmen and women have received funding, with many more benefitting from free access to training facilities.

National and international level athletes can receive a range of benefits, including a monetary

grant, free access to leisure centres, fast track physiotherapy, a free bus pass from local bus companies, as well as sports science support from Southampton Solent University.

Regional and county level performers can also benefit from fast track physiotherapy services.

At a time when costs associated with training and competition are on the increase, the scheme is seen by many current and previous recipients as a much-needed injection of support.

Alex Danson says he’s priviliged to be the Ambassador for the Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme: “I am privileged to be the ambassador for the Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme. The support from the scheme enables athletes, like me, to achieve their goals and compete at a world class level. It is really exciting that Hampshire County Council are investing in the future of sporting talent in Hampshire and it makes

me proud to have been a member of the scheme.’’

Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Recreation, Councillor Keith Chapman, said: “Hampshire has a strong sporting heritage, with many exceptional sportsmen and women living in the county. The Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme goes some way to providing much needed support to these committed, talented and determined sportsmen and women. We look forward to receiving applications and supporting our local athletes achieve their sporting ambitions.”

Applications are free and straightforward. The deadline for applications is Friday 11 October 2013.
