MARATHON AND A HALF FOR CHIEF EXECUTIVE by KEVIN GOVER News Editor The Chief Executive of Play to the Crowd, Der yck Newland, will be running not one, but two races this autumn to raise vital funds for the arts and education charity which he leads. Play to the Crowd runs Theatre Royal Winchester, Hat Fair and Playmakers – the money raised will help the charity to continue to provide brilliant live performance and participation to delight and unite its local community. Deryck told Winchester Today about the struggles he’s endured: “Way back in May 2007 I gave up smoking. I decided to train for a marathon instead, having never really run before. I googled ‘marathons close to me’ and found The Clarendon Marathon in the first week of October. I had no idea what I was letting myself in for! I suffered. I hit the wall. But I made it round in 4 hours and 28 minutes. “Since then I have run quite a few marathons including London, Bournemouth and, most recently the Goring Gap Marathon. None have hurt me so much as that first one. “I have always promised myself that I would have another go at it and so here I am: 14 years older and a stone heavier and obviously no wiser! “There is unfinished business and I am determined, despite advancing years, to achieve a better time for it than 4hr 28. Also, I now work in Winchester, one end of The Clarendon Marathon. Deryck explained to us why he wanted to raise funds for Play to the Crowd: “We have all been through the most challenging time with the

pandemic and arts charities that rely on venues like the one I work for have been particularly hard hit. So I am raising money, by having another bash at The Clarendon Marathon, for the charity I lead: Play to the Crowd, which delivers Theatre Royal Winchester, Hat Fair and Playmakers for our local communities. “Just to make it tougher I stupidly (and without checking the calendar) have also put myself down

for the Winchester Half Marathon just two weeks before!” The Winchester Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 19 September and The Clarendon Marathon on Sunday 3 October. To sponsor Deryck please visit https://www.crowdfunder. co.u k/a-marat hon-and-a-ha lf-by-our-chiefexecutive
